"Karima has all the assets needed to accurately portray the world's favourite female action hero" said Matt Gorman, Brand Controller for Tomb Raider.

A London shop assistant and model is to become the new face of action hero Lara Croft after a worldwide search.

Karima Adebibe, 20, from Bethnal Green, east London, will travel the globe representing the archaeologist for the launch of the next video game.

Ms Adebibe, who worked in Top Shop, will now embark on a gruelling schedule including an SAS survival course.

To portray the 11th generation Countess she will also take courses in etiquette, elocution and archaeology.

The self-confessed tomboy said: "This is an incredible opportunity for me and one which I plan to grasp with both hands.

"It's a huge challenge to follow in the footsteps of people like Nell McAndrew and Angelina Jolie, but life is all about challenges and this is perhaps the biggest one for a model and actress..."

I don't think I understand. they're gonna model lara croft after her now? why does she need to take all those fucking classes then? she's not gonna be in another movie is she?

So when geeks pepper her with archaeology questions at video-game conventions, she'll be able to answer properly.

kingfish has gene rayburn's mic (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 22:33 (nineteen years ago)

I should be the new Lara Croft. I bet I know fucking EVERYTHING about at least the first one and a half Tomb Raider games.

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think I understand. they're gonna model lara croft after her now? why does she need to take all those fucking classes then? she's not gonna be in another movie is she?

I'd hoped it was because they were actually going to make her run around ancient ruins shooting at bears.

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

So, she's the new one in the next movie then? Presumably Jolie had other commitments? Or she's just gonna roam the earth fighting crime and archeologizing?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 16 February 2006 00:59 (nineteen years ago)

I am revelling in the shock and awe that they picked a strumpet to be Lara Croft.

Dan (Odd Expectations) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 February 2006 02:19 (nineteen years ago)

I would've thought she would just be taking on the roles of other former "lara" strumpets who basically swan about doing promo for the game. they've always done this! what was the name of that... the britishes girl, she wasn't in any movie but she was "lara croft" at movie premieres and things.

wu-tang clan analogue (haitch), Thursday, 16 February 2006 06:55 (nineteen years ago)

Rhona Mitra was Lara Croft for a while, I remember. Wasn't Nell McAndrew (in a wig) as well?

Just for once can't we have a fake Lara who's genuinely posh? :(

Abu Hamster (noodle vague), Thursday, 16 February 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

One of them, possibly Nell McAndrew, got fired for posing nude and "soiling Lara Croft's squeaky clean image".

The squeaky clean image of trespassing and shooting endagered species to steal stuff, that is.

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 16 February 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

i'm sure a google image search would show exactly how squeaky clean Lara's image is. and how soiled she can get. (unofficially, obv)

the kit! (g-kit), Thursday, 16 February 2006 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

Jeez. Less "hot" women and more raiding tombs and machine-gunning dinosaurs, pleez.

A kinder, gentler, de-bustified Lara Croft.

I said MORE machine-gunning dinosaurs, dammit.

This sounds like Lara Does Time Team.

one month passes...
Is the new game worth getting? I was a big fan of Soul Reaver and was wondering if Crystal Dynamics had made Tomb Raider into something I'd want to play?

Greig (treefell), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 09:00 (nineteen years ago)

Having seen her on the Saturday morning kids show with Willy Holloughby this weekend, I can confirm that although she may be a strumpet she is a HOTT strumpet.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 10:39 (nineteen years ago)

xpost - It's interesting, definitely actually a new game instead of the incremental improvements that the last 12 have brought us. Proper analog control, more shooting and a much less fiddly exploring mechanism - you basically just have to throw yourself in the general direction of the next rockface and you'll make it (there's a nice thing where if you nearly make it, you might end up hanging on by one hand, so you have to hit a button to right yourself), so you can in theory have a much more fluid gameplay process. Less running into walls and going 'umph!' = a good thing.

Also a lovely bit of physics in one of the puzzles in the demo.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 11:11 (nineteen years ago)

I liked the running into walls noise! Next you'll be telling me she doesn't do her schoolmarm "No!" when I pick the wrong key.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

i love all the tomb raiders but i hate hate hate using the analog controller. i never made it through angel of darkness because i couldnt stand it. i was hoping they'd go back to directional buttons.

All the Tomb Raider games I played were awful -- are we talking about the same thing?

and the landscapes are really pretty too. even the old old ones.

sunny successor (katharine), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

I played the demo last night. Very nice graphics, had to run it at 800x600 to get a decent framerate though (only onboard video on my current pc, so not unexpected).
Control is pretty smooth, don't like the shooting but expect I'd get used to it. Nice puzzles. I think I might pick up a copy for the xbox.

Greig (treefell), Thursday, 13 April 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

http://blog.wired.com/games/images/2008/08/12/carroll2.jpg

Alison Carroll, a 23-year-old receptionist from the London borough of Croydon, has been tapped as the new live-action face (and body) of Tomb Raider heroine Lara Croft.

Unlike the pretty faces who have inhabited Lara's shoes in the past, Carroll has the physical chops to match the virtual plunderess: The official press release touts her "12 years' experience as a professional display gymnast."

"This is a fantastic opportunity and I am really looking forward to embracing Lara's world," Carroll said. "I still can't believe they chose me to take on the role of Lara -- and I can't wait to get stuck in. This is my dream job."
