late 80s
2d
platform
sidescroller
quarter eater (possibly console as well)
you play a tiny sword (or possibly axe) swinging barbarian exploring a big cave system and fighting d&d type monsters.

kind of a generic description, I know, but my memories are old and hazy.

help me out if you can.

Golden Axe?

No, more primitive graphics than either of those. About on the level of Joust or something. Now that I think about it, it's probably more mid 80s than late 80s.

i know what you're talking about i cant remember the name either its like ABRAXANANA or something! it was on NES!!! (or at least the one im thinking of) and the characters were GIANT for a sidescroller (in comparison to sai SMB1)

rastan was my guess :(

tom west (thomp), Saturday, 10 June 2006 04:51 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I'd guess Rastan too. That game was awesome.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 10 June 2006 04:54 (nineteen years ago)

Good tries, but none hit the spot. The game had a plain black background and the main stage was a big high ceilinged area with many tiny floating 'islands' inside it. A big part of the challenge was finding the right route to jump and climb to a particular spot, sort of like a vertically oriented maze. You could fall for great distances and not die.

Rastan looks dope!

Fabio on the cover!
The Wiz + War games were addictive and frustrating. I hated being inside that fuckin' tree.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 10 June 2006 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

I'm beginning to wonder if I imagined it. I'm kind of thinking now that the dude's axe could be powered up into a longer reach and maybe even he could swing on it like tarzan on a vine, but that may be another game, or even another figment of my imagination.

Have you tried searching MAWS? Do a search with Platform/Fighter as your category.

Black Tiger seens VERY close. Perhaps right. I mentioned my memories are old and hazy, didn't I?

Was it Conan? This is from the NES...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 11 June 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

I spent some time googling Black Tiger (thanks for the link to MAWS, noodle) and I'm now about 99% certain that's the one I remember. Now if only I could figure out how this emulator stuff works...

Does anyone remember a game where you played a Ghosts and Goblins style knight in a Castelvania 2 style world? Probably for NES? I think I am counfounding it with Stryder a little bit. (I bet sleep and tombot like Stryder [also: BIONIC COMMANDO?])

lord pooperton (ex machina), Sunday, 11 June 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

ha, it was Wizards and Warrior, fuck

Austin: Get Mame. Consider getting a frontend. Black Tiger rom available here. I tried it this afternoon, it seems pretty tough.

(Mods might wanna degooglify this thread? I dunno if linking to rom sites is cool.)

Strider on MAME is still one of my all time best video game memories ever. Strider on NES was cool but not so much totally awesome.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Monday, 12 June 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

Heh. Who remembers all three versions? I first did Strider at the arcade, then the NES, then the Genesis.

Have they come out with a followup?

kingfish du lac (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 12 June 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

there was on Genesis

lord pooperton (ex machina), Monday, 12 June 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

I never pld the NES one, but the Megadrive one's a total classic.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Monday, 12 June 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, I am trying to remember a computer game I played in spring of 1992 -- I was playing it during the Los Angeles riots. Possibly shareware. It was a single screen, and you moved around pushing blocks together. If you ran up against one of the walls enclosing the area, everything around you would freeze for a few seconds and whatever was chasing you would look dazed, so that you had the opportunity to do what you needed to do without any threat.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

It's called Reginald Denny's Inglewood Escape which was put out by Activision.

Okay, I got mame and the rom for Black Tiger but still can't figure out what to do to make it run. This is because I am a caveman banging rocks together. Can anyone help me?

it's a c64 game. i remember it was ok, would like to give it a try on my palm.

Sébastien, Sunday, 13 January 2008 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

ok it's Lode Runner and oh my there are newer versions too

Sébastien, Sunday, 13 January 2008 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

I liked Lode Runner 2 more than the original although it is very different.

abanana, Sunday, 13 January 2008 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

Cor, I used to have an excellent version on Lode Runner. Wish I knew what it was, or what the gimmick was that set it apart from every other version of the game. Wasn't there an isometric 3D one at some point? That could have been it, though I very much doubt it.

one year passes...

the c64 thread revive on ile made me remember about a certain game i would like to identify.
right now i have almost nothing to go on.
it was in a dungeon, top down view.
i remember there was some collectin' involved. projectiles, maybe. i remember they were black and round, possibly assemble in a pile "tri-force" configuration. it was on c64.
the control was slick enough. i don't thik i ever figure what i was supposed to do.
pshhh. i think that is the most vague description of a game ever.

Sébastien, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 18:28 (sixteen years ago)

i went through all the "List of Commodore 64 games" at wikipedia hoping to trigger a memory. clicked on a few things but nope.
