By "online" I don't necessarily mean games that you play online with other people (although, I'm not ruling that out).
The best two free games available on these intarnets that I've found are:
Grid Wars 2 and Grow RPG. The former has staying power, while the latter just provides a really fun 30 minutes, or however long it takes you to beat it.

― Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 22 January 2007 10:35 (nineteen years ago)
Ah, cheers. Under hybrid setup your keyboard controls movement and the mouse controls shooting direction, a la Quake, etc.
Grid wars = too hectic for me.
I never survive longer than about ten minutes, which I see as an advantage. It's a proper game, but you only need ten minutes for it.

About a month ago, I used the Stumble Upon "online games" channel so often that I actually got a message telling me that I had viewed every single recommended Stumble link on the topic, and to chill out for a while. I haven't played a free online game since. Thanks for fucking up my self-esteem, Stumble Upon.

Cave Story Info Download with English Patch for Windows And then the Mac English patch is here http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b289/ilikehame/_111_cave_story_ss_01.gif
Knytt Stories Can be downloaded here Extra levels http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b289/ilikehame/knytt6.jpg

― pj, Sunday, 30 September 2007 04:57 (eighteen years ago)
Damn, I forgot all about Cave Story! I can really, really recommend that one. That one was obviously a labor of love for whoever developed it. It also has replay value because depending on the way you proceed, you can get different weapons and endings. A+ would play again etc.
Knytt Stories looks intriguing, I may check that out later today.
― Z S, Sunday, 30 September 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)
It took forever and never seemed to go anywhere. I stopped playing.
― kv_nol, Monday, 1 October 2007 11:58 (eighteen years ago)
The original Knytt is even more low-key than most of the Knytt Stories levels. I'd agree that they don't really 'go anywhere' -- the appeal is mostly in exploring the weird mysterious world and seeing the tiny little sprite animals hop around, which is compelling enough for me but I can see how it could seem boring.

brute-forced the endgame of 45x45, finished at 1980/1033 without a lot of joy. really SO close to being a really satisfying game!

popping in to say thank you for this thread. my strategy for not immediately reading the doom news in the morning is playing these kinds of games, and Clues by Sam and enclose.horse have been very helpful

not knowing the perfect score on enclose horse is an interesting dynamic which annoys me. have i done well? have i missed something? the value is, if you look, in the html source. as was tomorrow's puzzle, defined but not playable
― koogs, Wednesday, 28 January 2026 19:38 (one month ago)
yeah it could give you options to try again or to see the optimal solution.
― ledge, Thursday, 29 January 2026 09:03 (one month ago)
it does show you the optimal solution, but only after submitting (little link under the score)
― koogs, Thursday, 29 January 2026 11:12 (one month ago)

hallelujah just finished 45x45. 212 errors. Probably half of them happened in the final ~200 correct matches.
Final categories were numbers, fallacies, legal doctrines, and programming languages. Lots of brute force and looking shit up

enclose horse now tells you the perfect score before you commit. and now all the jeopardy is gone.
― koogs, Monday, 9 March 2026 14:18 (two weeks ago)
yeah I vastly preferred having to commit to an answer rather than being compelled to actually find the optimal. oh well
Catfishing.net is great though (some mild irritation with subject matter biases & repeated entries aside)
― obvious old hat (rob), Monday, 9 March 2026 14:36 (two weeks ago)
Agree enclose.horse is worse with check score feature. All the results are now compressed and it removes the satisfaction of getting a perfect score
― that's not my post, Monday, 9 March 2026 16:01 (two weeks ago)
you don't have to click on it!but yes i see what you mean about the spread
― Lavator Shemmelpennick, Monday, 9 March 2026 17:26 (two weeks ago)

― m0stly clean (Slowsquatch), Tuesday, 10 March 2026 08:58 (one week ago)
not sure if the "Updates" tab has always been there on enclose.horse but i noticed it today, and there is an accounting if that inconsistency, lol
Mar 11, 2026 NEWCommunity feedback: many players want the Check button back - deciding the best path forwardMar 10, 2026 NEWRemoved the Check button based on community feedbackMar 6, 2026 NEWAdded a Check button to see how close your score is to the optimal solution
