I forgot how awesome this game was. just to sort of walk from screen to screen in. It was like playing a moebius comic book.

Anyway, it's only for windows at the moment and I need to go to class, but I hope this gets to the right people. Enjoy! for $7.00.

Wow, nice! I'd also forgotten how great it was. Going back and revisiting it, you can really see where Ueda (Shadow of the Colossus) is coming from when he name checks it as an influence. Same fairly minimalist plot and presentation, same sense of a massive, beautiful and largely desolate alien world to explore, etc. It's really an understated, elegant game.

The sequel, Flashback, was pretty good from what I remember too. But then I haven't played it in a loooong time.

Flashback wasn't the sequel! OOTW had a Sega CD sequel called Heart of the Alien that sucked.

I looooved Flashback. I remember playing on Genesis and thinking the graphics were so fucking smooth. It was visually pretty similar to OOTW:

I have love for Out of this World and Flashback, but I didn't get very far in either.

In fact, I think I only played Out of this World on the demo computers when my parents would go to Sam's Club, so I played the first few screens over and over.

This game was the shit, I loved it. Polygons!

kephm (kephm), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 00:24 (twenty years ago)

Ahh yeah, it wasn't technically a sequel plotwise... I guess the word "followup" is more appropriate - it came from the same developer/publisher and did have similar graphics and gameplay. I really want to play it now!

(Flashback also had an actual 3D sequel named Fade to Black I think, and it wasn't very good either from what I remember)

sleep (sleep), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 00:32 (twenty years ago)

either?

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 00:33 (twenty years ago)

oh, referring to:

Flashback wasn't the sequel! OOTW had a Sega CD sequel called Heart of the Alien that sucked.

so ootw + flashback: awesome, but they both had sequels that sucked.

OMG, so good. I would definitely buy this if I knew I wasn't going to complete it in 20 minutes.

Another World, or Out of This World, as you seem to be calling yourself nowadays, you can't beat me. Every time you challenge me, dare me, to play you, see if I can complete you, I do. I'll beat you in twenty minutes if you want me to, and I won't die once. But don't worry, I won't stop playing you, ever. Because that would be ridiculous.

what if you knew that the dude who designed OOTW was using the $7 reg for the update to drum up funds for a NEW game?

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 12:20 (twenty years ago)

Dude also takes some awesome pictures.

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 12:36 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, would and will buy it.

I can't wait to see what they've done with the bit where you've got to take off in a spaceship and crash through the roof of some kind of leisure centre. I imagine the framerate's a lot better in the new version.

On an entirely related note, I found this in my wardrobe recently:

i'll probably buy this. i pirated the original. guilt, etc

I've been thinking of doing that with 3D Realms' Boppin'. I spent so many years playing the shareware and not actually buying the game, and then playing it again when it was made freeware and re-released for Windows, so I'm going to send them a twenty for the good times and a big letter of thanks.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Maybe a tenner. It is freeware after all :)

I never got a cat with my copy :(

God that game was good though.
