I realize that we're now to the point where we have genres within genres, so let's start with WWII games and go down thru the list.

Fave WWII FPS: Call of Duty
Fave WWII RTS: Commandos (Axis & Allies crashes too much)
Fave WWII RPG: Silent Storm (polish programmers do WWII x-com style)
Fave WWII Flight sim: Aces over the Pacific/ Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe
Fave WWII wargame/boardgame type: none so far.

What's yours?

links will be provided upon request.

Panzer General. I make a great Nazi.

Pier Paolo Semolina (noodle vague), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 07:17 (nineteen years ago)

FPS: "Medal of Honour", Allied Assault. Even though it's a little short.
I thoroughly caned "Day Of Defeat" yesterday though, a good 6 hour session.

I never got into "Commandos" it was way too hard. The second one was anyway.

Never played a flightsim/RPG/wargame wwII game.

Oh what about "1942" ?

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 07:50 (nineteen years ago)

1942? is that the top down scroller with the P39s? That game is class. Happy days when I found a Java emulator with it. Not much got done at work that day. It goes on FOREVER!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 09:10 (nineteen years ago)

That's the one. It has 32 stages but I think it's just 16 different stages repeated. One of my fave shoot em ups, which I still play on the Mame thingy.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 09:16 (nineteen years ago)

I LOVED that game! So much fun but was very happy for never ending continues on the emulator. I have memories as a child on overnight ferries from France watching the demo and playing along always hoping the planes would last a bit longer this time before dying. God, those ferries were boring!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 10:05 (nineteen years ago)

1943 on the NES was the shit. better graphix/music/weagons.

kingfish high command (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

Castle Wolfenstein!

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

1943 was the jam. spent so much time looking for hidden powerups

Machibuse '80 (ex machina), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

There's also the Strikers 1945 games. Very good.

I second Silent Storm. Bloody love it.

Will M. (Will M.), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

1943 for the PC Engine.
It fucking OWNS.
I just wish that system had 3 buttons. Hard to do a loop without dropping a bomb.

ok people, i need flight sims. any suggestions?

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 6 October 2006 03:16 (nineteen years ago)

no idea with flight sims, i adored (non WWII) Falcon on the ST when i was like 10.

WWII games: Day of Defeat: Source is great, i should play it more.

teh_kit (g-kit), Saturday, 7 October 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

I always wanted a ww2 flight sim with a b-17 bomber where 6 ppl could each assume a role in the plane itself -- tail gunner, ball gunner, upper turret, etc... how awesome would that be? and to have a campaign with 30 birds in the air?!

i had envisioned an fps.

1943 KAI.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Sunday, 8 October 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

I've not seen a first person WWII game that looked FUN since Wolfenstein. And even then the first episode was fun.
Alot of them look quite realistic, but not fun.

Trying to not die amongs massive noise, violence and enemy fire all while fumbling with 12 buttons on a controller shaking in your hands...
Do those Medal of Honor games and their ilk even have cool music?

I dunno. If they could use a mouse and keyboard and you played with several WWII enthusiasts, they could be interesting tools for re-inactments.
But as a 'game' it just doesn't sound fun to me.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Sunday, 8 October 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

Have you tried Call of Duty?

http://videogames.yahoo.com/predownload?eid=4226

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 9 October 2006 04:18 (nineteen years ago)

All those games look the same to me.
"Look how realistic we can make war!"
War SUCKS.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Monday, 9 October 2006 11:35 (nineteen years ago)

Call of Duty is fantastic, and does have cool music (though I've only played the second one). Also, the underlying message of the game is most definitely "War SUCKS".

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Monday, 9 October 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

I have to agree with GZeus, I'm not the biggest fan of FPS WWII games. Though if Call of Duty is the one where it starts with the beach landing, that's one of the best examples of how much war sucks. Largely because I'm not very good at FPS, but I think I only ever managed to get up to the dugouts about once without just being shot to shit trying to get out of the boat/water. It just summed up the futility quite nicely I thought.

That said though, what time period is Operation Flashpoint supposed to be? I'm thinking much more present-day if I remember rightly.

