The whole concept is deadly to my credit card; I'm awful tempted to go on a mad buying spree and scoop up a half dozen games simply for nostalgia's sake. What's worth the money? What's not? What should I be excited about? What's not out yet that you think needs to be?

Those prices, though... yikes. Particularly the Turbo Grafx prices?! Why are those so expensive? I remember that system being not so shiny. 800 points for R-Type vs... 800 points for R-Type III. Wtf. Also, why don't they just rename "wii points" to "american pennies" so I can ever remember how much they're worth. Or, even better, divide everything by 25 because I can't imagine they stupid points ever getting more granular than a quarter. Also, Xbox points, why are they $1.25/100? Even MORE annoying.

do any of the old games use the wii controls in the new way? if you see what I'm saying.
failing that what are the best multiplayer ones, excluding bomberman.
― Ronan, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 10:16 (eighteen years ago)
As far as I know, none of the games use the wii remote at all. They won't even work with it. You have to have the classic controller (or a gamecube controller) plugged into the wii. None of the games (so far) have online multiplayer either - the games are just straight up emulations. The only things that have been changed are apparently some cheat codes & some sport games have had player's names removed (because of rights issues). Next year supposedly they are going to start offering orginal games, so maybe all that will change.
― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)
you can use the wii remote with nes games, and most sega games. but not in any new way, just turned on its side. they are refusing to do any updating of the roms, right down to not fixing nes slowdown/flickering issues. they've just started putting up japanese only releases on the euro vc, but haven't even translated them! apparently this is all for "authenticity". why they don't realise that people might be interested in online leaderboards etc is a bit of a mystery. (insert itprintsmoney.gif here, i guess)
― zappi, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)
they're going to see how lucrative the VC actually is before putting much money into it, I think. With the Mii Parade and Everybody Votes it's pretty clear they're interested in making it a social machine, but they also want to maintain strict control over interactions between players in order to preserve a nice E rating for the default online experience. Right now it's a question of whether they're looking at XBLA or deciding once again to eschew everything their competition is doing in order to forge their own crazy path.

How do you save your game in Donkey Kong Country? Is the save feature broken?
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 06:09 (eighteen years ago)
I never save anything for VC; I just hit the home button to freeze the game where I'm playing.
― forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)
I have a wavebird but I'm thinking of getting a classic controller. Is it any good?
― El Tomboto, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)
Before I picked up the classic controller I was using a gamecube one, which I absolutely hated (clunky purple monster), so it's a big improvement over that - it's slim, light, and not ugly. The only slight negative about it for me is that it only has a short cord that has to be plugged into the wii remote - so if you're going to use the classic controller, you kind of have to have the wii remote sitting in your lap...
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)
As to Donkey Kong Country saves - I found out last night - you just have to get pretty far into the game before reaching your first save point. Ridiculously far. It's a really punishing game! The (first?) mine section ate a ton of my lives last night - it's so fast and you have to be so perfect and remember so much (and do it pretty much just right each time). It was also frustrating after finally beating the mine level, you can't go back and save and you still have to move forward through at least one more level to reach the next save point - I'm not sure how many levels away it is since I didn't make it... and will have to repeat all that stuff next time... It's weirdly fun though.

Can't wait to get home tonight to download and play some Super Mario Bros 3!
Does anybody on here know anything about Alien Soldier?
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 5 November 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)
Anybody on here have anything to say about the new releases, Axelay and Blue's Journey?
I was playing a little two-player Gunstar Heroes this last weekend. Crazy game! I found it a bit tought to consistently aim at an angle - which was frustrating (like when you are sliding down a hill and have to shoot the other guys sliding down the hill at an angle). I thought playing it with two players would make it easier, but I actually found it more confusing - kept picking up and tossing the other guy by mistake.

Seriously, I've only bought 6 or 7 virtual console games so far (in what 8 or 9 months?), but I'm looking to try out more. I missed most of this stuff the first time around...

