it's so weird to go on wikipedia and discover there were all these sequels to your favourite games you never knew about... the kind of games I would DREAM about and then i had become disinterested in video games by the time they came out

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 1 April 2006 15:56 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't think I've ever finished one of these.

There was one for NES that I was really fond of...um...AIR FORTRESS!

That's right, it would start off as a scrolling shooter and then you would be a little dude out of your ship Master Blaster-style, floating around Solar Jetman-style.

There's no such thing as "Destroy" when it comes to shmups.

NEver tried, but want to: Radiant Silvergun

UN Squadron!

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Saturday, 1 April 2006 19:04 (eighteen years ago) link

I like UN Squarden and R Type for SNES. Was the Gradius game for SNES bad? Were any of the 16 bit parodius games released in the usa?

Ansible Adams (ex machina), Saturday, 1 April 2006 20:29 (eighteen years ago) link

air fortress sounds crazy.

will m's picks are all good. i wish radiant silvergun wasn't so impossible to get hold of.

gradius 3 for snes was really good! there is some slowdown when too many sprites are on the screen, but it's not a big deal. i've never seen parodius in the US.

sleep (sleep), Saturday, 1 April 2006 21:45 (eighteen years ago) link

from the capcom classics collection for ps2: 1942, 1943, 1943 kai. forgotton worlds is REALLY stupid/amazing fun for 2 players. you can go into shops named ITEM & SATELLITE mid-level and buy upgrades, and there are cutscenes with ridiculous dialogue and voice acting.

konami's twinbee games are good too.

sleep (sleep), Saturday, 1 April 2006 21:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Ikaruga looks incredible. Thankfully I still have a dreamcast.

I've played Raiden several times at arcades -- always a fun one.

m[ad(a)m]an (UL®) (blastocyst), Saturday, 1 April 2006 21:57 (eighteen years ago) link

I finished Outzone. and Rtype i think.

all the Nemesis games annoyed the hell out of me.

Blood Money on the Amiga was pretty good too.

Ste (Fuzzy), Sunday, 2 April 2006 02:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh, I forgot UN Squadron! Good call.

As far as SNES Gradius III: it was ridiculous fun. However, get a hold of the arcade verson in wahtever legal or illegal fashion you can, if possible. I believe it's the version on the PS2 title "Gradius III & IV" if you want to eBay it. They left a LOT of the enemies out of the SNES version to make it easier for home audiences. Howeve,r play the arcade version, and you will die every three seconds, like you should if you're playing a shmup.

Xenon 2!

ledge (ledge), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:08 (eighteen years ago) link

And a bunch on the Spectrum that I vaguely recall - Crosswize, Zynaps, Chronos...

ledge (ledge), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:10 (eighteen years ago) link

Uridium was my favourite in 8-bit days. I had a soft touch for r-type and zynaps too.
There were a few good ones on the amiga too, but I'm damned if I can remember names right now.

Greig (treefell), Monday, 3 April 2006 13:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Isn't there a Gradius or R-Type for PS2 that dudes here have recommended?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 3 April 2006 14:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Last Resort on NEoGeo I think, that was pretty super

there was just hundreds on the ole speccy. Rtype was something really special on the spectrum i thought.

I remember project x on the amiga, which looked stunning but was incredibly hard and took ages to load each level.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 3 April 2006 14:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Has anyone played Gradius V for the PSP? I think it isn't in a Capcom game pack? I heard it rules since they made the playfield bigger for the PSP screen.

Masked Intruder (ex machina), Monday, 3 April 2006 15:55 (eighteen years ago) link

SALAMANDER!

I spent a fortune on that fucker in the late 80s before I eventually completed it.

Pick it up for RIPPLE LASER!

Jordan:
I am a dude, and I can recommend these for the PS2: Gradius V, Gradius III & IV (discontinued but eBayable), R-Type Final.

Masked:
Now I wanna check out the PSP port of Gradius V-- first I gotta procure a PSP. Thanks for the heads-up, though!

OH and Trigger Heart Exelica, which is apparently good but I have not yet played.

I should mention I am kind of a giant nerd for shmups.

Will M., Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:22 (seventeen years ago) link

And I think when Jordan was asking for "dudes" a year ago I didn't realize what he was talking about. Ahh, youth.

Will M., Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:23 (seventeen years ago) link

One time, one glorious time, I beat Super R-Type on SNES.
All the Gradius games rule as well.

Life Force for NES is really frustrating until you memorize the levels, because the first few times you go through them, walls collapse seemingly randomly in front of you, and you have to know what part of the screen to be in ahead of time. However, once you memorize those parts, you gain that kind of satisfaction only laborious learning by rote can get you. hello ladies...

For horizontal shooters I'd pick Air Buster, and for vertical it would have to be Raiden - the game that got most of my loose change in '91-92.

― Onimo

I just discovered that this is on Virtual Console. Anyone played it? Is it as good as I remember?

It's strange how people complain about games only lasting 10 hours these days when things like Salamander, Project X* and R-Type could be completed in about 20 minutes (after months of swearing).

I think the scrolling shooter may be my favourite game type of the 80s & early 90s.

*ok maybe not Project X - it was rock hard and the levels took a fucking week to load on the A600.
