So here's my proposition: I'd like to start an ILX board for those interested in participating in a gaming club, a'la Vintage Game Club... basically a game nerd version of a book club; a place where ILXors can play a game on their own as part of a collective while taking notes and looking for points of interest... then sitting down to discuss nuances, plot, trivia, preferences, hidden points of interest, etc. on board.
Five or ten people (or more!) simultaneously playing/replaying through classic or recent games on a timeline ("everybody get to level six by wednesday and meet back here to talk about it")sounds like a good time to me and quite a lot of you folks seem the type to be nutty enough to wanna join in!
I don't think this can/should fit on ILG; it needs some room to stretch out onto multiple threads to discuss music/gameplay/control issues/storyline/fave quotes/etc that would get clogged on a single thread. My thought was that it'd prolly be best as an invite only board to keep the signal to noise ratio well balanced and avoid trolling and general ass-flashing, but it's invite only in the same way Curtis Borad is; the walls are up to keep you in, not out.
Anyways, Tombot seemed open to trying this little skinner box on for size, so he got-r-done and we're a go to actually do this!
The first game we'll be playing is the newly-free-on-gametap classic Fallout 1, so if you have a PC or a Mac (which seems like a safe bet) you can join regardless of your current console generation ownership level. Future games will run the gamut; I'd like to try drastically different genres and give folks an excuse to try on something they've never done: a JRPG or a shooter or a FPS or a text adventure or a SCUMM system or Peggle etc. etc.
The upshot is that if you'd like to take part in The Players Club, all you need to do is post your name on this thread saying so and we'll invite you in. I'd love to have a mix of people who've never played the game (and that includes me for the first one), people who played the Gzeus Chrono Trigger out of it and some "I think I played it in 97?" types too. Gamers from all countries are welcome. More details and rules and scheduling and other nonsense will be posted on the new board once we wrangle up the initial guild o' folks.
So who's in?
― forksclovetofu, Friday, 26 September 2008 04:41 (seventeen years ago)
I would do this maybe, but I can only do 360 and PC games that don't require fancy systems.
― polyphonic, Friday, 26 September 2008 05:37 (seventeen years ago)
I'm down. I've actually got Fallout 1 on the Mac, but otherwise games will have to either be Mac available or emulatable (or on the 360) for me to play along. But yeah, this sounds cool. Count me in.
― Mordy, Friday, 26 September 2008 05:42 (seventeen years ago)
Oh, and I've basically Gzeus Chrono Trigger'd Fallout. But I love the game. I could play it again.
― Mordy, Friday, 26 September 2008 05:43 (seventeen years ago)
i was totally into this, but if you go to gametap, fallout is not available for the mac os. :(
― SHOT INTO A FAN LIKE A CHRIS ROCK ROBOT (John Justen), Friday, 26 September 2008 06:54 (seventeen years ago)
I want to be in on this, I like the sound of playing the shit out of an old game I've never played before. And I've only played Fallout very briefly before it crashed, that might have been Fallout 2 tho.
― Ste, Friday, 26 September 2008 08:46 (seventeen years ago)
I'll join in
― ‽, Friday, 26 September 2008 09:04 (seventeen years ago)
Sure, I'm up for it.
― Nhex, Friday, 26 September 2008 10:25 (seventeen years ago)
Lurkers, non-gametap folks (there are other ways to play of course), people who only have PC's or Macs etc are all welcome; nobody's getting graded on this. It's for fun!
I'm glad there's some interest; let me write an intro thread and a few starting study questions and I'll send out invites shortly.
Mordy, can you contact me off thread? If you've really Gzeus'd this game, I might want you to lead the conversation.
― forksclovetofu, Friday, 26 September 2008 14:58 (seventeen years ago)
Incidentally, I'll need your email to invite you to the board, so if it's not listed on your profile, ilx mail it to me off thread and I'll put you on.
― forksclovetofu, Friday, 26 September 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)
I love this idea!
― THERE IS NO VULCAN DEATH GRIP (Will M.), Friday, 26 September 2008 15:35 (seventeen years ago)
For my actual login email though take the +ilx off of my email address that's in my profile.
― THERE IS NO VULCAN DEATH GRIP (Will M.), Friday, 26 September 2008 15:36 (seventeen years ago)
mine is in my profile
― Ste, Friday, 26 September 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)
Not exactly sure why you all feel like you need a private board for this. It's not like there's so much traffic in I Love Games that a monthly thread full of interesting discourse on just one game would get lost
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 26 September 2008 17:04 (seventeen years ago)
any solution to how to get this for OS X?
