i just have so many old disks and want to play them. the actual emulator is crap and buggy and there are hardly any games available for it.

it doesn't sound hopeful though does it. most of my disks will have a copy protection on them anyway, so that's that shot.

battering my amiga emu lately.
played kick off 2 last night, and almost hit the roof when I finally scored past the super-goalkeeper.
Then i scored again, it was 2-0 at half time. too much pressure, lots of missed chances, and i ended up losing 3-2. gah!
― Ant Attack.. (Ste), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 13:13 (sixteen years ago)
are amiga emulators any better these days? i bet copyright laws wouldn't allow it but a bumper pack of the best amiga games + supereasy 'grandma-friendly' amiga emulator program would surely make big bucks and make many people happy.
just a quick flick through this thread brought back a whole host of memories: syndicate! silly putty! wizkid! pinball dreams! but i've been through the nightmare of winuae before and fucked if i'm doing that again
also this: I spent many a day with my amiga connected via a 30ft Serial cable to my next door neighbour playing Lotus Turbo Challange, Skidmarks, Stunt car racer, Knights of the Sky whilst chatting over a his younger brothers teenage mutant ninja turtle walkie talkies= amazing
― NI, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 15:16 (sixteen years ago)
the latest winuae i got from torrentz, came with all the correct rom files and a decent set of games. it seems pretty friendly to me compared to how i remember the first versions, and i've not had any problems with any of the games so far.
i have one for xbox too which is obv far more easy to use.
― Ant Attack.. (Ste), Thursday, 28 May 2009 07:58 (sixteen years ago)
remind us of some more classic games, ste! screenshots and the like. i just yesterday started playing fallout3 so this is gonna take up all my time for months but when im done and fancy something more basic i may well get the latest winuae
i always remember exile (as mentioned above) being the most incredible game, it was kinda free-roaming wasn't it? wonder if it'd stand up these days, same with elite ii
― NI, Thursday, 28 May 2009 12:04 (sixteen years ago)
also, why does the second disk drive never work with these emulators? it would save a lot of hassle with these multi disk games
i never played exile, was a click away from loading it last night so i'll go back and see.
― Ant Attack.. (Ste), Thursday, 28 May 2009 14:14 (sixteen years ago)
i couldn't figure out how to do shit-all in exile.
― man saves ducklings from (ledge), Thursday, 28 May 2009 14:25 (sixteen years ago)
i was gonna play a cadaver add-on episode thing that i'd never done before, but it stopped working after the first go.
― man saves ducklings from (ledge), Thursday, 28 May 2009 14:29 (sixteen years ago)
so in exile, if i've accidentally blown up all three available grenades (due to not knowing the controls) I'm going to have to restart ?
― Ant Attack.. (Ste), Thursday, 28 May 2009 16:44 (sixteen years ago)
Played Kick Off 2 Final Whistle last night, because I'm a masochist, and decided to play it in player cam mode rather than nearest-to-ball nonsense.
Hard. Played as a forward of course. On the rare occasion somebody passed me the ball it was really weak and I'd just mess it up anyway.
Struggling to understand what the hell I saw in this game, I remember playing it for ever, it's just torture.

I've just tried it! INFURIATING! So I'm strolling along and I see a well with a giant red flashing IN sign. So I go in, and wait for a tedious cutscene message, then descend a ladder. But at the bottom, I can't seem to get off the ladder, let alone go through the door at the bottom. Now of course I'm not quite sure if the controller is mapping everything properly so I spend a few minutes hitting every controller button, mouse button, and key on the keyboard, several times over, all to no avail. Eventually I give up and ascend the ladder, to be greeted at the top by another tedious cutscene message saying "perhaps a key would have been helpful". THANKS A BUNCH. Then I died shortly after. Still, great music, lovely parallax scrolling (ah those were the days), perhaps I'll give it another go.― ledge, Thursday, 15 March 2007 19:14 Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Haha that's funny because I just watched this video yesterday of someone having exactly the same problem with the well.

Ever since I read this post about Amiga Disk Format firmware for a USB/Floppy emulator, I've been thinking about getting an Amiga and giving it a shot. Well, I made a reckless eBay purchase yesterday, and will soon have an Amiga 1200 (which I coveted so much when I had an Amiga 600 as a youngster).
― CraigG, Saturday, 10 September 2016 07:51 (nine years ago)
I watched the Viva Amiga documentary. A bit disappointing, it covered the rise and fall and the mismanagement by commodore, focussing on the failure to sell it as a business machine in the US. It scarcely mentioned games (there were head shots of engineers saying "we were building a games machine!" but just a couple of screenshots, no mention or discussion of actual games), didn't cover the demo or shareware scene. There was lots of talk about the music and graphical capabilities (it felt like there were over half a dozen shots of people saying "this machine was like nothing anyone had ever seen before!") it mentioned deluxe paint, didn't talk about any actual music software but spoke to some musicians in the present day underground diy revivalist scene.

Yeah I watched that too, I did enjoy the crazy chip tune music scene footage
― Ste, Tuesday, 23 July 2024 09:07 (one year ago)

― ledge, Tuesday, 23 July 2024 09:15 (one year ago)
my 1200 developed a floppy drive problem and you needed the floppy to boot the massive 420MB hard drive. in 2024 you can probably replace all that with an sd card that's 10x the size.
― koogs, Tuesday, 23 July 2024 12:52 (one year ago)
Whenever I fire up the emulator I usually end up on Dpaint drawing knobs etc
If you like Dpaint, there's a pretty neat paint program that uses similar interface for pc called grafx2

At the time anyone serious about music would turn their noses up at the Amiga, because the Atari ST had built in MIDI ports and was therefore the goto for anything music related. But obviously the Amiga demoscene evolved in parallel with the rise of trackers, which were essentially music software for coders instead of musicians, and ended up being amazing in their own way. Good video on that history here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roBkg-iPrbw

The "Red Sector" tune at 8.43, from the bootlegged version of Great Giana Sisters, is such a classic

this is my favorite thing about technology, the stuff that really gets its legs creatively is not the "serious" stuff. for instance, interactive fiction - you had plenty of "serious" people trying to do it back in the 80s. thomas m. disch, one of my favorite writers, tried to do an interactive fiction game called "amnesia" and it was a mess. as a writer, he didn't understand the medium.

similarly the amiga took off in large part, i think _because_ it wasn't hampered by MIDI's assumptions about music. also, it had a lineage going back to the C64... a lot of folks were doing SID music back in the day and just stuck with commodore.
― Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 25 July 2024 15:09 (one year ago)
that trackers video made me more nostalgic than the viva amiga doc, just seeing the demos/crackintros.