To be honest, I haven't played many WWII games in general though. But I recently started Silent Storm, and it's great. It's rare that I play a game centred around killing where every kill is as satisfying as they are on this game.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Monday, 9 October 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

are there any pro-war WWII games?

teh_kit (g-kit), Monday, 9 October 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

That thing is, I'm glad Call of duty is all aweful and such if it intends to be realistic.

The problem is, I don't se how that's FUN.

I play games to have FUN, not get depressed.
I get enough of an adrenaline ruch playing shmups. I need a smoke after playing Lords of Thunder.
If I play one of those war simulators, I need a beer and some time alone.
Catharsis without revalation... Doesn't interest me.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Monday, 9 October 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

CoD2 is INSANELY fun, the action doesn't let up for a minute.
i don't understand how it could be considered a war simulator; it's an FPS, nothing else. It's not exactly Rome:TW.
One man taking on over 1000 enemies and taking a couple of hundred bullets in the process is pretty far from simulation territory.

teh_kit (g-kit), Monday, 9 October 2006 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

Fun makes me smile.
War makes me frown.

War is not fun.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Monday, 9 October 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

WTF you talking about? Blowing up Nazis with their own Stielhandgranates = fun!

The two funnest things to blast in any shooter ever:

1. nazis
2. imperial stormtroopers
3. zombies
4. faceless goons in N.O.L.F. games.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 9 October 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

See, I like Sonic games, and shmups with silly monster enemies. i'd LOVE darius if it were...possible.

A German WWII soldier was generally not a Nazi. he was a kid who was drafted.
The SS were Nazis.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Monday, 9 October 2006 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

My point there(I'm often to vague or obtuse, sorry) is that the more realistic a WWII game is, the less enjoyable it is for me.
Wolfenstein? AA I'M A FUCKING NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMP BASTARD!! I FUCKING HATE YOUR ASS!!! Then you shoot them in the face.
Put me on a real battlefield, that's war, that's realism, and realism sucks.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Monday, 9 October 2006 23:39 (nineteen years ago)

I'd love to put you on a real battlefield. Preferably armed only with a pen-knife....

If I were to describe my taste in games to someone, this would be it (my favourite game is Gynoug ffs!). Call of Duty 2 is totally for you!

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

I think that test ur brain game on the DS is for GZeus tho it might explode with depression if he plays it. Note: Not irony, I'M INSULTING YOU!

Darramouss (Darramouss ftw), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

That's dumb.
I mean, I have different tastes than you so I'm stupid.
That's utterly assinine.

i'm so into war games right now.

what is the RTS game Company of Heroes like? Anyone played it? The demo i got was unoptimised and required something like 1000mb of memory.

I'm trying to get back into Day of Defeat Source, so much fun.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 16 November 2006 10:53 (nineteen years ago)

I'm playing Rome: Total War non-stop right now and it's fantastic. It's turn based strategy/civilization building that goes to real time when you meet your enemy on the battlefield. The actual battles are simply amazing and a whole 'nother game in itself.

I bought the Gold edition that has the expansion pack which covers the fall of the Roman empire. The basic campaign game is like 300 turns or something. There's also a free download Rome: Total Realism that makes the game much more historically accurate.

lk (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 16 November 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

wrt: company of heroes....i'm not a big pc gamer, but people that i know and trust speak very highly of it.

M@tt He1geson: Sassy and I Don't Care Who Knows It (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 16 November 2006 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

yay! it's now on my desk. it look loverly. not sure about the free bundle of a warhammer game tho.

and i see it's powered by havok, which is nice.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 16 November 2006 15:19 (nineteen years ago)

Company of Heroes is pretty fun as RTSs go.

adam (adam), Thursday, 16 November 2006 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

and only runs on XP/Vista, the bitchez.

I tried Faces of War, which does have plenty of fiddly bits, should you enjoy those.

I now hold that CoD: United Offensive is a better game than both CoD and CoD2

My fave WWII game is still Squad Leader: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squad_Leader
