Old games you never got around to, but wished you did (and, ideally, commentary as you get around to them-- this thread exists to inspire you to do this very thing!)

Earthbound.

Got off my ass and started playing it tonight.

My thoughts, 15 minutes in:
- I don't know what the guys are supposed to be named. I like it when the game TELLS me what to name them. Because otherwise I name them after me and my friends. Which I did.
- I couldn't think of a favourite food so I put... perogi. Favourite thing, on the other hand, I TOTALLY put "iBook." If I had the space, I'd put "SNES9X on iBook."
- Pocky or Porky or whatever he's called is ugly.
- Oh, god, makes sense. Look at his mom. She may be the best sprite in video game history.

Oh wow, Earthbound is exactly the game I would put for this thread too

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 16 June 2006 06:53 (nineteen years ago)

Because otherwise I name them after me and my friends. Which I did.

This had made me feel weird / embarassed before

lord pooperton (ex machina), Friday, 16 June 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, when I played Final Fantasy 7, at the start I thought Tifa was Cloud's sister so I named Cloud after me and Tifa after my sister. Turns out the whole game was about me trying to fuck my sister, so I never finished it.

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Friday, 16 June 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

that's classic beyond classic melton.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 16 June 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

hilarious.

I never played Fallout. Should I play that for this thread? How do I get it? I can't seem to find it in any of the likely places.

antexit (antexit), Friday, 16 June 2006 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

i got it for my mac but i kinda hated the look of it... you can try it out if you want to

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 16 June 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i've been meaning to play fallout, too

gbx (skowly), Friday, 16 June 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

I found it on a torrent. I think ye olde computer at my place should be able to run it. I'll give it a try and report back.

antexit (antexit), Friday, 16 June 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

xpost- I absolutely recommend Fallout. I recommend Fallout 2 even more.
If you have a Windows XP computer, you need to get a Windows patch to run Fallout 1. But it's /so/ worth it.

Will M. (Will M.), Friday, 16 June 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

I never played Earthbound, Fallout, or Half-Life.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 16 June 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

the mac version of fallout is pre osx right?

lord pooperton (ex machina), Friday, 16 June 2006 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

Fallout is sensational.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 16 June 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

Will, could you tell me more about this patch? I've been wanting to play Fallout for 8 years and maybe now's the time.

antexit (antexit), Friday, 16 June 2006 23:15 (nineteen years ago)

fallout 1&2 are well worth playing despite having the worst interface ever.

me: earthbound, altered beast, lufia 2 (I keep trying, but it gets boring after a few dungeons), star control 2, xcom, ultima 7, king's quest 5 (or whatever # the jane jensen one was)

a.b. (alanbanana), Friday, 16 June 2006 23:45 (nineteen years ago)

antexit, i'll do you one better.

http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=8085D2033DD8AB5C

that's the fallout 1 win9x patch (should work with xp as well-- if not, i'm out of luck as well). all of the patch notes and details are in the file as well.

ahem

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 17 June 2006 03:55 (nineteen years ago)

anyone ever play Dungeon Keeper?

lord pooperton (ex machina), Saturday, 17 June 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

or DK2?

Evil Genius?

lord pooperton (ex machina), Saturday, 17 June 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

I keep thinking about "acquiring" one of the Dungeon Keepers. Any good?

Shadow of the Waxwing (noodle vague), Saturday, 17 June 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

I've never played the DK games, but a friend of mine in high school talked about it for a good hour once upon a time and how awesome it was. It must be pretty awesome. DK2, I have no idea. Of course, this assumes that Dungeon Keeper is that Sim-City-of-Doom game and not the Diablo clone where you cna get a donkey to carry stuff for you. I forget what that game was called but I didn't enjoy it.

Will M. (Will M.), Saturday, 17 June 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

I wanted to post that, FCT, but I wasn't sure how kosher that was around here.

