Shadow is different from both this and the Prince of Persia makeover in that Shadow still fits the visual aesthetic of the Sonic universe; so what if he has a gun, it's a cartoony gun that looks like it shoots minty bubbles.

Sure, Shadow is rendered in roughly the same style as "hedgehogs" generally are in the Sonic games, but more important is the shift from fun/cartoony to the clearly more marketable dark/extreme/badass dude, which is a pretty tired move at this point. I mean if you come up with such a character from scratch and place him/her in an environment where that makes sense, fine; taking established characters/worlds and attempting to overhaul them to fit this mold is weak.
