"I give up!"

Bits that just make you throw in the towel for the day, or even stop playing the game full stop. I find this happens to me a lot.

-The last boss of Bubble Bobble. After 99 levels of pure joy, you have to endure that shit? Impossible.

-On the Sims 2, I lived alone happily for weeks, playing it as I'd play the original. Then a girl from the neighbourhood started hanging around my house, and we started having "woohoo". Great! I'd been seeing her a while, so I asked her to move in. She says "yes"! She moves in, and I finally get to see her aspirations. She wants to sleep with 3 other Sims. What a bummer - should I kick her out or just let my Sim live as a cuckold for the rest of his life? I haven't played the game in weeks because I can't bring myself to decide.

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

She moves in, and I finally get to see her aspirations. She wants to sleep with 3 other Sims.

Haha, this exact same thing happened to me too! And I was playing in the "sims based on me and my real life friends" style, so it really did happen to me. I felt hideously betrayed.

Anyway, I engineered an "accident", and killed her.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

Ohhh, nice one! I'll see if I can sort that one out. I'll see if I can break every fire safety rule in the book and do her in that way.

Fortunately, only my main Sim is me, and this is just a girl from the neighbourhood. Still, it's a bit close to the bone. I can imagine this happening in real life too.

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

man I loved bubble bobble. Is there a good emulator out there?

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

MAME's probably your best bet, as the version I've got on Nintendo flashes like crazy when there are a lot of enemies on screen, so I imagine an emulator would do the same thing. Last time I installed it, it was pretty tricky getting bios files and what-not, but I think if you get MAME from here and this frontend it should sort itself out.

Of course, if you don't mind the flashing baddies you could get the NES one which would probably save a lot of bother. There are tons of NES emulators here, and I'll post the rom in the YSI thread if you have trouble finding it.

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Warcraft III: The undead mission where you have to protect the necromancer while the Alliance armies swarm all over you from all directions. I never could figure that out.

No One Lives Forever: I can't remember the specific mission but there's a point where the difficulty level jumps from "fun" to "OMFG what the hell??????????"

Deus Ex: The training mission. Never have I been more disappointed in a game's interface.

Max Payne: Also the training mission. The last time I was this disappointed in a game's interface was Deus Ex.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

GTA San Andreas - flight school.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, and the mission where you have to steal all the police bikes. I still haven't beat that one.

A friend of mine never finished the mission on Vice where you rescue Lance, which I did first time. I went over his to show him how to do it, and spent all night trying. We still haven't beaten it.

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

(Have I mentioned that I really hate FPSs? Because I do.)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

Metroid Prime. Do the intro level. Do about one hour of the first level. Get lost.