I heard that! I'm currently sitting on Endless Ocean, Mario Strikers, Call of Duty 3, Professor Layton... and i still need to finish zack and wiki and start rogue galaxy. And smash brothers is on the horizon. And I think i wanna buy a 360 already. It's sad.

i'm currently struggling through Zelda 2 for the first time. its too hard! Commodore 64 games are coming to Euro VC soon, and Mario Kart Wii is coming on April 11th in EU (we get a game first shock horror). oh and it looks like that headtracking thing is going to be used in the Speilberg game Boom Blox.
― zappi, Friday, 22 February 2008 01:57 (seventeen years ago)
Man I bought StarTropics when it came out and I've been stuck on the second boss for a fortnight. Shit is hard with no "save anywhere you want" option.
Kinda stalled on Zack and Wiki too at the mo.
― Noodle Vague, Friday, 22 February 2008 08:23 (seventeen years ago)
Six bucks isn't too unreasonable for Turbo Grafx games, considering what they go for on ebay, etc. Some of those games are definitely worth buying; Military Madness, Devil's Crush, Blazing Lazers (best shooter I've ever played), Bomberman, the Bonk games, Neutopia (it's a Zelda rip-off, but at least it's a good Zelda rip-off), and a few more are all great. It is stupid that they bumped R-Type up a couple dollars.
Anyway, I spent way too much on VC games the first eight months I had a Wii.
― Garrett Martin, Friday, 22 February 2008 14:23 (seventeen years ago)
I still own more virtual console games than wii games. I think it's a really great feature, that definitely makes picking up a wii seem more worth it. Sure I wish they were doing some of the updates and nice stuff that xbox does, like having leader boards for the old games and a more integrated/useful friends function, but at least they've released tons of good /interesting stuff. It would also be nice if they made the save feature on Mario Kart work.
I really enjoy turning on my system and seeing all those games in the menu that I've downloaded - there to play if I so desire. And there's always a lot more on a lazy Sunday that I'd download and check out if I had the spare time. But yeah, there are too many new games in interested in right now though, for the most part, to really play as many of the virtual console games as I'd like.
I think they've released over 200 already?
I enjoy the shooters the most - great to drop in and play a level or two between more serious things...

No More Heros. any good?
― carne asada, Thursday, 13 March 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)
No More Heroes is fun, but not on the VC.
StarTropics is, though, and I bought that thing last week. I like it a lot more than I did when I was 13. Gets hard quick, though.
I also grabbed Psicosis, a game I always wanted for the TurboGrafx, but never got. I thought the concept was awesome - a dude battling for his own sanity by blowing crazy psychedelic shit up inside his own mind? Exactly the sort of stuff that made StarTropics look boring and immature when I was 13. Unfortunately it's just another subpar rehash of Gradius with ugly (if colorful) graphics.
― Garrett Martin, Thursday, 13 March 2008 14:44 (seventeen years ago)
No More Heroes is fun, but not on the VC. half asleep here, didn’t even realize this was the VC thread but thanks

Like Super Mario World, it's easy, but also a lot of fun.

Ys I&II on Wii VC today. Looks like I'll be turning my Wii on for the first time in months.

abanana have you tried wii homebrew?
― cozwn, Monday, 25 August 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)
No. I thought there was a system update that bricked a lot of systems that used it?
― abanana, Monday, 25 August 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)
yeah I heard about that; apparently it's only those who have mod chips installed? rather than software exploits
either way, you could always delete the homebrew channel when you're expecting an update
it's pretty easy; and pretty good!!

Ys I&II is the reason I got a Genesis. I got the TurboGrafx CD for my birthday one year, specifically to play this game. Damn thing didn't work, though. This was in the weird downtime between the original free-standing TurboCD attachment and the relaunched TurboDuo; when I returned it to Babbage's they didn't have any replacements in stock, and weren't expecting any, since that unit had been discontinued. So I just exchanged it for a Genesis and Phantasy Star II, and have still never played Ys. I'll probably rectify that tonight.
― Garrett Martin, Monday, 25 August 2008 17:04 (seventeen years ago)
New firmware apparently finally allows you to save virtual console/wiiware games directly to your SD card and more importantly, launch directly from the SD card.
