I'm probably not because my wife won't let me.

Dan (;_;) Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 May 2006 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

I am not not getting a Wii.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 12 May 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

oh what, you can either have a t-shirt that says UH or you can have a game console called WII? I guess that makes sense.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Friday, 12 May 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

SHE DOESN'T KNOW ABOUT THE T-SHIRT

Dan (...Yet) Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 May 2006 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not thinking about not non-getting not a Wii.

Will M. (Will M.), Friday, 12 May 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not! It'd be redundant!

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Friday, 12 May 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

I'll buy all of yours. At discount prices.

JW (ex machina), Friday, 12 May 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

i am soooo getting one.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Sunday, 14 May 2006 01:08 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I'll definitely be buying one on launch day, cos both the GC and the DS had amazing launch line-ups and I'm sure this will be the same. And there's bound to be a good steady stream of triple A titles, it's not like nintendo are the kind of company who'll only release one game a month for the first 12 months, then one every two months for the next 12. And I'm sure every nintendo published title will be fantastic, rather than just one in three being properly great and the other two being souped up tech demos! And they'll be nice and long too, there's no way I'll have clocked them all in 2-5 days each. So yeah, there's really no reason to wait a year then buy a console for half the price with a decent selection of cheap games. I'd much rather pay a lot more, and have the console in constant use for the first year, and not collect dust at all, oh no.

(jeez, this saying-the-opposite-of-what-you-mean schtick gets tricky!)

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 14 May 2006 11:11 (nineteen years ago)

This thread, which made perfect sense to me yesterday, has now become a colossal mindfuck.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Sunday, 14 May 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

To respond to Jim's post, I'll be not getting a Wii because, just like the DS, I've found all the titles that it will be backwards-compatible with to be of no interest to me whatsoever - I've owned every console by every manufacturer for the past 20 years and have played all of the popular games through to completion, so it seems just plain silly to me for them to think that this "Virtual Console" and "GC Compatibility" are a big draw - certainly not to a guy like me who has a practically monastic fascination with this stuff, why would I want to play Fire Emblem and Paper Mario AGAIN?

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Sunday, 14 May 2006 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

(ok, reverse speak off, it's not worth it)

Oh yeah, I keep forgetting about the virtual console thing. But the problem there is pricing, I think. It looks like it's going to cost me more to download the old games than it is to pick up 2nd hand copies. Which doesn't really make sense, to me.

I mean, it's not that I don't want a wii. I do, and eventually I'm sure I'll get one, becuase there's no way I'm missing Super Mario Galaxy, apart from anything else. But I paid over-the-odds early adopter prices for both my GC and my DS, and in retrospect I didn't get much out of it. I could have had exactly the same amount of fun for a lot less money, if I'd been a bit less eager. So I'm going to wait, this time round.

JimD (JimD), Sunday, 14 May 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

I think my decision as to whether or not I'm getting the Wii ASAP or waiting will depend on Zelda mostly. I mean, I'm really eager to get ahold of Zelda, so if there's a bundle of Wii+Zelda that when subtracting the price of Zelda means the Wii works out as less than buying it on it's own, I'll probably do it. Of course I might be skint when it comes out and have to wait a few months anyway.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Monday, 15 May 2006 08:32 (nineteen years ago)

Zelda is a launch title = there won't be any bundle pricing.

JimD (JimD), Monday, 15 May 2006 09:20 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not sure yet, but the Smash Bros and Mario Galaxy footage went a long way toward convincing me.

sleep (sleep), Monday, 15 May 2006 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

Merrill Lynch predicts $200 price point which is of course a gigantic leap of faith considering that every Nintendo console ever has debuted at $200. $250! Perish the thought. That $50 is for Twilight Princess.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 12:53 (nineteen years ago)

I liked the way the microsoft guys at E3 were making a big deal of the fact you could get a 360 and a Wii for the price of a PS3. It had a nice "Let's all team up and fight 'em!" feel to it.

JimD (JimD), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 12:59 (nineteen years ago)

It's genius in the sense of "if you hadn't thought of this already, let me explain to you how you can have your cake and eat it too as long as you don't mind the possibility of missing out on Killzone 2: Dank Warfare or FFXIII: Gayballs Of The Scheisse Legend. I like the folks who've been posting how MGS4 is going to be a "must-rent."

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

Moore should put his money where his mouth is and try to sell a bundle for $480. Call it the Wii60. Oh I'm a genius.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 18 May 2006 03:43 (nineteen years ago)

if the ps3 comes with a bbq i'd pay $1000

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 18 May 2006 12:24 (nineteen years ago)

It seems like between the PS3, the root kit fiasco and the bluray (w/ REMOTE KILL capability if they detect you doing anything they don't like to your player), Sony is beginning to eclipse M$ as the most loathed company.

JW (ex machina), Thursday, 18 May 2006 12:59 (nineteen years ago)

Only because Microsoft isn't doing anything for the forseeable future.

I'd still buy a PS3 before a 360, though Kameo looks sweet.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 18 May 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

Kameo was disappointing, I thought. Pretty, but the gameplay is pure 1992. And not in a good way.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 18 May 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

Only because Microsoft isn't doing anything for the forseeable future.

VISTA (TENTATIVE)

JW (ex machina), Thursday, 18 May 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

hahahaha yeah Sony laying down kernel hooks for DRM purposes is BAD, because that's like, HACKING, but MSFT writing the DRM into the OS is OK, because - hey - feature not bug!!! Fuck 'em both. You do have to try pretty hard to get /. to hate you more than Microsoft, though. And then have the Economist write a sidebar calling you a "follower." BLU-RAY is the new PETS.COM!!!

