Suffering from an ugly cold and engaging in retail therapy; anybody else got this yet? Headed home to polish wits and will report back.

value priced at 19.99!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

i got it!

it's pretty fun!

there's a bunch of nice little suprises in it too!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

but if you're looking for something to distract you while you're home sick, be aware that you can only really get about 15-25 mins of entertainment a day out of this thing... you're not going to get lost in it.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

is this worth it? I'ma thinking about getting a DS this summer and this would be one of the titles

kingfish doesn't live here anymore (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

that depends on your attitude towards reading, writing, and 'rithmetic.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

Hm. s1ocks, yer comment makes me think I may need to go get tetris on the way home.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

don't waste your money on TETRIS.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

That's just crazy talk.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

1) you can download like 10 billion versions of it for free!
2) it is weird nu-EASY-tetris

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

Pls elaborate

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

OK, I haven't really played Tetris since the NES, so someone help me out here:

1) Since when are you allowed to stall a piece by rotating it indefinitely? This seems to remove a lot of the challenge - if things get too fast you can just stall it, look at the buffer (5 or 6 pieces long now??) and plan your next few moves. I don't remember being able to do this.

2) Since when do you get the ghost indicator showing exactly where your piece will fit if you drop it? Again, I thought lining up the pieces was part of the challenge of the game.

Have these things been a part of the game for a while now or what?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

My world is crumbling around me.
So wait for Nu-Mario?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

what is your advance wars situation?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

Negative, commander. Is this my mission?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

wtf, nu-Tetris is great! 10 person multiplayer from one cart, with Mario Kart style powerups flying about all over the place!

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

totally. GREAT game. (xp)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

melton, as the only ILGer who owns tetris ds, your opinion is disqualified as you are obviously biased.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, it's kinda fun! definitely not the sort of thing you could play all day, but it's a good way to wake up. Plus SUDOKU! Which I didn't know about. Apparently this was profiled on the Today show today?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

I am a big big big big big big big big fan of Brain Training, although it certainly hasn't been shy about screwing the life out of me on occasion by virtue of its handwriting recognition incorrectly translating my chickenscratch handwriting. There is certainly no shortage of games more "fun" than it (i.e. GO BUY THE MARIO & LUIGI RPG), but if you're like me and appreciate games that just let you fill time between other activities, you will play Brain Training forever and ever and ever. Low-impact video gaming at its very best. I jumped up and cheered just now when I got my brain down to 28.

Tetris DS is also insanely great in its own right although I see now that I must never ever ever play online against anyone ever (especially Melton).

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Thursday, 4 May 2006 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

I'm 22 by the way.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 May 2006 00:06 (nineteen years ago)

although I see now that I must never ever ever play online against anyone ever (especially Melton).

Haha, I still lose more than I win! We should give it a go sometime, maybe four player if we can gather two other ilgers. Sleep has it doesn't he? And Haitch?

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Friday, 5 May 2006 00:33 (nineteen years ago)

I might get tetris just for ilx multiplay.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 May 2006 00:34 (nineteen years ago)

That's what I thought about Mario Kart! But it hasn't happened.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 5 May 2006 00:37 (nineteen years ago)

we're going to have to come up with a better way to arrange for cross-timezone Fancy A DS Multiplayer Matches.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 5 May 2006 00:46 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, it first said my brain age was fucking 75! Got it down to 51 after some math and reading aloud James Fenimoore Cooper. The sudoku in this is a GREAT interface, compared to the handheld sudoku device I bought from Thinkgeek.

Jaq (Jaq), Friday, 5 May 2006 02:31 (nineteen years ago)

My workmate started playing this with me and when we suddenly got to see each other's gallery pictures that we had drawn (which shocked me), it was bonding like nobody's business.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 May 2006 03:23 (nineteen years ago)

i got to brain age 20!!!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 5 May 2006 03:43 (nineteen years ago)

despite the fact that when i had the opportunity to design my own stamp i drew a big dick!!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 5 May 2006 03:43 (nineteen years ago)

Uh, Slocki, that is maybe entirely why you got brain age 20?

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Friday, 5 May 2006 04:02 (nineteen years ago)

(lower age means better play, duder. 20 is der bestest)

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 May 2006 04:39 (nineteen years ago)

So much for JOEKS!

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Friday, 5 May 2006 05:23 (nineteen years ago)

melton, as the only ILGer who owns tetris ds

HEY YO

lil' merzbow wow (haitch), Friday, 5 May 2006 09:48 (nineteen years ago)

have to wait 'til 15 june for this here! shit.

lil' merzbow wow (haitch), Friday, 5 May 2006 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

i likea d' jeokes.

If you beat all the Sudoku what does it do? "you are super player"?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, I got Tetris from gamerang. It's... interesting. Wanna play?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 7 May 2006 05:09 (nineteen years ago)

If you beat all the Sudoku what does it do?