― Peter Cetera (Euler), Friday, 26 September 2008 17:05 (seventeen years ago)
Jeff: I'd like to make this more of a community than what ILG currently is and also stave off non-game woolgathering. The aim is to do 12 games a year. More discussion on this point will be made there.
Euler: I'll do some legwork and post some likely places to obtain Mac/PC versions on the board.
I'll send out invites by the weekend once I get a few posts/infrastructure built on the new board.
― forksclovetofu, Friday, 26 September 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)
ok thanks!
― Peter Cetera (Euler), Friday, 26 September 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)
thx on the osx quest dude. ill do some poking around tonight myself and see if i can turn anything up.
― SHOT INTO A FAN LIKE A CHRIS ROCK ROBOT (John Justen), Friday, 26 September 2008 19:39 (seventeen years ago)
lol fallout 1 for mac is going for $80 on amazon used wtf
― El Tomboto, Friday, 26 September 2008 21:33 (seventeen years ago)
There are ways to get pirated versions, but I'm not sure whether it's appropriate to post those on ILX. So let's just say that some of the private torrent communities have OSx versions.
― Mordy, Friday, 26 September 2008 22:47 (seventeen years ago)
I think the general agreement is that we cannot use ILX to exchange pirated versions, as that is WRONG and also might cause some damage to our lovely host.I think posting links to places where such material might exist (rather than a direct link to said file), especially in cutthroat cases like mac fallout, is okay...? Tom?
― forksclovetofu, Friday, 26 September 2008 22:54 (seventeen years ago)
In any case, one is compelled to point out that typing "fallout mac" (not in quotes)into google gives you a few immediate download options on the first page, so it's not really that difficult to find.
― forksclovetofu, Friday, 26 September 2008 23:16 (seventeen years ago)
Btw, forks, I messaged you my email addy.
― Mordy, Friday, 26 September 2008 23:17 (seventeen years ago)
dude anybody who can't google their way to mininova or whatever does not deserve an invite. nuff said.
― El Tomboto, Friday, 26 September 2008 23:21 (seventeen years ago)
xpost, not reading today.
― El Tomboto, Friday, 26 September 2008 23:22 (seventeen years ago)
if you can offer a few more tips on how to find it for os x, that would be great; I don't know how to get torrents, is that the only way?
― Peter Cetera (Euler), Saturday, 27 September 2008 00:47 (seventeen years ago)
Weird, I downloaded fallout 1 myself just the other day, and I've been getting around to starting it. So yeah, I guess I'd be up for this. Except that I agree with Jeff, I think it'd fit fine on ILG, and I'm very much down on the whole secret board idea in general, so I'm not sure I'd want to join one really.
― JimD, Saturday, 27 September 2008 00:54 (seventeen years ago)
i'd kind of like to look in on this w/o really joining... i think you should keep it here, personally. plus being googled only helps this kind of thing.
― s1ocki, Saturday, 27 September 2008 02:40 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah I don't see why we don't keep it here.
― polyphonic, Saturday, 27 September 2008 02:45 (seventeen years ago)
I'm in, i guess, as long as it doesn't cut into my Classic Doctor viewings
― Office Cat is Eating the Monitor Again (kingfish), Saturday, 27 September 2008 04:53 (seventeen years ago)
forks: I sent you a webmail with my address.
Euler: I hear Fallout for Windows works with Wine/Darwine emulation in Mac OS X. When we start this thing officially, I'll give it a shot, since I still have my old Windows CD-ROM. If it works out, you can buy it DRM-free from GOG.com for $6. (I actually just nabbed Fallout Tactics from there) There's also some unofficial patches out there fixing old bugs.
I agree that this board's low-traffic enough to work for this, but I'm amenable however you want to do it.
― Nhex, Saturday, 27 September 2008 06:17 (seventeen years ago)
Add me to the VIP ILG please!
Although, as others have said it, if you decide to keep it on ILG, I'm cool with that too.
Funny, I just started Fallout 2 for the first time, just the other day. I haven't played the first one either though, so I don't mind switching over.

I got Fallout 1 off of Gametap but I don't know if I'll be able to give it a good play so thank you thread for telling me how to get Fallout for free but I'm not in for the club.
― jim, Sunday, 28 September 2008 17:01 (seventeen years ago)
Okay, it's up and running! Took awhile because I was playing Bioshock all day...
If you haven't received an email (or would like to join in midway or for future games), please ILXmail me and I'll add you to the board list.
I've spent quite some time crafting an environment for us to talk about the game in; hopefully it'll prove to be time well spent and not me being OCD again. Just click the posts
Hope to see you there.
