There are still lots of cheats on CS 1.6 - I don't think Valve are as diligent with VAC on the old version.

what are gun games?

In gun games everyone starts with a glock or a usp or something. You need to get a certain amount of kills with it then you get the next gun up, eventually progressing to Colts and AK47s and eventually you need a grenades kill then a knife kill or something. First to get through every weapon wins the game. It's deathmatch based so you keep respawning. You can steal levels by getting knife kills at any time (handy for people like me who can't use a Scout).

It fast and frantic and fun but really frustrating if you get off to a bad start and everyone else has a better gun than you.

guys, it's that time of year when we all adopt festive variations on our regular CS names. we have to play soon, if only to see the now legendary handles "Santa's On His Gay", "Jangle Balls" and "Melting Snowbury".

So my youngest brother came by over the weekend and gave me his old video card (and installed it). Before at my monitor's highest resolution, 1280 x 1024, the game could only run out 10.31 frames per second. With the new card the game now plays at 91.95 fps! M

y computer is now twice as loud however (yet still not even half as loud as the xbox).

Hey g-kit my Net connection died last night as I tried to change servers. I'll probably be around for a few games this week and Steam Friends seems to be fairly stable these days so I'll look out for you.

i've been thinking about installing this again, i don't know why! I just formatted and saw it there when I set up Steam again. I will probably install it, though, and never play it... and just play more Everyday Shooter and Football Manager and X-COM. I love Steam.

I've been playing gun-game/deathmatch/fy_ maps (sometimes all at once!) for so long that I haven't the patience for 'proper' Counterstrike. I find myself rushing every round, sometimes getting kills, almost always dying, then getting bored waiting for almost 3 entire minutes before I can play again. That the waiting involves reading/hearing a bunch of teenagers calling each other faggots doesn't help.

i managed to get pretty good at gun games and then gave up the game entirely. i hated the knife levels and final nade killing.

the servers i used to play with kit on were good for non-idiots though, can't remember what they were called.

Monkey Brothel ("the Broffle") was still operational last I checked, maybe a month or two ago, although it was empty about 90% of the time and still 33 tick. I still have a few of the old regulars on my Steam Friends list (including the legendary Darramous).

decided to get back in to 1.6 the other day. Got steam again and downloaded CS:S and it, didn't bother playing then. Today, while ilx was down, but not because of that, I decided to sit about all day playing 1.6 and trying to get back in to the zone. Then I couldn't get in to steam because my password had been changed, I didn't change it. Hijacked a dillion :(

Obviously this has precipitated a general paranoia about whether I have some key-logger shit going on or whatever, but virus software all up to date and not seeing anything, went on a mad password change spree and keeping tabs on my bank accounts anyway.

I think they disable dormant accounts or something. This happened to my brother and he had to send Valve pictures of him holding cd-key and a copy of today's newspaper.

ah, but defo not dormant because I was signed in the other day redownloading my games.

If anyone still plays this, I'm aching for some old-fashioned CS with people who aren't bots or idiots

When the steam mac client comes out (because I know a lot of you weirdos have macs!?!) we should try organizing some cross-platform ILX gun games. I was playing this over the weekend and it's amazing how many people are out there still shooting away. I'm still terrible at CS:S though :(

Who's getting this now that it's on Mac? I guess a ton of you already probably own it. Having always kinda sucked at this game, is it (as I suspect) completely dominated by hardcore players nowadays? Nice of Valve to release it on Mac a day early, though the sale is oddly cut down to only two days.

The improvements look to be nice (achievements & stat tracking), but right now, some things are broken, like all mods I think - for sure gun games, which is the only mode I really enjoy :(

Nhex - a lot of people still play the game, so there's a mix of skill levels, but yeah, lots of hardcore & it was a pretty hardcore game to begin with - can definitely be a frustrating experience. Some people seem like they've only been playing this game for the last ten years!

I know a couple of guys who have rarely played *any* game other than Counterstrike in ten years. Like they'll buy Wolfenstein and Call of Duty and Battlefield and Medal of Honour every now and then and bash through the single player in a day then try the multi-player for ten minutes before deciding to go back to CS for all time.

My gfx card died on my desktop PC a couple of months back and I've been exclusively using the laptop ever since and haven't got round to getting a mouse and proper keyboard for it so I've only been gaming on my consoles. Once I do I'll hook it up to my HD TV for some big giant CS action, if I can remember how to play it.

Ste - I don't know how much Counter-Strike you've played in the past, but yeah, it's pretty hardcore, especially in the sense that it feels like the majority of people still playing have been playing for the last ten years. Gun Games level the playing field out a bit & tend to be slightly more casual, I guess. There still are A LOT of people playing, Steam stats suggest over 50,000 people a day so you will still run into a mix of skill levels, but there will always be some top players on every server, at least that's what it seems like to me. For example, I'm pretty terrible at CS, and still play from time to time.

i was really bad at normal games, and only slightly better at gun games but yeah i still played it for hours on end. i'll probly end up more on TF2, and multi theft auto which was frickin hilarious multiplayer stuff.

aaargh can't get this to work. it views the servers (eventually) but clicking on any i just get a server not responding. i thought this might be something to do with my router settings but i managed to get other multiplayer games to work. any suggestions?
