This is for GC, apparently. Done by Yoot Saito, known for SimTower and Seaman, the Dreamcast game where you talked to a manfish.

I saw this in the game shop the other day! From the cover and the back of the box, it looked like the greatest thing ever. Reckon I should buy it next week?

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Thursday, 20 April 2006 05:58 (nineteen years ago)

YES. This looks so awesome.

Laura H. (laurah), Thursday, 20 April 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

JW (ex machina), Thursday, 20 April 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 20 April 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

i've been thinking about buying this.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Thursday, 20 April 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, what? This seems really baffling.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 20 April 2006 23:24 (nineteen years ago)

the next youtube goes into more detail. total war pinball.

kephm (kephm), Friday, 21 April 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

yes this is really weird! i think it would totally enhance the game if the soundtrack was really afrika bambaataa.

sleep (sleep), Friday, 21 April 2006 00:52 (nineteen years ago)

So who is presumably rolling this gigantic pinball?

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 21 April 2006 04:20 (nineteen years ago)

if this doesn't get a KD-like cult following, somethign tells me it's gunna be like Rez where you'll see it on ebay for $80

kingfish doesn't live here anymore (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 21 April 2006 05:19 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, OTM. The box just screams "hard-to-find gem". I think I will get this next week, as I need a new Cube game.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Friday, 21 April 2006 11:34 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
I bought this yesterday! I went out to get something for the Cube and saw this in the "new" section for £20, with the microphone and all. I asked why it was so cheap and the guy said, "Well, you're the first person to even pick it up!". It's been in there for about six weeks now, wtf!

I've read some so-so reviews, whining about it being TOO HARD and "only about five hours long", but after the way-too-long-and-way-too-easy Res Evil 4 that's EXACTLY what I'm after. Does five hours really pass for "too short" nowadays?

First impressions are v. good, and the youtubes up above don't show the main part of the game. While you're playing pinball, your little guys running about on the table have to do various tasks to open ramps and what-not for you, but to get them to go anywhere you've got to guide them by screaming into the microphone. If you upset them too much by squishing them with the ball, they stop listening to you and go off and do their own thing until you get their morale back up by sending more troops.

It couldn't feel more like Command and Conquer + Lemmings + Pinball, really!

haha, i was going to ask, it seems like there's an awful lot of friendly fire with this thing. how do you avoid hitting your own guys? in the video the friendly troops were lined up horizontally against the enemy troops - it seemed like you couldn't hit one group without hitting the other.

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

haha, you have to shout "MARCH LEFT!" or "RIGHT!" to make them get out of the way, then shoot the ball up at the enemy group. You can say "FALL BACK" or "RETREAT" to make them run backwards too. There are also powerups that turn your ball green, which means it doesn't touch your guys but does MASSIVE DAMAGE to the enemy.

There's still a lot of friendly fire whichever way you do it though, I think that's part of what the game's all about. In the instruction manual there's an introduction by Yoot Saito where he says Odama's all about feeling what it's like to be one of those nameless soldiers who's marching into the inevitable (death). He's completely lost his pinballs, but I sort of see where he's coming from :)

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

ahh, that's where the microphone comes in. this sounds funny; yoot is a madman.

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

How... odd. Still.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

It's a Gamecube specific microphone? Cuz I really don't know if I can do more than rent this and that precludes even that...

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

Still can't beat level four. Starting to get a bit angry now.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Sunday, 28 May 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

seven months pass...
The local Fred Meyer has this on clearance, 30% off of $20. I have no Wii nor Cube, but I still think I'm gunna get it, just in case. This is so gunna be worth like $80 on ebay in a coupla years.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 21 January 2007 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

Does it come with microphone? I might grab it for that much, it seems like a weird enough game.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 21 January 2007 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

I think so, in the packaging.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 21 January 2007 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odama

yup, looks like the microphone is included.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 21 January 2007 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

does it work with Wii?

UART variations (ex machina), Monday, 22 January 2007 00:10 (nineteen years ago)

Dunno. Wii plays gamecube games, right?

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 22 January 2007 02:50 (nineteen years ago)

Fuck this game. Last time I played it I almost lost my voice swearing at that useless miniature army. I have a bigger telly now though, so will test it on the Wii tomorrow and let you know. I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work, as I've been told all games do.

The microphone was included in the PAL version, so I can only assume it will be in yours too. Are there any other games that use it except Mario Party?

Is there a thread for games you really like but are so frustrating you can't bring yourself to play them?

xpost

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Monday, 22 January 2007 02:54 (nineteen years ago)

Add Okami to that list as well.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

UART variations (ex machina), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

On gamecube? Memory card slot.

Bought this, experienced same "WHY IS MY ARMY FULL OF UNRESPONSIVE IDIOTS" experience mentioned above, but really ought to give it another shot.

JW, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

Enjoy yr headache and tattered vocal chords Jon :) (nb. I still have not played this on a bigger telly)

melton mowbray, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, it's pretty frustration inducing at times, but I like it (I think.)

John Justen, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

It's down to $30 at everywhere I've seen it.