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 18 May 2006 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

To be fair, the amount of evil in 30 megs of Sony rootkit vs. the amount of the evil in 2 gigs of WinXP.

JW (ex machina), Thursday, 18 May 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

the difference, as Jeff Bezos and Eric Schmidt can tell you, is in strapping value-added user experience TO your evil, which is how MSFT gets by mostly okay and Sony totally fails, like a guy who wears wolf shirts at the hygiene competition.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 18 May 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

why are people always so dowwwwwn on Microsoft?? I love them, because they infuriate people who aren't me.

JW (ex machina), Thursday, 18 May 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

I gotta admit, Vista looks kind of creepy on a surface assesment.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 19 May 2006 02:48 (nineteen years ago)

I can't wait until I have to deal with someone getting locked out of their machine thanks to DRM bs.

JW (ex machina), Friday, 19 May 2006 03:07 (nineteen years ago)

So, it turns out the company I work for makes the Accelerometer that's going in the Wii contoller.

But we charge over $5 per unit for bulk buys. Couldn't that potentially make replacing/buying extra Wii controllers a pretty expensive affair for us poor consumers? After all, we already pay enough for extra controllers without fancy accelerometers in them...

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Friday, 19 May 2006 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

I take it back, apparently it's Less than $2 for high volume customers. No excuse for expensive controllers then Nintendo!

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Friday, 19 May 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

wavebird = $45, wii-wand = $45

I should be working for morgan stanley or something, obv.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 19 May 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

This is going to be a definite birthday/Christmas present. Do I have to call it the Wii, though? I still keep using the name Revolution because it's about 5 million times less lame.

Laurah (laurah), Saturday, 20 May 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

SLASHDOT:

Nintendo has revealed to Famitsu.com, at the company's recent press conference unveiling its financial results, that Wii would arrive in Japanese stores with a maximum price tag of 25,000 yen. After taking in account various factors, the conversion to other currencies comes down to a launch price of: 225 dollars, 225 euros, and 150 pounds." Update: 05/25 13:45 GMT by Z : GamesIndustry.biz points out they hope to ship 6 million units by next March, and an Opera exec has said you can browse the internets with the wiimote.

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 28 December 2008 03:33 (seventeen years ago)

don't forget Zack & Wiki and PES 2008.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 28 December 2008 03:37 (seventeen years ago)

have to say that mario kart wii is really terrible compared to classic mario kart the wheel is such a waste of time and it exposes the shitty wii-mote controls which make the game 1000% less fun and the maps are just jacks of classics. total nintendo cash grab fuck mario kart wii

not counting amazing PS2 ports like RE4 and dokapon kingdom would rep for zelda, super paper mario and ghost squad

delicate mouse tune, crash of cat chords (Lamp), Sunday, 28 December 2008 03:40 (seventeen years ago)

I don't totally get what people are complaining about with Mario Kart Wii, but then I tried the Wiimote/Wheel controls for like 5 minutes before switching back to the Gamecube pad. What did people want more out of it? Better/more stages and old style boosting?

Same questions for Brawl, which was also fun. They're both pretty much iterative versions of the old games, which were good to begin with, plus some halfassed online additions (though I'd give Brawl some more credit overall).

Nhex, Sunday, 28 December 2008 04:37 (seventeen years ago)

The online part of mario kart is about all I play / HUGE plus for me. Endless challenge and fun. Just went back last night and played some Mario Kart 64, which I used to love, and it's still great, but people are looking back at that stuff with rose colored glasses - the game has come a looong way. Never played the gamecube or ds version, so I can't compare to those, but compared to 64 the track design is amazing, especially the remade tracks like rainbow road - going back to play those old ones feels so incredibly plain now. There's just so much more variety to the races now, that's what I like about it, more strategy and action. I also don't use the wheel, but do use the wii remote + nunchuck, which works quite well for me.

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 28 December 2008 04:55 (seventeen years ago)

i was goofily semi-trolling earlier which fell flat, obv. i'm not a huge mario kart wii fan although playing with the classic controller is a good tip and i appreciate the online play. only problem there is that half the time ppl want to play rainbow road which is my least favorite course. part of it is that kart and brawl aren't games i'd play by myself, even online, and i'm probably not as attuned to the improvements from the 64 versions

delicate mouse tune, crash of cat chords (Lamp), Sunday, 28 December 2008 05:25 (seventeen years ago)

Loving the Wii versh of Bully right now. Will continue to plough a lonely furrow for Endless Ocean, too.

I Was a Teenage Armchair Hongro Fan (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 28 December 2008 10:20 (seventeen years ago)

Wii Sports, Mario Kart, Mario Galaxy (tho I think I've realised I don't enjoy the tweeness of Zelda games much anymore)

Honourable mentions: Twilight Princess, Tiger Woods.

But seriously judging by what I've played to date the Xbox 360 has limitless amounts of good games, like the PS1 or PS2, more than you could ever have the time to buy/play. And you aren't forced to play ultra twee cuddlestein mountain games.

Local Garda, Sunday, 28 December 2008 18:29 (seventeen years ago)

Serious Games for Serious Gamers that play Serious Games!

I on the other hand am on Galaxy, Wii Fit, Princess, Metroid (is anyone else playing this at all? It's kind of amazingly beautiful and satisfying 24/7), and looking forward to No More Heroes.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 1 January 2009 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

Metroid really is pretty awesome, although the boss battles drag like a Fassbinder movie. it's totally worth it just for how amazingly well the game itself controls, though.

jamescobo, Thursday, 1 January 2009 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

Got stuck on some boss battle about half way through and never went back to it. Couldn't stand how many times you had to shoot those guys.