jeffrey (johnson), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

I was playing the Sims 2 using the "Broke" household. My oldest son had this hot red head girlfriend who was really nice to his younger brother. As soon as his little brother entered his teen years he started trying to bone his brother's girlfriend!

~~~~ DODONGO DISLIKES SMOKE ~~~~ (ex machina), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)
Fire Emblem, like 4 or 5 times, various levels. No Phoenix Down, so if anybody dies that's it, no more that guy. Finally got pissed off with it and didn't want to start all the way back from the fucking beginning. God Dammit.
TOMBOT, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)
"Warcraft III: The undead mission where you have to protect the necromancer while the Alliance armies swarm all over you from all directions. I never could figure that out."
i remember that, it was basically that you-have-30-mins starcraft level rehashed. Just build like 9000 ziggurats.
sux2bu (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)
Like Tom I could only take so much shit from Fire Emblem. Advance Wars tramples all over it in terms of fun anyway.
adam (adam), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)
My biggest "i give up" moment was in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for NES. You know what I'm talking about. The underwater stage where you have to dodge the lasers and kelp and deadly pulsing electric coral mazes, and defuse eight bombs spread out across the level within 2:30, wtf. Pretty much unwinnable without cheating, so I never won it.
Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)
I had this when I was a kid, and only bought it again last week. Couldn't do the level then, can't do it now.
melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 01:18 (twenty years ago)
I rented that TMNT game and kept it for two months because I was trying to beat that dumb ass water level! I finally did it too! (Wasn't worth the $75 late fee.)
The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)
Geez, I beat that TMNT dam stage relatively easily, as I recall! I had my own "I give up" moment for that game somewhere shortly past that, though. I don't think I ever made it anywhere near to the Technodrome. That game was stupidly hard (not to mention weirdly unconnected to the whole TMNT franchise, unlike the arcade game).
I'm trying to think of my own examples of quitting full stop like this and failing, unfortunately, even though this was a pretty common phenomenon for me playing as a kid in the days pre-Prima and GameFAQs. Some of the NES games in my possession I didn't beat until I went back to them much later on, but I can't think of why I stopped playing them/where I got stuck specifically (except in the case of Deadly Towers, which I gave up on early in just because it was totally crap). Oh wait, I remember my FIRST "I give up" moment ever, actually, the first (and last, for twenty years) time I played Dragon's Lair in the arcade. I played through it until I reached one of Dirk the Daring's more gruesome death sequences and I got so spooked as a result that I let the kid behind me in line take over my game!
Chris F. (servoret), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)
gave up on Need for Speed underground 1, due to having to race around the same track AGAIN and not being able to collide with anything whatsoever due to that being the race over. what a load of crap.
gran turismo 2, didn't even get as far as the third contest even though i pwned GT1 completely.
Tron 2.i was really enjoying this one until there was a level where you rise up in a cylindrical elevator with no weapon only to have to fight hoards of enemies and get killed pretty much straight away. i de-installed the game in a great rage.
Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)
ghostbusters 2 (amiga?) - absailing down a drain, with hands clawing at you from either sides, reminiscent of the futility of tht bloody underwater TMNT level on the NES. I give up!
cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)
Just build like 9000 ziggurats.
You have inspiried me to go back and play this game for the first time in 18 months.
The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)
Simpsons Hit and Run, i'd just had about enough of all the timed missions.
Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)
I was playing the Sims 2 using the "Broke" household. My oldest son had this hot red head girlfriend who was really nice to his younger brother. As soon as his little brother entered his teen years he started trying to bone his brother's girlfriend!
And this made you wanna give UP on the Sims?!?! Dude that sort of crazy shit is the best thing about the game :D The horny little fuckers. I keep ending up with lesbian sims all the time, I swear Im not forcing it on them and they just gravitate towards teh gurels.
Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)
Gave up on Crazy Taxi after about 5 minutes, because it was shit and it sucked.
Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 22 September 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)
i don't think i ever did beat "Raiders of the Lost Ark" for Atari 2600. not even after i had all the roms & gamefaqs, either.
kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 22 September 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)
I beat it once. My step-dad was in a bowling league with a chiropractor who wrote the cheats down on a legal pad.
The end of it was just Indy standing on top of the Ark while the Atari graphics did its wavy "rainbow" effect.
It was so not worth it. Horrible, horrible game.
Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)
Never beat E.T.
Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 22 September 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)
Anyway, I engineered an "accident", and killed her.
Thanks for the tip, bye bye cheating girlfriend!
melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 22 September 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)
nightbreed on the amiga. i didn't realise that the guy with snake dreadlocks is supposed to bite you in the graveyard, so i'd just keep resetting it and starting again. i was only 9, and hadn't seen the film.
rio natsume, Thursday, 22 September 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)
And this made you wanna give UP on the Sims?!?! Dude that sort of crazy shit is the best thing about the game :D The horny little fuckers.
When the Sim with my name gets old and dies (or I get bored with him), I'm going to make a family called the Aristocrats and leave them to have whatever kind of sex festival they want.
melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 22 September 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)
E.T. was one of the few games i did beat.
hell, i'm trying to remember all the games that you COULD beat, instead of never-ending repetition. Adventure was one.
kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 22 September 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)
bye bye cheating girlfriend!
Did she piss next to the painting before you fried her?
JimD (JimD), Thursday, 22 September 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)
Did she piss next to the painting before you fried her?
Yep.
It went through the wall, somehow.
In a delightful turn of events since my namesake Sim killed his girlfriend, he is now having "intimate relations" with another man!
melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 22 September 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)
And on that note, I should probably move all discussion of this to the Sims thread, now that I've given up giving it up.
melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 22 September 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)
Hahah :D
Trayce (trayce), Friday, 23 September 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)
It went through the wall, somehow.
