Starting it at level 19 or 20 on high speed (or even medium) is serious. And if it's two-player and you start fucking each other up with block-dropping doubles = FUNZONE.

that's right. but after you made yourself some room it's not so fun anymore, like reaching "midgame" at nethack , but the time it took me to feel that way about it sure was fun

Yeah, I guess the real fun is at the beginning of a high level or when you fuck up and have to clear some space creatively (clearing germs from the bottom up, etc.).

I don't think its appeal really needs a defense. It has the same weirdly altrustic yet compulsive theme as Super Mario Sunshine or Anpan Man, but applied to Tetris. I can see not being into it as a Tetris clone, but it's not a particularly bad one. I have fond Game Boy memories set to both Fever and Chill.
