OPO: Side scrolling Mario

I would suggest that Mario 3 in Mario All Stars may be the most interesting/fun but I still love SMW (and all Mario Games)

Destroy (is there any real distinction between POX,OPO and S/D as far as discussion generated? NO. People are going to talk about however many they want to.): Super Mario Land 1

SMW, as i've stated many times before, rules my school.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

also kinda in the mario continuum, yoshi's island and the donkey kong country games are all pretty perfect side-scrollers.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

I kind of think that Donkey Kong Counry sucks because the characters are so big so the viewport of the screen really limits level possibilities. (Contrast SMW)

Castlevania 2

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

good point, although it still works for me--i like how every level has a new great unique gameplay gimmick!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

After watching a speedrun the other night that blew my socks off - Mario 2.

(wait until the flying level with the bats - it's insane)

Should I buy Paper Mario? I must feed my Gamecube with new fun.

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

SMB3 > SMW > SMB2 > SMB. They're all brilliant of course. I really need to find an NES.

I liked DKC a lot at the time, but I have to say it's a very ugly game.

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

i'm thinking of getting paper mario too.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

I think I want to give Mario64 another shot with my wee.

JW (ex machina), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

ew

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

SMB3 > SMW > SMB1 > Yoshi's Island > SMB2 > SMB2j ("The Lost Levels") > SMLand 2 >>>>> SMLand 1

SMB2j shows how great SMB1 was. all of the gameplay changes are bad.

all of the challenge in Super Mario Land was from trying to see the enemies in the blurry nightmare of the original gameboy.

I really don't understand the hate on SMB2.
I wish they'd kept the character selection, plus throwing shit is cool.
That speed run is pretty fucking amazing and for whatever reason a lot more fun to watch than any I've seen of SMB3.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

SMB2 is crazy and great.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

here's a very impressive smb2 speedrun that uses savestates and slow motion for perfection.

SMW > SMB3 > SM Land > SMB2 > Yoshi's Island > SMB.

one month passes...
i got paper mario:1000 doors on account of the glowing reviews but it's pretty boring in my opinion. walking around talking to koopas, midgets etc. interspersed with tedious fights where rather than kicking a dude you select 'kick' and then sit back only to be underwhelmed by the results.

i like the games where you get to move things around (e.g. the unbelievably awesome f-zero gx) so when it comes to this turned-based press 'a' to read the next bit of dialogue stuff i don't get the appeal.

stoleyourbike (stoleyourbike), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

Yoshi's Island > SMW > SMB3 > New SMB > SMB2j (don't get the hate, this game roolz) > SMB > SMB2 (sorry) > SML2 > SML

(DKC2 > DKC > all of the above)
(DKC3 is somewhere in the middle)

Super Mario Land 2 was my first Mario experience. :(

I don't normally go for speedrun videos, but there are some jaw-dropping feats in this thing.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 1 November 2008 06:46 (seventeen years ago)

SMB3>SMBW>SMB1>SMB2>Yoshi's Island

I love them all though. Yoshi's Island could have been significantly improved by changing or removing the "baby mario crying" sound effect.

Watching that SMB2 speed run reminded me of how badly I shit my pants the first time I played through and the birdmouth exit came to life at the end of 7-1.

That was great. I love speed runs.

Same, that video had some pretty crazy stuff I haven't seen before.

SMW > SMB3 > SMB2

I liked New SMB, but so far its replay value hasn't been anywhere near those ^^^, and I doubt that'll change (although I will play it again at some point).

The rest I either haven't played or have played but probably wouldn't go out of my way to do so again.

xbox is fucked so i had to go old school. I am not as good at this as I used to be. My cheat for duck hunt still works though. You put the gun up to the centre of the screen and you hit the duck every time.

SMB3 always

Lamp, Monday, 6 July 2009 18:49 (sixteen years ago)

i was shocked to find that i don't have SMB3. I don't know if I lost it or what. The games I could find are not particularly good:

Smash TV (cool on 2 player but not so keen on going solo).
Time Lord (don't like this much but might try to complete it sicne i never did when I was a kid).
The Legend of Zelda (ok this is good but i cba with it just now).
Turbo Racing.
Double Dragon III.
Digger T. Rock.
Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles.

time lord is ok imo

timelord of the internet (Z S), Monday, 6 July 2009 19:05 (sixteen years ago)

my memory may be being harsh because i sunk a bunch of hours in to it but didn't complete it.

pretty sure i lost my nes/dreamcast/snes collections and systems on a move several years ago. the heart aches.

i forgot how bitching the start theme to time lord was.

completed Super Mario Bros 6 times since yesterday. On the 7th try. World 5-4. Only used warps on two of the attempts. Actually got game over twice (shame, shame, I know your name).

thomp, Thursday, 9 July 2009 20:02 (sixteen years ago)

the picture is mainly so i can show my bro. Although I am suitably impressed by myself. I always try and do it whenever I play world 3-3, first time it worked.

The Sorrows of Young Jeezy (jim), Thursday, 9 July 2009 20:03 (sixteen years ago)

jim have u managed to hit any of the infa1UPs yet? that was always the one thing i could never manage in SMB

nah, i also can't get to the minus level either, even though I watched a video showing exactly how it's done.

The Sorrows of Young Jeezy (jim), Thursday, 9 July 2009 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

yeah - i managed once but it took 4ever. i think it has to do with getting just enough of the pipe for the warp on scrn? cant really remember tbh
