I'm talking about games like Carcassonne, or San Juan, or even Axis & Allies(tho that's pretty close to a mainstream game). Stuff that's a little to the side of monopoly/scrabble.

I'm started playing Betrayal at the House on the Hill, from Avalon Hill, and I'm looking at getting Arkham Horror, since we can never have enough Lovecrafty games.

Oh yeah, and this is a great site:

i love boardgamegeek. i don't know what's non mainstream, i play illuminati and the settlers card game sometimes. Also i used to play election day to entice my girlfriend to play since it ws politics based and lord of the fries because it ws cheap, i guess those might be non mainstream.

yes, Settlers & Illuminati would could as valid for this thread. Anything you have to get from a games/hobby shop.

I just got the Warhammer 40k starter set cheap off of eBay. I figure it'll either be an amusing diversion for a rainy afternoon or the gateway to a whole new frontier of neckbearded virginity.

can't it be both?

but yeah, something about warhammer 40K really brings out the comic book guys in every city.

i used to be crazy for settlers. now i have no one to play with :(

when i was a kid i fucking LOVED Warhammer 40k without having ever played it. I just had my uncle send me copies of White Dwarf and made up scenarios in my brain.

I played Illuminati! wiht my friend's cards a bit back in high school. I didn't get a lot of the humor as a clueless Canadian teenager (I have since started reading the actual Illuminatus! Trilogy and get it a bit more). As far as other stuff... I recently bought Atlas Games' Beer Money because I like Unknown Armies... haven't played Beer Money but I wasn't as impressed as I had hoped. Also, the board game Zombies!!! is incredible fun.

(Don't we already have a thread like this? Where GP and I ramble on? Perhaps that's just on ILE.)

The Thread Where We Are Board Game Geeks

Arkham Horror is a lot of fun, but the rules require a good bit of tinkering - in fact, I think it pretty much needs to be played using one of the variants or else it doesn't quite work.

why not?

also, i like having miniatures, and i think the new horrorclix would fill the roll.
