I think Dunkey has been on a winning streak lately, but I am a sucker for him playing any game that lets him throw objects and bonk NPCs. Like his review of Hitman or Far Cry 5 or the new Indiana Jones game (which I actually did see somewhere described as the best slapstick game since Hitman):

Not quite sure what thread to talk about this in, but Polygon is functionally dead now - sold off to a company trading in such high quality sites as ScreenRant, 99% of the staff has been let go.
It was easy to make fun of some parts of the site - it certainly didn't push the envelope in game reviews, and was often insanely generous to everything geek culture, but it did employ a lot of cool people and was I think tyhe only mainstream website to give consistent coverage to DTV and world action cinema stuff, got into Gundam and the High&Low series through them.
Their video content was always excellent, often very insightful (all their stuff on urbanism in games), often funny, often posted by me to various threads here.
This one is a little lol, mostly sad, but fitting to say goodbye:

Yep it was the gaming news site I went to daily, they were definitely cringe-inducing at times but still loved them despite their flaws. Not sure who I’ll replace them with, RPS is good but not particularly news focussed. Might just need to hold my nose and go back to Eurogamer.
― JimD, Friday, 2 May 2025 17:34 (one year ago)
I used to read Polygon a lot - I’ll not read it now. I’ve been a subscriber to Aftermath for a while, but while I support what they’re doing, there’s definitely a lack of reviews and it’s mostly coverage of the games industry/ecosystem than specific reviews or guides or those things you generally expect from a gaming site. I’m hoping it’ll get there eventually.

Some fantasy author guy brought up Fatman from MGS2 as an example of how awful Hideo Kojima's writing is, and he's getting dragged to such a degree that "Orc City" was actually a top ten trending topic for a while there.
I always liked Fatman as a character and a boss, so this has been fun; I don't necessarily like this social media pile-on thing but... oh who cares the guy's an obvious douchebag.

“Some male gamers have turned against Revenge on Gold Diggers. After its developer, Qianfang Studio, publicly thanked female players for their support, some men posted screenshots canceling their purchases in protest. The game’s director later issued an apology for hurting players’ feelings. Qianfang Studio did not respond to a request for comment.
The government’s responses to the game have been more ambivalent. Shortly after the game’s release, the studio changed its Chinese title to Emotional Anti-Fraud Simulator. The English-language title remained, and the move was widely believed to be an effort to deflect criticism and appease the government.”

*but i don't care enough to find out for myself
but it’s really dire now i think
― z_tbd, Monday, 11 May 2026 04:22 (one week ago)
i don't think that it's really gotten meaningfully worse, it's just been awful as long as i can remember and there's decent bits here and there on the fringes these days but never anything more
broadly, some problems that come to mind:-reviews heavily tend towards engaging with games as products rather than art, there isn't really a healthy culture of criticism overall-games are generally much more time consuming than music or film so the scale of coverage possible for critics is much smaller-the media ecosystem is extremely top-heavy in its coverage, much more than in other mediums, there's not much in the way of healthy niches away from the immediate mainstream-the games publishing ecosystem is more chaotic and it's very hard for most games other than the big aaa studios + a few particular bigger indie publishers to get much coverage at all-gamers as a population are probably generally crazier in how they engage with reviews than the kpop fans who harass critics who give kpop albums anything but positive reviews-there's no money in any of this for anyone and the economics of everything are just even worse than other forms of criticism
― ufo, Monday, 11 May 2026 09:47 (one week ago)
I feel that a lot of video game criticism, at least the stuff I engage with, is in the form of live streams or long form video, which seems to serve the media under consideration and ssolve the problems you list. People like Jacob Geller or youtubers like MinnMaxx (which often involves Geller). They're smart, seem to feature plenty of robust debate and discussion, and they're fun, too. (Geller's book of essays is great, btw.)
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 11 May 2026 12:38 (one week ago)
there's some ok stuff on youtube but it's a real shame that that's the only real way for it to have any sort of broad audience, video essays are just not a very good medium and there's plenty that might have something interesting to say but don't justify their length at all
― ufo, Monday, 11 May 2026 13:16 (one week ago)
I disagree. Maybe the epic five hour video model is a bit too much, but I've seen a lot of people do good, smart, tightly written/edited things with the format, and of course it lends itself well to discussing a dynamic visual medium like games. I do think the loose podcast format often doesn't really help, since it encourages time-wasting chit-chat and goofiness, like a morning drive show on the radio, but that at least keeps the vibe jovial.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 11 May 2026 13:51 (one week ago)
a 5 minute video feels like 3 hours for me and "goes on too much" is not a criticism i'd level at any other artform
