Every FPS I've ever played since the original Doom.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Halo 2. Daggerfall. Phantom Brave (though I picked it up again this summer and had a blast).

Every FPS I've ever played since the original Doom.

Dark Forces?

even goldeneye?

rio nastume, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Okay, not Goldeneye. I'd forgotten about that one. (Only in terms of multiplayer, however; I never beat the single player game.)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

Master of Orion 3.

Every FPS I've ever played since the original Doom.

OTM! I dont get it... I loved Doom. But Ive never yet gotten ANYTHING like into any other FPS since. maybe now they're all too complex with their controls and weapons or something. Maybe it was new then, and now it's boring? Also I think I feel easier playing slower strategy/sim type games and maybe it just took noodling around to find this out.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

halo 1's campaign was amazing the first time, but halo 2, despite the rad multiplayer, just fucking repeated the first game's campaign more or less, with bigger backgrounds. ZZZZZZ. terrible ending, too.

Doom 3=zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. nice graphics, though.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 04:18 (twenty years ago)

Trayce, even GoldenEye?

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

Zelda 2.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 04:43 (twenty years ago)

I havent played GoldenEye Leeee... it looked cool from what Ive seen tho. I dont have time to try more than one or 2 games at a stretch anyway. I'm a sandbox gamer - I like a game I can pick up, noodle about with and drop again without worrying.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

Speaking of letdowns I bought an entire new PC just to be able to play Sims2, and to be honest I havent even had much of a crack at that, but that wasbecause mt monitor was shithouse. It felt like the end of xmas day as a kid when I sat with my new pc after a few days and thought "shit. I'm an impulsive idiot, why'd I do this?". Horrible.

That said, I just got a new snazzy LCD and nice new mouse and kbd so now finally I can get into the more mem-intensive games with gusto. I hope.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

I was excited about Drakkhen because it was the only RPG availible for the SNES when it came out. But of course, it sucks. KEMCO sucks, actually. Although I do like Lagoon and I still have every intention of playing Dragon View, which I think is the sequel to Drakkhen. I didn't cry though, like I cried for Wall Street Kid.

The biggest letdown ever was Xenosaga.

Allen E. Riley (allenriley), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 06:32 (twenty years ago)

Tiberian Sun

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 07:34 (twenty years ago)

Doom 3. They made Doom into a turd then polished it a nice shade of TOO FUCKING DARK.

Gran Turismo - the so called ultimate realistic driving sim. If it was realistic I wouldn't have to unlock 90% of the fucking game only to discover it's all the fucking same.

Black & White. I believed the hype. The hype LIED. Dull as dishwater.

Halo for PC. Holy shit how badly did they fuck up the conversion? You'd think anything that ran smoothly on a cut down budget pc (i.e. a X-Box) would be half decent on a £1000 PC.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 07:52 (twenty years ago)

Weird Dreams on the Atari ST.
I watched people play that game on some saturday morning show that i can't remember the name of. The release was delayed, delayed and delayed again. When I eventually got it, it was mind-numbingly difficult, buggy and frustrating beyond belief. Looked great, played like a dawg.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

Manhunt, every now and again i load this back up thinking "hmm why didn't i stick this one out", and after 2 minutes of play i remember. yawn.

Silent Hill 3 - what have they done to my beautiful game?? suddently i'm in a shopping precinct, but whats this I'm now in a subway? but why? so not anywhere near as good as the original.

grand turismo 3 on ps2, wow it's just exactly the same as the ps1 game but somehow it sucks more.

outrun on the speccy, my dad got me this for xmas. i felt really bad as i'd mivered him for it for ages and when i loaded it up on xmas day i just hated it. i had to pretend to love it though. sorry dad.

Manhunt, every now and again i load this back up thinking "hmm why didn't i stick this one out", and after 2 minutes of play i remember. yawn.

I liked Manhunt, but then again I scare easily. I couldn't play it on my own until I completed it. I had to get my friend Jack over for level or life.

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

I just wasn't impressed with the hiding in the shadows logic, ie you could be stood a foot away from an enemy but they couldn't see you just because you were stood in slight darkness? and the baddies weren't exactly terrifying now were they. nice sound effects tho.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the shadows thing is rub, but probably what made me find it so scary. The fact that they'd walk up and stand right in front of you, sometimes bumping into you and finding where you were. It gets much better towards the end, when the guys in gasmasks with rifles start appearing. They're scary baddies. The last boss is a massive disappointment though, after what comes before it.

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

i watched my house mate complete it, i did enjoy the level when he was running away from the chainsaw wielding pig. not *that* was bonkers.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

you could be stood a foot away from an enemy but they couldn't see you just because you were stood in slight darkness?

Thief was the same. You're standing with a guard 6 inches from your face and you're thinking "good job my character doesn't breathe!"

You ever get those freaky "I've been playing too long and too late" moments? I was playing Thief well into the wee small hours and I was doing the old "stand in shadow and let the guard walk past" bit when the guard stopped right in front of me and STARED INTO MY REAL LIFE EYES. Save and fucking exit!

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

hahahaha. Eternal Darkness would be like that, too. playing the game for 8 hours straight until about 4:30 when you'd start to lose it and the deliberate user-fuckery coded into the game began to really get to you...

