when i think about this game i feel like i've just picked up an invincibility star

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

I don't really understand why I'm not excited about this, but I'm not. I suppose I'm still just waiting for a proper Mario 64 II, and I'm never going to get one.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

mario belongs in 2d.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

Is this in 2d?

If it is good, I will buy a DS (lite).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

slocki otm more sprites plz

i think the gameplay is 2d but it uses 3d models? i dunno i've seen like one screenshot.

inert false cat (sleep), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

there are a couple youtube things with footage from the game:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=PRjzqc2l6Yw&search=new%20super%20mario

http://youtube.com/watch?v=DeZlrs4h6zo&search=new%20super%20mario

watching those makes me feel very nostalgic.

inert false cat (sleep), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

Mario Hulk!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

Not only that, but players can link wirelessly with a friend to play as Mario and Luigi in multiplayer mode.

that could be a lot of fun

inert false cat (sleep), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

Can they attack each other?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

hah i was wondering the same thing. i hope they can, of course.

inert false cat (sleep), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

Man, I watched those youtube videos and I feel, like, HEARTBROKEN wiht excitement and nostalgia. What is this weird feeling?

antexit (antexit), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

puberty?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:44 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm. Well, nobody's going to like what I'm about to say. But the thing is, my first ever mario game was mario 64, I'd never bothered with it before that (pre-N64, I was a PC gamer). And after mrio 64 (which was and still is my favourite game of all time), I played Mario Bros DX on the GBC. And that too was FANTATIC, I absolutely loved it, played it to death. Then I got a GBA, and played the Mario Bros 2 remake on there, and it ws a bit rubbish really, didn't feel like a mario game at all. And then I got the Super Mario World remake, and...pff. Overly complex control system, same old level designs I'd seen before, and too much secret switch/hidden exit faffing. I wasn't grabbed.

And yeah, the new one looks like it's going to follow on from that. So I suppose that's why I'm just not that bothered.

JimD (JimD), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:28 (nineteen years ago)

i am shocked and appalled.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:32 (nineteen years ago)

You went...BACKWARDS.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:35 (nineteen years ago)

Man, I watched those youtube videos and I feel, like, HEARTBROKEN wiht excitement and nostalgia. What is this weird feeling?

Exactly! It makes me nostalgic for how excited I was and the pleasure I used to get playing 2D Mario games when they first came out. I don't think playing those old games again will ever give me the same feeling they used to, but the New Mario footage makes that nostalgic part of me think that maybe I CAN get that same feeling again because it's, like, old but new ALL AT THE SAME TIME. But then I simultaneously feel sad because I really doubt it can ever be like it once was. And I also think "Man, I'm old now". And I also think "Why can't I get no satisfaction from killing Goombas and Snifits and making vines grow and bouncing turtles shells against stairs for infinite 1-ups like I could once upon a time?" O NEW MARIO Y U BRAEK HAERT??/

Lingbertt, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 04:50 (nineteen years ago)

You're basing your love of classic Mario on SMB2?!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 06:33 (nineteen years ago)

Antexit OTM. I got that feeling of excitement that makes you feel nauseous when I first saw the video of it in action. It was the same feeling I got when I first watched The Wizard and saw SMB3 in action and knew I had to have it.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 08:32 (nineteen years ago)

It was the same feeling I got when I first watched The Wizard and saw SMB3 in action and knew I had to have it.

I remember this feeling.

A. Lingbert (A. Lingbert), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 08:35 (nineteen years ago)

that movie gave the same feeling when you saw the dude using the powerglove, though!

electrogrouse (haitch), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

First major purchase with my own money was an NES, specifically for Kid Icarus, Metroid and SMB1. I'm currently playing Mario and Luigi. This is the future.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 12 March 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

Just beat partners in time; loads o' fun until the final boss(es)... why do developers assume that the final guy MUST be a hairpulling hourlong experience in an otherwise well-balanced and enjoyable game?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 12 March 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

Oh. Oh yes.

Man, now I have to get a job so I can buy awesome shit. I knew this would happen if I started reading ILG again.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

Yay Laura!!

why do developers assume that the final guy MUST be a hairpulling hourlong experience in an otherwise well-balanced and enjoyable game?

