Depictions Of Videogames In The Media

seems to have been a spate of episodes of what channel 5 would call 'America's Finest' shows featuring videogames:

NCIS this week had two sailors taking their MMORPG fights into the real world. http://www.tv.com/ncis/the-immortals/episode/274457/summary.html The scenes (especially the dialogue) of the punky lab tech playing through levels was cringemaking. (the entire show is so derivative. "NCIS is that anything like CSI?", "Only if you're dislexic", you wish...)

Tony Hawk was in CSI a couple of months ago. was ok.

And this from a couple of weeks ago: http://www.nbc.com/Law_&_Order:_Criminal_Intent/episode_guide/55.shtml
which was more interesting if you realised that it was basically the ID Software story with added murderation. (game segments supplied by Fat Frog http://www.fatfrog-studios.com/laworder/index.html)

comments? more?

From an article on Kevin Underwood, the Oklahoma cannibal bloke, in last Wednesday's Guardian.

...as well as buying items for an online game called Kingdom of Loathing (including "hell ramen")

Clue: if you don't want people to think you're a lazy fucking moron who isn't qualified to write for a church newsletter, TRY RESEARCH.

KILLER NET! Starring Jason Orange!

JimD (JimD), Monday, 24 April 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

Very depressed, Scott takes to his room where he retreats into a world of on line pornography. By this time he has upgraded his equipment, installing and MPEG card and a sound card so he can talk to prostitutes live. One of them, Sadie, offers to sell Scott a limited edition cd rom. He gives her his credit card details and waits for "KILLER NET" to arrive.

Ah, I miss this! Best awful games based ITV crime mini series EVER!

JimD (JimD), Monday, 24 April 2006 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

Once in the club, Scruffy (Simon Meacock) another student, warns Scott that Charlie or Rich Bitch as she is known on-line, has flamed him - humiliated him on the internet.

xxxpost

It gives me the vibe that "oh noes, the evil killer played sinister online game before his mind snapped" - why else the little aside about "hell ramen"? And it's Kingdom of Loathing...

I liked the GTA/Bulletproof-type game in The Inside Man. Less ham-handed a comment than the similar sequence in Clockers. The game actually looked real, too!

In Swingers they play NHL 93 (i think) before they go out on their date.

There are some crucial video game scenes in Yi-Yi.

Also, in the film D.A.R.Y.L.

Charlie Brooker's little column in the gadget section of saturday's guardian:

http://technology.guardian.co.uk/games/story/0,,1947550,00.html

"Apparently it's OK to be a sports buff , a movie buff , or a food buff ... but being a games buff still somehow offends society. People prepared to conduct tedious 15-hour analytical conversations about football or Kieslowski or the best place to find balsamic vinegar will have the audacity to call you a nerd for mentioning anything more obscure than Grand Theft Auto. Well, fuck your snobbery."

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

I seem to remember in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air you would frequently see them playing video games, and it would be a NES sat on top of their TV, but they'd be holding black megadrive controllers...

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

nerdy me spots ppl (eg) on soaps with often GC controllers, when the FX is arcade asteroids or summink.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

That's like Mortal Kombat: Deception in the 40-Year-Old Virgin. It's a XBOX/PS2/GC game but they're using N64 controllers for some reason.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

when the FX is arcade asteroids or summink.

yeah, but we've talked about this before, haven't we? the fact that modern video games sound like movies, so they use the 4-bit beep-bloop-blop sounds has a redundant shorthand to convey to dense and/or people that "yes we is playing the games"

Will M., Tuesday, 8 May 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

The dudes Sayid was spying on in his first flashback episode were playing it, while he was taking a bug out of the smoke detector. It was totally amazing.

Timesplitters in Shaun of the Dead and Resident Evil in Spaced were pretty great.

melton mowbray, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 10:24 (eighteen years ago)

Pong in King Of The Hill also, was one of the funniest things ever.

Ste, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 10:44 (eighteen years ago)

strange use of the comma there by teh Ste

Ste, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

when i interviewed the spaced/shaun/hot fuzz dudes we talked about the 8-bit sounds in modern movies thing. and how video games in movies are always called "bloodeaters 10" or something. they were very humorously outraged about the whole thing.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

There was a phase of a couple of months, during the mid-90s, when the Kennedy household in Neighbours kept their PC in the living room. And Malcom, Libby and Billy were always playing Bullfrog's Magic Carpet. You never saw the screen, but I always recognised the sound effects because it was happening around the same time that I was playing it to death myself.

CSI:NY Series 8 Episode 15 was set in the world of competitive video games. one bloke patched the code to make himself a smaller target and increase the size of the others. there was something else about legal highs. anyway, the most startling thing was they showed the code that the bloke had used for the patch:

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7215/7156991304_390c498b6d.jpg

it's quite obviously just html, printed in a cursive font (why?). did nobody notice? and both sheets are the same...

This, according to Eastenders, was what a videogame looked like in 2010.

I love how Phil Mitchell and his creepy son are playing it as if it's a two-player fighting game, when there's clearly only ever one player character on screen.

SVU is a hall of famer at hilarious video game depictions, between the hooker-beating GTA rip Tenacity (which totally hooked Fringe's Lincoln Lee) and the MMO obsessed South Korean parents becoming US trailer dwellers addicted to something that looked like a single-screen Dragon's Lair. Oh and that way early episode where Kragan brags to a murderous preteen baout how he made it all the way to level 14 and bagged himself a Gorgon.
