meat-puppet "stroke victim" expressionless eye characters? yupawful AWFUL dialogue? more so than ever beforelinear progression? you wanted something more fule?old-skool get through the level and a big boss? natchpuzzles that a kid playing wind waker would laught at? oof you got me
WHAT IS must-have about this game? NOTHING. balls to it's collect cash by smashing everything in site. balls to it's nonsense "trader". balls to it's loading screens.
it's the simplest kiddy structure game wrapped in adolescent nonsense and soaked in blood.
Eternal Darkness was way cleverer than this.
like i say, i'm enjoying playing it now i have it, but i's not a game i'd recommend or anything

The thing that pissed me off the most was the trader not selling any ammo when as you can walk up to him much of the time you can clearly see he's got a fucking huge pile of it sitting right next to him!

--The control/UI. I think it's really intuitive and fun, and it's sooo much better than the old RE games. It also feels fresher than first person shooter #2341342366.
--Yeah, it's totally linear, but I'm happy to go from awesome setpiece to awesome setpiece. It rarely felt like I was shooting through random cookie-cutter grunts, most scenes have some kind of twist.

also as RE4 pal antexit points out it has kinda the perfect learning curve
― s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 27 February 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)
It's still a bit overrated, true. But it's a nice, fun-enough game. It's very very pretty. And mercenearies mode is great.

i'm finding some of the setpieces a bit tedious, though the truck while girl drives was some fun. there's a profound artificiality in a lot of them which is consonant with the placement of the trader, the gun shoot, and money lying around, but which jars with the game's appearance and action in general. plus i think i screwed up the big showdown at the end of disk 1 by just rocket launchering the guy. (actually perhaps not, isn't there a tradition of making the mid way boss impressive and anticipated, but actually quite easy to finish off?)
now i'm facing the marine guy and it's a bit repetitious. i think i have to knock him off the tower.
i do quite like some of the special/context sensitive moves they drop in from time to time. cute.
i guess i don't go a bundle on FPSs do I? (I liked quake some at the time tho.)
Res Evil 2 is the worst succesful adventure/exploration game i have ever played tho.

I'm yet to play the proper game in number 4, but I've played a lot of Mercenaries on a friend's save game and love it to bits.

I played through this recently and i) enjoyed it a whole damn lot ii) found myself wondering if it was A Major Game a whole damn lot, which is an oddity. (are there games of Major Importance separate from the issue of 'they sold a lot'? I suppose I was taking it for granted there were.) This kind of uh blockbuster game, where the nominal dynamic takes a back seat to the set pieces/cut scenes/scripted plot (see also: metal gear solid series) would seem to defeat that kinda category. I think the last few RE games but this in particular are aspiring to the complication of a Hollywood movie one could write a fair-to-awful term paper about.
The Dragon's Lair/Time Gal bits are a bit odd. Deliberate throwbacks?

my problem is i think this of most successful games like this. Half Life terrible, Res Evil 2 clumsy nonsense.
seriously mario sunshine was more fun and better executed. i have bought a few games worse than this (Prince of Persia Sands of Time for eg) so i'm not actually disappointed. i keep having to remind myself, i'm just trying to put the adulation in it's place.
it's a 7 or 8, not a 10+++++ OMG BUY THIS GAME NOW

Actually, sod the rest of the game, I've just remembered what makes RE4 great...it's the background music in the save-game rooms. I used to hang around in there for ages just so I could listen to it. It was gorgeous!
