When I was in Westfall, it was easy to find pick-up groups, but my pally's level 40 now, and it's getting hard plus the 13-year-old boys are annoying. I'll check out a new zone, look around and think, "Wow, more shit to kill. Um great." The other day I logged in - after like two months' absence - and looked around and was like, "Shit, I cannot deal with this."
Someone talk me into pushing on to level 60.

Of course, I'm still flush w/ the newness of it all, so the "YAY KILL" thing still geeks me out. Especially now that I get to return to areas that gave me fits & beat the snot out of all those previously annoying wolves / spiders / stupid scaredy-cat furbolgs.

You deserved every damn thing you got and you know it. To you this may just be a game, but to some of us this is a very real thing. I haven't spent 75 days of my life playing this game so I can !*!#ing LOSE BATTLEGROUND GAMES because you think it's CUTE to screw around. If any one person caused this breakup, it was you. I was completely justified in letting your girlfriend know you were flirting with Menah. You think I ruined your life? Well as my idol Obi-Wan Kenobi put it in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, "You have done that yourself." I can't stand !!@@*#%s like you who think you can run around seducing all of the fair skinned Night Elven maidens after you get home from kissing your Mormon girlfriend on the park bench. Somebody has to stand up for the little woman. Unluckily for you, that someone turned out to be me. I bet you didn't expect me to find out your girlfriend's email address, did you? Yeah, too bad I did, with a little help from my good friend Google. (Look it up sometime, you'd be suprised.) I bet you also didn't expect me to make an RAR of all the screenshots I took of your flirting either. (All in PNG format, of course.) Heh. You didn't even expect me to put a password on the file, did you? Yeah. I called your girlfriend to relay it to her. I covered all my bases. Looks like you just got shutout. Hopefully your former girlfriend will be able to sleep soundly at night now. I know I will. Especially now that I know there's still justice left in this world. Justice by the name of Daisies.

played time: 102 days, 22 hours, 13 minutes
epic items accumulated: well over 30
legendaries: 1
and for what? NOTHING.
i played this game because it was fun to spend time with my best friend. i progressed with you so i could continue to spend time with you. i was there whenever you needed me at the drop of a hat. i was there in the beginning and ive never left since. i treated you like a brother. i loved you like a brother. you were the closest friend i've ever had. in fact, i thought we were even closer than brothers. i called to you when i had girl problems. i cried to you when that girl hurt me. i woke up every morning looking forward to playing games with you. for the first time in my life i felt like i belonged. for the first time i felt like somebody cared about me.
but i guess i was wrong. i guess i am as worthless to you as i am to anyone else. once a loser always a loser i suppose.
so here i am. continuing to waste the oxygen of people far better than me. its only fitting that you disenchanted and vendored all my stuff as it means nothing to me anymore. i hope you understand though that it never really meant anything to me. you were the only thing that meant something to me and taking that away from me has caused me far more pain than anything else you could do.
i am done here. i am done enduring the pain. i am done wasting the oxygen. goodbye

I just recently stopped playing as well. I wanted to do Kazharan or whatever it's called, but as I got close to 70 I realized I'd have to do over all the dungeons and things I already did, multiple times, just to get all the rep I needed.
There used to be a sort of freedom and open-endedness to the game before Blizzard gradually cracked down and tried to funnel everyone into the endgame content - we would raid enemy towns and take them over, go on the Zepplins and mind control people so they fell off, try to do instances with weird groups like four druids and a rogue or something, stealth into Ogrimmar and cause chaos, bet huge amounts of gold on stupid stuff...
WoW has become too much like a theme park where all the rides are on tracks.

you dont need any kind of rep to get kara keyed! you can pretty much pug the whole thing. i'm taking a longass break from wow tho, shit is just boring to me lately and also summer is here. it's not like i'm ever gonna see the black temple anyway.

Is WoW not so much a matter of skill so much as the ability to spend ages just doing the same thing over and over? (not being snarky)
― kv_nol, Saturday, 26 May 2007 00:46 (seventeen years ago) link
Yes and no. There is definitely skill invlved in getting through instances/raid dungeons, but reaping the rewards of said instances requires spending ages doing them over and over again.
― HI DERE, Saturday, 26 May 2007 20:03 (seventeen years ago) link
What is an instance? Is that like a quest?
To level up do you have to do specific things or can you just get through grinding?
Also a guild at work. Do you play WoW there?
― kv_nol, Sunday, 27 May 2007 21:18 (seventeen years ago) link
There are certainly variations in skill between players, so it's not completely mindless, but alot of your character's power relative to others is dependent on what equipment you've got. The regular quality weapons and armor will come to you as a matter of course as your play, but the really top quality stuff is only available through either tedious "raiding" (huge dungeons you need large groups to do, which requires lots of coordination and TIME) or a lot of effort spent killing other players.
Instances are dungeons. When you gather a group to explore a dungeon, the game creates a seperate version of the dungeon just for your group, so that you dont have everyone in the game competing to kill the same monsters.
― DougD, Monday, 28 May 2007 11:22 (seventeen years ago) link
Okay, that sounds a bit better than 500 characters all attacking a crocodile or something.
If you are a large group and you hit the dungeon, what happens if your character gets killed or you log off. Do you stay 'there' just suspended and when you log back in you have to make your way out of the dungeon afterwards?
― kv_nol, Monday, 28 May 2007 12:37 (seventeen years ago) link
If you're killed in an instance, your ghost appears in the graveyard closest to the dungeon. You must then - in spirit form - make your way back to the dungeon; upon entering it you will be revived.
This is alot less exciting than it sounds.
Certain classes like priests can resurrect the fallen; thus, it's of prime importance to protect anyone who can rez.
As far as logging, yes, you reappear in the same place. One city is designated your home city, and you can teleport there once an hour. That's how most people leave dungeons. Fortunately you can change your home city, so people usually move it to where-ever is close to the stuff they're doing.
― DougD, Monday, 28 May 2007 13:27 (seventeen years ago) link
Rereading this thread... I guess, all things considered, there's alot of good stuff in WoW, and it's well designed for most of the time you play it. It's just that, as I note upthread, once you get to the final few levels it gets really obvious that Blizzard can't figure out interesting ways to occupy players who are near the max level. And the game is alot less free-wheeling than it was when it started; they've outlawed all kinds of random activities. It's a bannable offense to climb on rooftops and shoot down on people below because that's "unfair", you can't use the game's random number generator to gamble with the in-game gold, there are a number of areas that are difficult but technically possible to climb to that are bannable if you're caught there because they're only supposed to be viewed from a distance, etc etc.
On the other hand, dancing on the edge of the game's language policies while luring people you dislike into outright swearing - and then reporting them to the moderators - is far more satisfying than the actual player-vs-player combat.
― DougD, Monday, 28 May 2007 13:48 (seventeen years ago) link
I have to say that both the blood elf and dranei starter areas are INCREDIBLY GORGEOUS, particularly Silvermoon City.
I am kind of on the verge of getting sucked into the grinding trap because my priest's renew restores 422 HP/tick and I know there's a guy in my guild who's at 700+/tick.

― kv_nol, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 14:05 (seventeen years ago) link
I don't play every day. On weekdays, if I play, I only play for about 2 hours. On weekends, I'll play for 4 hours at a time before getting up to do something else, after which I might play for another 4 hour stint. All in all I probably spend 6-8 hours/week in game on average.