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Xenosaga was SHIT
Front Mission 4 was ASS
Kid Icarus was a TURD

I see it's being reissued on the DS

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

OK, I like these screenshots. But Xenosaga was supposed to be sort of like something to do with Xenogears, but it wasn't at all really, it just basically sucked at everything and made no fucking sense.

http://www.1up.com/do/media?cId=3138953

I'd rather have them port Xenogears.

sega touring car championship:

because it was the quasi-sequel to sega rally, and they really nailed this weirdly intense aesthetic (german touring cars, throbby japanese trance soundtrack, red LED to flash in your line of sight when you needed to change gear)... then you played it and the handling was just junk. totally unplayable. such a shame, it coulda been a classic.

Resident Evil 3! Sucks! Stupid sidestep move I hate it.

antexit (antexit), Friday, 23 September 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

Final Fantasy 8 and 9. 10 and 10/2 were pretty awful too but by that time i'd already stopped anticipating feverishly. I went back and tried 8 on an emulator a couple of months ago and it was going pretty well but then those really awful flashbacks started to kick in where you'd have to control some of the dullest characters ever and then they'd fuck up all yr magic and guardian forces and such when you went back to yr real characters.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 23 September 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

I saw xenogears for £20 yesterday

is it worth it? tom?

CUT MY LIFE INTO PIZZAS ;_; (Adrian Langston), Friday, 23 September 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

i dfenitely rate ff8. that gets too much shit from people who dont like fmvs. its a good game, the magic system is a bit silly but at the end of day magic is a sily concept. ff9/10 i need to check out because thats way they go back t the old skool and have the blakc mages.

rio natsume, Saturday, 24 September 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

No, FF8 was largely bullshit. The characters were interchangable, both in personality and in gameplay.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 24 September 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

I agree with the interchangability of characters in FF8. Anoter thing i really hated was the magic system. I thought the materia system in FF7 was great but in ff8 you had drawing spells and junctioning magic. Magic spells are drawn from bad guys rather than anything as prosaic as learning spells and having magic points, some of the bosses have the best spells so instead of a big dramatic fight to defeat them you sit and keep yr guys alive while drawing spells from them. The spells you get are then junctioned to yr character to boost stat's meaning that you pretty much give up on magic altogether in favour of the stats boost.

hahaha re-reading this makes you realize that even a relative disappointment like the last third of dark cloud 2 (or whatever is applicable in yr life, dear reader) is still an emotional walk in the park compared to loading up the latest promising new release you've just paid full retail for and realizing within an hour or less that it could never, ever, possibly be worth your time.

madden 08 for wii is fun.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 05:09 (eighteen years ago)

ok here's the thing, is it fun in the first ten minutes for a person who isn't used to all the madden menu minutiae, or fun after 2 hours of tutorials and fiddling?

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know, but as a Madden fan, I would be furious if the game felt oversimplified to bring in the casual fan. The depth of the game is really the main selling point when compared to arcade-style football titles.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 06:01 (eighteen years ago)

argh.
I want wii sports NFL edition, I guess. All a bunch of Miis in pads and helmets plowing into each other. Can it be that hard to code?

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 06:09 (eighteen years ago)

NFL rights are an EA exclusive and they benefit in no way from diluting a juggernaut brand, Tombot; you know this.
I'll admit I haven't played Madden in five years, but this is fairly deep so far.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

I can't get over how HARD Madden 08 is. I'm accustomed to wiping the floor with the All-Pro setting, and I'm getting my ass handed to me on Pro. And it's not like the computer is doing cheap shit like intercepting a pass out of nowhere or etc. The computer is beating me fair and square, capitalizing on every dumb little mistake I make (forcing passes into traffic, not protecting the ball, taking risks on punts when I should be fair catching, etc.).

Also, the fact that the XBOX controller has the same buttons as the PS2 (B, A, X, Y) but in different locations is driving me insane.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

Wha? PS2 is triangle, square, X, O. The X is in a different spot though, it's true.

marmotwolof, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

Oh I think I mostly meant the X. But also, on the PS2 Madden the bottom-most button isn't a throwing button, usually, but for the 360 version it is: it's the tight end button or slot receiver. Also, the Y button is used for the running back pretty constantly, which is confusing too since I'm used to using L1 or R1 for my backfield. It's just real frustrating, and something I could easily fix by rearranging my buttons, but I'm trying to get used to it.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

Multiplatform games are going to be better on 360 for the time being, so better keep practicing. :D

EA in particular has been bitching about PS3 being a lot harder to develop for, and a lot of PS3 versions have frame rate issues and such. As such, a lot of developers making third party games are making the 360 version first since it's easier, and shoehorning that into a PS3 port creates more problems than they're ready to deal with.

The stuff developed specifically for PS3 seems to be fine, though. Maybe if they start biting the bullet and making the PS3 versions first and then making the easier to code 360 version, the situation would resolve itself, but unless the PS3 scores a respectable user base after more of the big exclusives hit, I don't know that the motivation would be there.

marmotwolof, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, that's why I bought a 360 instead of a PS3. Well, also because I heard XBOX Live/Marketplace was much better developed than whatever Sony's come up with so far.

Also, from this link:

Halo/Halo 2 - There's no doubt that both of these sci-fi shooters looked and sounded lovely and there was a lot to admire. But the blanket praise given to these games is ridiculous. What about the incredibly repetitive sections that blight both games? Yes, the AI was very impressive but ultimately it came down to shooting stuff. Fun yes, but not the Second Coming that reviews would suggest.
