best and worst cutscenes/FMVs ever.

In a lot of ways, I'm not a big fan of cutscenes and overdone plotlines in games. It just gets in the way of shit, most of the time it's bad, hammy, corny. The way some kind of plot gets pushed over the top of the game leads to my worst kind of computer game thing, the linear, on-rails plot, like "Quake 4", which is the WORST COMPUTER GAME EVER MADE.

That said, the best for me and the way it shd all be done is probably something from GTA:SA. As long as it isn't one of the ones featuring the truth, who was just annoying. Most of them are convincingly acted, nicely animated, and funny when they're supposed to be funny. They advance the plot & give you a little break, but don't get in the way For some reason I can't find anything on Youtube. Off the top of my head, my favourite one is the one where CJ picks up Kent Paul and Maccer from the desert and Maccer describes himself has having "wanked myself into a stupor". The scripts are great, the dialogue, nuances etc are as good as a lot of good stuff in other media. I never felt talked down to by the script.

Worst I've yet seen, and the inspiration for starting this thread is this:

The final scene from "Tomb Raider: Legend"

OMG at that dialogue. Is is so, so BAD. I was actually contemplating buying this game based on the review someone linked to in that tomb raider thread I started the other week. Now, I dunno, man. That's really terrible. Insultingly bad.

Plz link to yr favourites & unfavourites if they can be found on Youtube or elsewhere & tell me what you like and don't like about them.

Enh, I thought Quake 4 was okay. certainly not as excreable as half the other shooters out there. the strogification scene was kinda neat.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 12 January 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

The Stroggification bit was pretty good, I must admit.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 12 January 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

The GTA:SA final Officer Pulaski scene:

"Any last words?"
"Yeah, can I fuck your sister?"

Some of those Tony Hawk cutscenes really suck. The Rube Goldberg accident sequences are okay, but the "bad guy gets his just desserts" ones are horrible.

And Pac-Man & Ms Pac-Man meeting for the first time, great stuff.

Psychonauts had some really good ones, but the shitty bit was when it would switch from real game to movie, which looked far worse than the regular game.

How many cut-scenes (I'm looking at you, every Tomb Raider ever) have horribly mumbled dialogue (embarrassed voice actors?) so that not only do you have to sit thru 5 minutes of shitty plot, but you're not actually sure what just happened at the end of it?

Clothing the Gotterdammerung Doors (noodle vague), Friday, 12 January 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

I think what always gets me is the ott portentiousness of a lot of ones I've seen recently. Like all the voice actors are reading the lines through gritted teeth (which they may be, w/scripts as atrocious as that Tomb Raider Legend one).

There's actually one or two in Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness, which are like the perfect cutscenes - eg you get Lara up onto the roof of a building, she gets spotted by a police helicopter, she runs to the edge of the building, jumps across & grabs a drainpipe on the other side, which collapses, dropping her into a skip. No dialogue, and it looks great, the computer animation is really nice. I wish they were all like that one.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 12 January 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, the best ones are probably the ones in the original Doom series - script:

Blank brick wall
words appear:
"you have penetrated yourself to the corrupted heart of the rotting spaceport. Around you lie the hellspawn bodies of your slain demon enemies. With heart heavy, you know that you must strap on your weapons and march forward into the depths of hell...(etc)"

Well, of course there's the classic cutscene that is simultaneously the best AND the worst, from the first Resident Evil.

Don't. Open.

That door!!

I wonder how successful the Playstation(and consequently console RPGs) would have been w/out the rendered cutscenes of FFVII, which allowed the game to be advertised on TV, among other things.

I'm enjoying the cut scenes in Yakuza a lot at the moment, if only because Mark Hamill's in some of them and they all say fuck a lot.

Also search Dead Rising. Some of the animations and facial expressions make the voiceovers seem like the best game acting ever.

I don't know if it counts, but the first big dialoguey cutscene in Symphony of the Night is all-time.

Belmont: "You STEAL men's SOULS and make them your SLAVES!!"
Dracula: "Perhaps the same could be said of ALL religions!"
