What was the first ever PC (or console) game you bought?

...and why did you choose it?

Not including playing games of other peoples before that (like say, me playing my brother's Sim City Classic and Lemmings on his C64), but the first time you went out with a wallet and a purpose to buy game(s), what was it?

When I got my first PC (486DX with 4mb RAM, aw), I also proudly purchased SimCity 2000 and Day of the Tentacle, because I had read reviews of both in a PC mag and liked how fun and accessible they seemed.

I was addicted to both for ages - also DOOM which came out shortly afterward (I even paid for the shareware to get all the levels!).

I had to cheat loads with DOTT though - I'm rubbish at adventure games as Minish Cap is currently showing me (gah! The palace of droplets ice puzzle FARK but thats another story hem).

What were youse's first proud purchases then?

I think the first one I actually *bought* (Rather than getting as a present or whatever) was Leisure Suit Larry 6, which was the best of the lot in my opinion anyway!

I think i've been "acquiring" games since the age of 9, thru friends of my dad.

there was Ultima V in 1989, and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy around that time, too.

it might have been Alien Breen, it's difficult to remember. This was my realization that consoles did this type of thing a lot better, PC's were ok for flight sims.

I can't remember what my first PC game that I actually *bought* was--but I remember becoming really addicted to the shareware version of Wolfenstein 3D. This was on a 386SX 33. Didn't even have a maths coprocessor. Hardcore.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 11:03 (twenty years ago)

mine had a turbo button

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 11:29 (twenty years ago)

So did mine! Later, when I got a more powerful computer, I had to switch off the turbo button to play Wing Commander, because there was no clock limiter in the game!

I had 'Bullseye' the game on the ZX81. I win at sadness.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 12:07 (twenty years ago)

Have you ever wondered why it used to take 20 minutes to load a 16K game?

Abu Hamster (noodle vague), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 12:15 (twenty years ago)

To build suspense (see Horror Games thread)

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 12:19 (twenty years ago)

JetPac, TransAm and Chuckie Egg. Maybe Manic Miner too. think they were all 99p as part of one of those game of the month subscription type deals.

although thinking about it, i must've had some software for the ZX81 i had before this but maybe that was all typed in. oh, i had 3d Defender? was that zx81? i think it was.

First PC games I remember:

--some Disney game with Mickey and Goofy going on a space adventure in space

--Dig Dug

--Montezuma's Revenge (incredibly difficult platform game)

--some ninja game where you had to fight your way up through rooms in a ninja temple.

These were all 5.25" floppy disk games, of course.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:25 (twenty years ago)

I think mine might have been Yar's Revenge, which I think I bought because the box was cool.

First console game we got with our own cash was probably either Commando or that one Karate Fighter one(where you proceed thru levels of the dojo) for the Atari 2600.

My brother & sister & I pooled our cash to get our own NES in Jan '89.

I remember Montezuma's Revenge having awesome sounds, like when you slide down a pole.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

my first one was for the dick smith wizard (trayce might remember that) and it was called 'car chase' which was basically a car being chased by other cars in a pacman like grid. we wanted an atari but my mom bought us the wizard because it came with a 'basic' cartridge and a manual that allowed you to spend four hours typing in code to watch, what was supposed to be, a goldfish swim back and forth in a bowl.

the first game i ever bought myself was X-Games ProBoarder (Jan, 1999) for the PSONE, which I still think is the best snowboarding game ever made. kicked Coolboarders ass then and kicks Shawn Palmer's Pro Boarder today. halfpipe, superpipe, downhill, freestyle, etc. all gold. i was playing it up until a year ago when i sold everything to move. i wish i still had it.

The first game I ever owned was the Smurfs game for Colecovision, followed by that one with the flying dragon that haunts my memories to this day. First one I bought with my own money: Space Quest I! At a computer store in this weird mall in Toronto called the Village on the Grange.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, I remember MR. If you beat it once, you finished right where you began, only you could go thru it all again, this time with the lights off.

http://www.classicgaming.com/rotw/montezuma.gif PANAMA JOE. That's what they call him 'round these parts: though no one knows his real name or where he comes from. But one thing's for sure. PANAMA JOE's a daredevil from the word "go!" No risk's too great if the reward's large enough. Winning. That's what's most important to him. And more times than not, that's exactly what he does. Because he's tough, clever - resourceful. And sometimes downright pig-headed! Though occasionally (ah-hum), he's been known to get in over his head. Luckily, he's got a knack for getting himself out of hot water as quickly as he gets into it! Let's hope MONTEZUMA'S REVENGE is one of those times.

The sequel, which IGN rated as "meh."

I think the first console game I 'bought' was smb that came with the NES. First PC game was either the Black Cauldron or Space Quest. I remember being way pissed with space quest because there were some times that called for quick reaction and I couldnt type that fast.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 22:03 (twenty years ago)

First PC game: KING'S QUEST III (or IV)