A friend and I just beat the Warriors, which does exactly the same thing. Dunno why we couldn't just stab him like in the film.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

I thought that boss was disappointingly easy, actually! (And it does happen like the movie, more or less, doesn't it?)

antexit (antexit), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 01:11 (nineteen years ago)

For unbalanced bosses, see Pokemon Colosseum. I gave up at the final hurdle in that, cos levelling up my monsters enough to beat the last guy would have required an extra two or three hours of battle mountain grinding. Sod that.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 02:38 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe it was harder on 2-player mode, or we're just rubbish :) Or maybe the rest of the game was just easier with two people!

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
I think it's time to start anticipating this for real. It's been 16 years since Super Mario World, and finally the true sequel that Mario 64 was NOT is almost here. 13 days away, and I'm pretty goddamn excited.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

It seems too simple to really wow me. Like, no crazy flying areas in levels. This is step back to SMB1.

JW (ex machina), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

it is of course typical nintendo practice to show you all the most exciting shit in the game in the first two demo clips.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

i AM wondering about like capes and stuff

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

NO TANOOKI, NO CRED

JW (ex machina), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

New clip refers to Mario as being 25 years old => This is meant as nostalgia.

If this is SMB1, the humble and almost clumsy everyman working joe on a mission has been replaced by some sort of ninja gymnast plumber, apparently.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

Whoever was controlling him had some serious stones to climb along that rope just in front of a Bullet Bill!

c(''c) (Leee), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

i think i must justify owning this. Loverly.
And simple is the point, methinks. Back to the future.

coz (webinar), Friday, 6 November 2009 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

coz I know you're fooling but I'm kinda getting excited about the Wii as a platform and if you have a list, I'd love to see it...the DS list you guys put together earlier this year on the DS thread has been pretty much my gaming agenda for the last six months; solid gold.

Euler, Friday, 6 November 2009 17:22 (fifteen years ago)

solid gold wii imo: Klonoa, Tiger Woods 2010, Little King's Story, Okami, Punch-Out!!, Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, Resident Evil, Resident Evil 0, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Pro Evolution Soccer 2010, House of the Dead: Overkill, NPC! Pikmin 2, NPC! Chibi-Robo, No More Heroes, Animal Crossing: City Folk, Metroid Prime: Trilogy, Mad World, Bit.trip series, Super Paper Mario, Zack & Wiki, A Boy & his Blob, Dead Space: Extraction, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, You, Me & the Cubes

upcoming: Metroid: Other M, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle, Fragile, Dragon Quest X, Monster Hunter Tri, Red Steel 2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2, No More Heroes 2, Sin & Punishment 2, Epic Mickey, Illvelo,
Fatal Frame IV (fan translated), Pikmin 3

coz (webinar), Friday, 6 November 2009 18:16 (fifteen years ago)

yeah.. see... i don't know, half that gold list are either gamecube ports and stuff that doesn't sound super appealing - or was ignored even by cultists. like klonoa, bit.trip stuff. dead space? super paper mario, isn't that totally forgotten at this point?

i don't mean to be such a debbie downer but i dunno

Nhex, Friday, 6 November 2009 18:29 (fifteen years ago)

dead space!!!

coz (webinar), Friday, 6 November 2009 18:32 (fifteen years ago)

dead space extraction is a pretty good game actually, a solid rental at least. anticipating far more wii games than ps3 games tbh.

zappi, Friday, 6 November 2009 18:35 (fifteen years ago)

I'm still catching up on Gamecube games (just got WarioWorld and Mario Power Tennis in the mail today)!

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 6 November 2009 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

Super Paper Mario was rad; my mom lol has a wii and over a Christmas break a couple of years ago I played that mf pretty much day/night. Maybe she'll let me have the wii; I'm sure that I played it more in that three day binge than she's played it since.

also I want Punch-Out so badly

Euler, Friday, 6 November 2009 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

you should. it rules!

Nhex, Friday, 6 November 2009 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

I wanted to like Super Paper Mario so much since Thousand Year Door is pretty much my favorite GC game but aaaaaaaaaaaagh ppl be talkin in it. I think the correct way to get through the opening scene is to set one of those drinking birds up by the wiimote and then go out for a walk.