Ah, these things happen.
JimD (JimD), Friday, 23 September 2005 08:29 (twenty years ago)
The President's Run in the first Driver game. Difficulty level cranked up to STUPID HARD.
Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 23 September 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)
Hah, I couldn't do The Maddox Hit mission on Driver, but pretty soon we worked out that if you drive backwards, the police will all drive the same speed as you and make no effort to catch up. That didn't help on the President's Run though.
melton mowbray (adr), Friday, 23 September 2005 09:29 (twenty years ago)
ha yes you both otm, tho i almost gave up right at the start where you had to pass the initiation test.
Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 23 September 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)
i quit Beyond Good & Evil when i hit the bug that wouldn't drop the card key from inside the ceiling.
kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 23 September 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)
Text Adventures are a hall of shame with this, for me.
Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 24 September 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)
I'm going to give up GTA San Andreas. I've done Return to Los Santos so many times and having taken ages to shoot my way through Mad Doggs house I then crash out and lose him in about 30 seconds. Totally shit, I'll just leave it now.
Currently given up on C&C Red Alert 2. Not so much frustration as total boredom (it was on sale in Game, I couldn't resist!).
(xpost) GTA flight school, totally OTM. Nearly resulted in foot through screen.
Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 26 September 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)
I have temporarily given up on advance wars DS because I can't find the time and determination to beat the space laser mission
cozen (Cozen), Monday, 26 September 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)
I had to give up Nintendogs because the five-minute demo ran out at Target. I think I need a pet.
The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 26 September 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)
I can't think of Nintendogs without singing it to the tune of "Crescendolls" by Daft Punk.
n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 26 September 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)
Buh buh buh, HEY, duhn duhn duhn, NINTENDOGS!
n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 26 September 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)
I can't remember the tune to "Crescendolls" and now I hate you a lot.
Dan I think it is obvious that you need to be seen in public trying to get the attention of a software dachshund by talking into the microphone of this:
TOMBOT, Monday, 26 September 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)
Has anyone played DRACULA on the Gameboy? What's the second boss all about, is it supposed to be impossible?
melton mowbray (adr), Monday, 26 September 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)
Simpsons Hit and Run, i'd just had about enough of all the timed missions.
The fact that if you messed up enough times they'd let you skip it was nice. But somewhere during the Apu level I just got tired of missions that came in several parts where if you failed on the third part you had to do the first two parts again... and again... It just got tedious.
I was really enjoying the game up until then, too. Oh well.
Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 26 September 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)
Whoa! I spat my dummy out last night on San Andreas. I attempted the Paramedic level on Los Santos and by level 7 I was shouting and screaming that I would never ever play it again, all because the blue markers that represent the awaiting patients are *really* difficult to see on the radar.
Now I realise that there is an option just to have 'blips' only on the radar. doh!
Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)
Dan I think it is obvious that you need to be seen in public trying to get the attention of a software dachshund by talking into the microphone of this:
I think it would be much better if I had a DS with razor blades on it.
The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)
no no no no Dan THIS, THIS is the best idea anybody's EVER HAD.
http://www.decalgirl.com/prodimg/ds/ds-confederacy-470.jpg
TOMBOT, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)
I attempted the Paramedic level on Los Santos
there's your problem. go for San Fierro, instead.
kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)
haha that's EXCACTLY what my house mate said
Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)
but it wasn't the city that was the problem it was the colour of the radar markers against the rest of the radar map being indistinguishable.
Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)
(and it's just so sodding booooooring too)
Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)
Is it a problem that my first reaction to the Confederate Flag DS was "I WANT TO PLAY NINTENDOGS ON THAT IN PUBLIC WHILE WEARING A DAISHIKI"?
The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)
Only if you name your chihuahua "Robert E. Selassie"
TOMBOT, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)
That was a human rights violation I just committed.
TOMBOT, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)
Hahahaha
The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)
attempted the Paramedic level on Los Santos
there's your problem. go for San Fierro, instead.
No, no, no. You gotta go to that town north of San Fierro, where Barbara lives.
I would always pause the game, walk up to the television screen, memorize where the blue dots were on the map, sit back down, and resume playing.
Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)
GTA:SA flight school was pretty easy for me. I still have yet to beat the final mission though and probably never will.
polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)
Totally. Plains is OTM even if his method will give you cancer of the brain. Piece of piss up north like. You're ambulance probably won't even be smoking by the end, all long straight roads and everyone gets out of your way (except police naturally).
I'm still not going back to that evil game. I'm just going to study and ignore the one eyed demon at the end of my room taunting me, offering me flashy fun and noise. Damn you Mad Dogg and your huge house of death!
Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 29 September 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)
Thanks guys! I just tried this and completed the Paramedic mission.
Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 29 September 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)
the fucking military base level in fahrenheit, grrr, this is so fucking hard.
Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 29 September 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)
Turrican 2. all of these games where you had to complete the whole thing in one sitting - no saves, no passwords. who thought that was a good idea? and you finally got to the end of the fucker and you beat the big boss guy, and there was another big boss guy, and then another after him, and fuck knows what happened after that because i gave up when that guy killed me.
Operation Stealth (aka James Bond: A Stealth Affair). show me someone who finished that game without a walkthrough, and i'll show you a liar.
Lee F# (fsharp), Thursday, 29 September 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)
Lee F# OTM with Operation Stealth. FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE.
I got passed the water level on TMNT on the NES recently and was over the moon, til I ended up wandering round in circles about 30mins later with seemingly no-where to go. I'll pick it up in 10more years time.
