Day Of Defeat: Source - it's own lickle thread

I've never actually played the non-source game but I've been playing this one more frequently recently.

When it doesn't crash it's superb fun, especially playing with the frenchies (they love to chat don't they)

I found an amazing map last night, similar to the Omaha one but much more complex with trenches and a different objective to just flag pwnj. (Plant explosives to complete the mission and also to blast holes in the enemies barricades)

Not an overly complicated game by any means, but so much fun.

It's a good game, but I'm not very keen on the maps. I like the objecives/respawn style, but if you ask me, CoD2 multiplayer just feels like a better, more fun game.
I think the biggest gripe I have with DoD:S is the HUEG ironsights that obscure about 40% of your screen and cause you to move impossibly slowly.

yeah sight mode is stupid, so i never really use it tbh.

i keep coming across new maps lately that are much more impressive than the few default humdrum ones I was playing several months back. I particularly like the outside one in the snow (Flurry i think its called), (there's an iced canal running through the middle of the map)

i wanna get CoD2 but not sure if my pc is up for it.

I've played a bit but am pretty crap. Any tips in comparison to CSS?

Darramouss! (Darramouss), Friday, 19 January 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

Ooh Darra, we'll have to play sometime.

seeing as i'm only very average at both games i'm not sure if i'm in a position to offer 'tips'. The only main difference I can think of between the two is that DoD is mission objective based whereas in CS you can happily enjoy yourself (and complete missions) simply by just shooting the enemy. Whereas in DoD you have to work as a team heavily to complete the objectives, as the enemy just keep respawning.

WAHT NO

CS is, or maybe I should say should be completely objective based. The players that don't stick with the strats and play as a team are always the weakest link.

teh_kit (g-kit), Friday, 19 January 2007 10:19 (eighteen years ago)

alright, what i meant was that missions CAN be completed simply by just killing the enemy.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 19 January 2007 10:49 (eighteen years ago)

whereas in DOD you can't do that, you HAVE to complete the missions tasks.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 19 January 2007 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

and when you know you can just respawn, i think you end up taking greater risks.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 19 January 2007 10:53 (eighteen years ago)

i'm not sure if any of this advice helps someone play better tho, learning the maps is probably the key. If you can play CS you can play this.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 19 January 2007 10:56 (eighteen years ago)

The trouble I have in DoD is the weapon accuracy. I'm used to CS's guns and how they move but the WW2 era ones are completely different.

Darramouss! (Darramouss), Friday, 19 January 2007 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

yes, i tend to always use the simple rifle- a single shot to someones head will suffice (the german rifle is more powerful but the american one can fire a good few shots before reloading). and i never bother with the iron sights.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 19 January 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

i'm utter useless with the machine guns

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 19 January 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

I can't get used to the way the weapons handle at all, but this is purely because I'm used to using the exact same weapons in CoD2, which plays very differently, and at which I play a great deal better.

one year passes...

Big new update is out + free weekend starting July 4th...
http://www.steampowered.com/dod/palermo/

I've never played this game too much, but I've always wanted to play it more. Maybe I will now. Honestly, I haven't played it enough that I'm not confused every time I try. Plus, most of the people who have still been playing it seem to be quite hardcore Day of Defeat players. I just finished trying a game out to check out the new update and got killed 24 times while only managing to get 11 kills. There is something appealingly clunky about it though.

It's simple enough to be able to become real good real quick, if you are willing to, but I find it gets boring real quickly too.

so what's in the update ?

Ste, Thursday, 3 July 2008 09:23 (seventeen years ago)

I played a few more games last night, on a few different maps, and did feel llike I was getting a little bit of a grasp on it.

The update, from what I understand, moved the game into the Orange Box engine, so now it has a lot of the stuff they put into Team Fortress 2, like achievements, freeze cams, and better player stats. I've copied the details below (or you can follow the link I posted above)...

Palermo
Introducing Palermo, a new Day of Defeat: Source map from Magnar "insta" Jenssen. This map's design was inspired by the Italian port city of the same name and was also based in part on "Salerno", a popular community map. Palermo features five capture points, four of which often flip back and forth between teams during play. The central plaza's two-person capture point is the map's key strategic area.

Steam Community Integration
Steam Community avatars will now appear next to each player name in the scoreboard, on the end-of-round panel, and as part of the newly-added freeze cam. Also, when you have friends playing with you in the game you'll be able to spot them using the new Friend icon next to their avatar on the scoreboard.

Achievements
There are now 51 unique achievements that you can earn for your play in-game. We've designed them to cover a variety of different play styles and specializations, and to recognize some of the rare and amazing feats people pull off while playing. For example, Jack of All Trades rewards players for earning a kill with a Machine Gun, Sniper Rifle, Rifle, Sub-Machine Gun, and a Grenade all in a single life.

Player Stats
Day of Defeat: Source players can now show off their own stats and achievement progress in the Steam Community, using a method similar to Team Fortress 2's gameplay stats. Detailed statistics including usage of each weapon and class will be gathered displayed, giving players an at-a-glance view of each other's specific strengths.

Freeze Cam
Tired of getting killed by snipers without being able to tell where the fire is coming from? Day of Defeat: Source now has a freeze camera of your attacker, which will let you know where they are (or where they were when they shot you) and also allows you to take a screenshot for posterity. Also, if you score three consecutive kills against another individual player, you will be called out as "dominating" them.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 3 July 2008 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

Playing this a lot the last few days and am really getting into it. Though I could see how eventually it could get dull, as most maps & games are kind of interchangeable - you don't get the variety of tactics that you can find in Team Fortress 2. The new achievements and stat tracking maybe add a little to the experience?

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 4 July 2008 18:45 (seventeen years ago)

my Steam account won't load :(

Ste, Saturday, 5 July 2008 01:52 (seventeen years ago)

Did you figure out the problem? Was it with your id or the steam client just wouldn't load? If it's the client, maybe try downloading it again (it's small).

Also, if anybody wants to add me, my id is jefflev13

Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 5 July 2008 08:08 (seventeen years ago)

Ste, Saturday, 5 July 2008 09:30 (seventeen years ago)

Not sure what you are talking about - I'd have to see a screen shot. This is how it looks when I'm running it... pretty clean. maybe you have some console commands turned on or something?

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 14 July 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

got it, it was the command Net_graph 0
