i bought it cheap.
i'm playing it and enjoying it.
it's long (coo a second disk!).
Boy does it SUCK a lot at being an all time great game

meat-puppet "stroke victim" expressionless eye characters? yup
awful AWFUL dialogue? more so than ever before
linear progression? you wanted something more fule?
old-skool get through the level and a big boss? natch
puzzles that a kid playing wind waker would laught at? oof you got me

WHAT IS must-have about this game? NOTHING. balls to it's collect cash by smashing everything in site. balls to it's nonsense "trader". balls to it's loading screens.

it's the simplest kiddy structure game wrapped in adolescent nonsense and soaked in blood.

Eternal Darkness was way cleverer than this.

like i say, i'm enjoying playing it now i have it, but i's not a game i'd recommend or anything

The awful dialogue is a convention/tradition. It may not have been intentional in earlier REs, but it definitely was in RE4.

The thing that pissed me off the most was the trader not selling any ammo when as you can walk up to him much of the time you can clearly see he's got a fucking huge pile of it sitting right next to him!

HI DERE I HAS NEVER PLAYED RE AND NEVER WILL

Dan (Didn't Believe The Hype) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 February 2006 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Good things about RE4:

--The control/UI. I think it's really intuitive and fun, and it's sooo much better than the old RE games. It also feels fresher than first person shooter #2341342366.

--Yeah, it's totally linear, but I'm happy to go from awesome setpiece to awesome setpiece. It rarely felt like I was shooting through random cookie-cutter grunts, most scenes have some kind of twist.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 27 February 2006 16:29 (twenty years ago)

i agree with jordan

also as RE4 pal antexit points out it has kinda the perfect learning curve

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 27 February 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

I was in Dan's gang prior to RE4, but I gave this one a go and suddenly I could turn and aim without having to use some ridiculous button combination and that was enough to make it really good fun.

It's still a bit overrated, true. But it's a nice, fun-enough game. It's very very pretty. And mercenearies mode is great.

JimD (JimD), Monday, 27 February 2006 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Also, the set pieces! The cabin-under-siege. Sniping the monks. The big golem fella. Storming the castle. Things like that.

JimD (JimD), Monday, 27 February 2006 16:51 (twenty years ago)

It was sweet, plus... http://image.lik-sang.com/images//large/gc-re4-chainsaw.jpg

awful dialogue can be funny. this isn't, it just comes off ham-fisted, like they got the guy who does the lens-flare effects to do the script.

i'm finding some of the setpieces a bit tedious, though the truck while girl drives was some fun. there's a profound artificiality in a lot of them which is consonant with the placement of the trader, the gun shoot, and money lying around, but which jars with the game's appearance and action in general. plus i think i screwed up the big showdown at the end of disk 1 by just rocket launchering the guy. (actually perhaps not, isn't there a tradition of making the mid way boss impressive and anticipated, but actually quite easy to finish off?)

now i'm facing the marine guy and it's a bit repetitious. i think i have to knock him off the tower.

i do quite like some of the special/context sensitive moves they drop in from time to time. cute.

i guess i don't go a bundle on FPSs do I? (I liked quake some at the time tho.)

Res Evil 2 is the worst succesful adventure/exploration game i have ever played tho.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 00:47 (twenty years ago)

Resident Evil 2 is perhaps my favourite Playstation game that isn't called "Resident Evil 3".

I'm yet to play the proper game in number 4, but I've played a lot of Mercenaries on a friend's save game and love it to bits.

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 00:50 (twenty years ago)

The one line about "you'd call that a ritual? i'd call it - TERRORISM" really kinda makes clear how the dialogue is really written whilst smirking.

I played through this recently and i) enjoyed it a whole damn lot ii) found myself wondering if it was A Major Game a whole damn lot, which is an oddity. (are there games of Major Importance separate from the issue of 'they sold a lot'? I suppose I was taking it for granted there were.) This kind of uh blockbuster game, where the nominal dynamic takes a back seat to the set pieces/cut scenes/scripted plot (see also: metal gear solid series) would seem to defeat that kinda category. I think the last few RE games but this in particular are aspiring to the complication of a Hollywood movie one could write a fair-to-awful term paper about.

The Dragon's Lair/Time Gal bits are a bit odd. Deliberate throwbacks?

tom west (thomp), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 02:47 (twenty years ago)

they must be

also

why letterboxing??

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 03:44 (twenty years ago)

they need a next-gen Dino Crisis

kingfish has gene rayburn's mic (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 07:03 (twenty years ago)

letterboxing is a PRO point for me. not enough wide screen games. i've been playing Metroid with max squished in screen so it only looks a little too wide when i widescreen it

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 11:47 (twenty years ago)

you have a widescreen tv i take it?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 13:33 (twenty years ago)

let's see, it's 2006 and i live in the uk. DUH!!

:-)

seriously it feels like the last wide screen game i played was on the N64 - conkers maybe??

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 15:25 (twenty years ago)

i know nothing about widescreen tvs in the uk

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 15:27 (twenty years ago)

let's see, it's 2006 and i live in the uk. DUH!!

I have no idea what this means.

xpost

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 15:28 (twenty years ago)

In the UK, everyone has had widescreen TVs implanted in their johnsons.

Dan (Honest!) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 15:36 (twenty years ago)

you're mistaking that with widescreen STDs.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

this game is near perfect.

rio natsume, Tuesday, 28 February 2006 17:18 (twenty years ago)

it's a perfect success, but it's the same old unambitious FPS stuff with the same old problems of awful pseudo-realistic robot puppet characters and unimpressive characterisation. and no i can't agree that the dialogue badness is "arch".

my problem is i think this of most successful games like this. Half Life terrible, Res Evil 2 clumsy nonsense.

seriously mario sunshine was more fun and better executed. i have bought a few games worse than this (Prince of Persia Sands of Time for eg) so i'm not actually disappointed. i keep having to remind myself, i'm just trying to put the adulation in it's place.

it's a 7 or 8, not a 10+++++ OMG BUY THIS GAME NOW

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 21:15 (twenty years ago)

Half Life terrible

You've lost me. Did you play it on playstation or something?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 00:00 (twenty years ago)

honestly i cannot imagine giving a shit about the dialogue in this game.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 04:24 (twenty years ago)

no offense alan! but it's like worrying about mario's acting

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 04:25 (twenty years ago)

haha!

Actually, sod the rest of the game, I've just remembered what makes RE4 great...it's the background music in the save-game rooms. I used to hang around in there for ages just so I could listen to it. It was gorgeous!