10 grand slam tennis i think its called

This is surprisingly difficult with two players. Even cooperating, it's hard not to get in each other's way and mess stuff up. Crazy fun though!

wii ver, that is

original bgm, Saturday, 24 April 2010 16:55 (fifteen years ago)

maybe it's bc I don't play very frequently but I just can't get w/the controls. way too sluggish for a mario game.

original bgm, Saturday, 24 April 2010 17:06 (fifteen years ago)

The floaty, slow imprecision of the jumps really kinda dogs it. Seems like it was intentional to suit the multiplayer aspect of the game, where it does work (in the crazy contradictory/competitive sense).

Nhex, Saturday, 24 April 2010 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, "imprecise" is exactly the right word. I die a lot in this game and it often doesn't feel like it's my fault.

it's a shame because the level design is often pretty inventive but the game is just not that much fun bc of the controls.

original bgm, Saturday, 24 April 2010 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

i tht the levels were p lame

where display names die, unrecognized (Lamp), Saturday, 24 April 2010 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

it's not even close to mario 3 (or even mario world) in that respect, but I do think it's fairly good on the whole. the castles in particular.

tho I could do without the motion control junk, as usual.

original bgm, Saturday, 24 April 2010 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

mario had floaty jumping? don't ever play littlebigplanet then

aztec gamera (zappi), Saturday, 24 April 2010 19:01 (fifteen years ago)

The DS version had it too, but it didn't feel quite as sluggish. I most definitely like these games, but it's all part of a distinct, plushier feel to the games - I don't want to say "less hardcore" because the game can still have challenging difficulty, but it's definitely away from the general speed of both play and repetitive death from the originals. Even the music styles support this atmosphere. A strange fallback from converting the 3D Marios in reverse to 2D again.

In particular one of the things I wasn't ever able to get a hold of, but seems like an important thing I'm missing, is the technique where you start running - it feels very slow - and when Mario has accelerated enough, do multiple pinpoint successive spinning jumps. Sometimes the levels seem to be designed for this super high risk technique to be used, and other times it feels like you are forced to just tiptoe through.

Nhex, Saturday, 24 April 2010 20:30 (fifteen years ago)

Even the new Wii game had the "floaty" jumping! I'm glad to hear someone else mention it, because all my friends acted like I was crazy when I complained about the weird looseness of the controls.

Dan I., Monday, 26 April 2010 03:35 (fifteen years ago)

I am only 3 levels in (and I've played some of level 5) but the "floatyness" hasn't got to me and I never thought about it until I've seen it mentioned here. Floatyness could be a pester during boss battles but I'm sure the difficulty in this game is just fine (maybe a bit easy? - I can't say for sure yet). But Luigi or Princess Toadstool in Super Mario 2 would definitely win in a floatyness competition.

CaptainLorax, Monday, 26 April 2010 04:36 (fifteen years ago)

It's not just that the jumps are floaty, but the whole physics and inertia of running, jumping, and landing feels really weird - like how when you start running, Mario is like a tub of butter on ice, and it seems to take just a bit too long to be fast enough to jump forward - similarly, when you land. You can get used to it eventually, but it definitely doesn't have that click to it that SMB3 and SMW have.

Nhex, Monday, 26 April 2010 04:41 (fifteen years ago)

You should try Kid Kool on a NES emulator to feel the most messed up running/jumping controls ever... I used to own the game and I still like it but woo-wee

CaptainLorax, Monday, 26 April 2010 05:26 (fifteen years ago)

I am only 3 levels in (and I've played some of level 5) but the "floatyness" hasn't got to me and I never thought about it until I've seen it mentioned here.

fwiw, I didn't have too much of an issue w/the controls until the game got a bit harder.

original bgm, Monday, 26 April 2010 13:39 (fifteen years ago)

three years pass...

So I am playing Super Mario RPG, which is a really fun game and lives up to the hype. But it's kind of strange because it is the first 3D Mario game (complete with jump mechanics) and also the first CGI-rendered Mario game. At times it feels proto-Super Mario 3D World.

I am wondering why Nintendo doesn't just make a Super Mario Bros. CGI movie. The cutscenes (hell, the gameplay even) are already up there w big budget CGI cartoons imho. Plus an official movie that wasn't live action but actually made by Nintendo would be guaranteed nostalgia money, would have tons of marketing/cross-promotion potential, etc. Nintendo is shooting itself in the foot every minute that goes by and there is not a SMB movie in production.