NUMBER 10 IS IN ANOTHER CASTLE

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Sunday, 7 May 2006 08:09 (nineteen years ago)

this game = too easy.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 7 May 2006 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

Haha! Got my brain age down to 29.

Jaq (Jaq), Sunday, 7 May 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

Aaaaand I'm 20. This IS easy.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 8 May 2006 01:03 (nineteen years ago)

An activated prefrontal cortex is a happy prefrontal cortex!

What I like best on this one is comparing the pictures, because Mr. Jaq plays it too. So I get to see his and mine are BETTER! Even if he does read aloud faster than me (which it tells me EVERY TIME). I am continually pwned by the Head Count one.

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 8 May 2006 12:01 (nineteen years ago)

head count on hard mode = HARD.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 8 May 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

i wish they kept separate scores for hard mode and easy mode. as it is there is really no incentive to play on hard.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 8 May 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

I was thinking of getting this when it comes out in the UK, but is the speaking thing compulsory? It's already ruined Nintendogs for me (unless there's a way of doing stuff without saying the dog's name aloud at the beginning that I don't know about)

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Monday, 8 May 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

no, speaking is totally not compulsory! they always ask if you can speak and/or are in a speech-friendly environment.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 8 May 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

no, you get the option to do stuff without speaking out loud.
i got a brain age of 21 last week and now i don't want to check my brain age again as i'm sure it was a oneoff & it'll plunge back down again :/

x-post

zappi (joni), Monday, 8 May 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

There's a hard setting for this game? Ooooh, now I'm excited!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 8 May 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

you can unlock hard settings on various tasks if you do well enough.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 8 May 2006 23:03 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
i got this at the weekend! really good fun.
currently my brain is 29. meh. i am 27.

teh_kit has 21 friends (g-kit), Monday, 12 June 2006 10:01 (eighteen years ago)

I got it on Saturday. I'm 23 and got "80s" for my age, but that was probably down to not getting the choice to skip the talking one and trying to croak "blue. BLUE!" as loudly as possible over and over and having the game tell me I was wrong. I haven't quite worked it out yet, sometimes I get the choice to skip the speaking ones, sometimes I don't.

Then to add insult to injury "mute" is one of the frigging words I have to memorise. My brain's 36 if it doesn't mave to talk though.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Monday, 12 June 2006 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

I'm doing an oh-so-scientific test of this:
1) Don't play it for approx. 1 month.
2) Test brain
3) Record brain age (41)
4) Do the training and sudoku consistently for 1 month
5) Test brain again

I had trouble with it understanding when I said BLUE too. I don't know what I'm doing differently, but it didn't have a problem this last time I tested. I think I'm being very short with it now.

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 12 June 2006 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

I quit when I was twenty.
The voice recognition sucks; I never use it.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 12 June 2006 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

Aw, I bought mine at Target.

I was planning to sticker it, but I don't know if I can bring myself to do it. It's just so fucking pristine.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 12 June 2006 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

Oh shit I played my friend's brain age when I was drinking. Turns out my brain is 35 yrs old when sauced

Dan I. (Dan I.), Monday, 12 June 2006 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

Also: "blue" "blue!" "BLUE! BLUE! BLUE!!!1 YOU FUCKING MACHINE, BLUE!"

Dan I. (Dan I.), Monday, 12 June 2006 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

At least it's nice to know that people who can speak are still having problems with this thing.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Monday, 12 June 2006 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

yes it usually takes me about 5 tries for each word.

sleep (sleep), Monday, 12 June 2006 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

35 yrs old when sauced

Heh - I tried it while very hungover on Saturday. Crazy laughing guy kept saying "Oh, a little tired are we?" all smirky, like he KNEW.

Jaq (Jaq), Monday, 12 June 2006 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

cressida that's strange, i always get the non-talking option.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 12 June 2006 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

i might buy this.

jeffrey (johnson), Monday, 12 June 2006 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

Me too! Altho how much maths is in it? I'm terrible with numbers. Wheres Ethan, he needs to come in and mock me now or it won't be right.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 00:02 (eighteen years ago)

There's a round where you have to do 20 or 100 sums in a row. They're pretty simple though. So far anyway, I've only done it three times.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 00:57 (eighteen years ago)

There's the Triangle Math bit, where you are given 3 numbers and add two of the pairs together, then add the results of those sums to get the answer. I just unlocked that one yesterday. The hard version of the sums includes division, whereas the normal version just has addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Oh, there's also this bloody head count thing that completely pwns me every time, where there's some number of people in a house, and people keep coming in and going out and you have to keep track and say how many are in the house at the end. I can't imagine what the hard version of this one's like, since I can't get through the simple level.

Jaq (Jaq), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 02:14 (eighteen years ago)

i played headcount for the first time today! i only got one wrong. my brain seems to have aged 6 years overnight though, darn!

teh_kit has 21 friends (g-kit), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 08:40 (eighteen years ago)

22 today! hurrah!