Will M. (Will M.), Saturday, 17 June 2006 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

As far as I know, it's not problematic... is it?
Admin?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 17 June 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

dungeon keeper was pants, really. i kept playing it due to pc game hype about THE GENIUS OF PETER MOLYNEUX or was it the other one? maybe it was the other one.

anyway, not a good game.

tom west (thomp), Sunday, 18 June 2006 01:53 (nineteen years ago)

i liked it, not hugely enough to go dig it out the depths or try it if i hadn't already but it ws fun enough.

jeffrey (johnson), Sunday, 18 June 2006 01:55 (nineteen years ago)

Killer7
Shadow of the Collossus.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Sunday, 18 June 2006 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

rather loose definition of "old" there!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 18 June 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

Colossus, as I've said repeatedly on the game spec. thread, is top ten dead or alive material.
Killer 7 left me cold. Visually great, the controls just didn't work for me. On the other hand, your in game menu is run by a gagged leather boy... so it's got that going for it, I guess.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 18 June 2006 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

DK was great! I wanted to replay it recently but it didnt like WinXP/my video card/something.

Evil Genuis I was expecting to be in a similar vein but it was kind of crap - a very slow and unintuitive way of getting stuff done, minions that seem to only randomly respond to your commands, stuff seemingly not happening for half an hour at a stretch. I got frustrated with it and gave up.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 19 June 2006 04:22 (nineteen years ago)

Trayce is soooo OTM about Evil Genius. I started another thread on it. Oh so pretty but oh so dull...

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 19 June 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

I really really wanted to play Curse Of Enchantia on the Amiga when it came out (1991 I think) but I didn't have one at the time. When I finally got an Amiga 1200 I couldn't find the bloody game anywhere and about a year later they stopped making games for it anyway. A couple of years ago I finally managed to track it down on an emulator! Turns out it was a pile of shit.

Darramouss ftw! (Darramouss ftw), Monday, 19 June 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, when I played Final Fantasy 7, at the start I thought Tifa was Cloud's sister so I named Cloud after me and Tifa after my sister. Turns out the whole game was about me trying to fuck my sister, so I never finished it.

When I played Earthbound, I named Paula after my brother because I was 8 and I thought it was funny calling my brother a girl. So the pseudo-romance parts of the game got a little weird.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 20 June 2006 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

Apparently my friend named the girl after his girlfriend, and it jsut so happens the sister has the same name, so he thought his girlfriend was the sister and he got weirded out. Turned out it was just a coincidence.

Will M. (Will M.), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 00:09 (nineteen years ago)

I heard he named his sister after his girlfriend but it turned out to be his brother and he got weirded out.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 02:47 (nineteen years ago)

I just stumbled across a copt of Alundra. Worth my time?

Will M. (Will M.), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 02:03 (nineteen years ago)

Yes! It's a 2d Zelda (except better than any of the actual 2d Zeldas), with an insanely intense storyline. A great game.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 06:18 (nineteen years ago)

(except better than any of the actual 2d Zeldas)

HERESY

a.b. (alanbanana), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 10:30 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, but good heresy, the true kind.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

Y'know what's better than any of the 2D Zeldas? Crusader of Centy (aka Soleil) on the Megadrive.

Half loaf, half pompadour (noodle vague), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

(finished earthbound this morning... kinda boring).

Damn, Atreyu! (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

Y'know what's better than any of the 2D Zeldas? Crusader of Centy (aka Soleil) on the Megadrive.

Heresy! The totally OTM kind of heresy!

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 20:21 (nineteen years ago)

i prefer soleil to allundra but neither to zelda: link to the past.

jeffrey (johnson), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 23:00 (nineteen years ago)

rupee's are the greatest currency of all time. Speaking of which i have never played a NES zelda, i think i may try that tonight or tomorrow.

jeffrey (johnson), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 23:01 (nineteen years ago)

I've downloaded Centry and will try it later...
I have played Alundra and it's fun, but no way is it better than Zelda 1 or LTTP, or even the gameboy ones.

a.b. (alanbanana), Thursday, 29 June 2006 03:26 (nineteen years ago)

Centy vs Link to the Past = Battle of the Twee, with Centy out-tweeing, out-cuting amd out-plotting ALttP.

Goo-night, Swede Hurt (noodle vague), Thursday, 29 June 2006 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

Alundra's a wicked game. Not as good as Zelda on the snes but way better than that wind waker crap.

Darramouss ftw! (Darramouss ftw), Friday, 30 June 2006 02:26 (nineteen years ago)
