I figured somebody oughta do it...

let's hear more impressions of the beta!!

s1ocki, Saturday, 11 October 2008 18:42 (seventeen years ago)

don't get me wrong, I'll probably buy this but I really wish they'd kept the modern setting - it would have at least forced treyarch to have some ingenuity and new ideas for perks, weapons, challenges, camo, gun attachments, and maps

as it stands you get a lot of re-skinned perks from cod4, a lot of guns which feel very similar (not to mention we've already had a good shot at them in cod2/3), re-skinned red-dot sights/ACOGS/UAV/air strikes, repeat game modes and only a few new ones

how lazy

STINKING CORPSE (cozwn), Sunday, 12 October 2008 01:26 (seventeen years ago)

there are tanks

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 12 October 2008 01:32 (seventeen years ago)

I was wondering if the next game will be the one called Call of Duty 5, or also just have its own title like this one?

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 12 October 2008 01:33 (seventeen years ago)

The maps feel pretty different to me. I do miss the color a bit here - everything is too brown grey and sometimes it's harder than it should be to see people. I remember lots of green in 3. Speaking of green, using tall grass as an impassable wall has to leave multiplayer map design - it just feels so clunky (especially after recently playing through Crysis Warhead).

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 12 October 2008 01:39 (seventeen years ago)

I really like the japanese map in this one; the pinks are beautiful

doesn't seem to be many camping spots; but it's hard to tell w/out UAV jammer perk and w/kill-cams on

STINKING CORPSE (cozwn), Sunday, 12 October 2008 01:43 (seventeen years ago)

well, I played a game of 5v5 war against three guys with a TREY clan tag. You know what that means. Yup, I got killed 17 times and only got 2 kills :(

It was one of those annoying games where as soon as I would spawn, somebody would shoot me in the back, or I'd walk three feet and get shot in back, or turn a corner and get shot in the head. Pretty frustrating stuff.

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 12 October 2008 03:22 (seventeen years ago)

I have a spare beta key if anyone's looking for one. e-mail me at d.w.howie at gmail.com

95% now

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Monday, 13 October 2008 20:23 (seventeen years ago)

I like the idea of the mode War. But playing with idiots who don't attempt to cap flags, or even worse, idiots that do go with you as if they're trying to cap flags but don't stand near enough to assist in the capping so they can hide in a corner and pick-off advancing enemies after they've killed you is incredibly annoying!

jim, Monday, 13 October 2008 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

This is basically just a WWII mod of COD4, not sure if that's a bad thing or if I'm content with that (I suspect the latter).

jim, Monday, 13 October 2008 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

ach, my internet is being guff. Was basically unplayable there and was getting my ass handed to me. No bullet reg at all.

jim, Monday, 13 October 2008 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

don't think those last dudes there were happy w/my cheating : /

oh well

STINKING CORPSE (cozwn), Monday, 13 October 2008 21:58 (seventeen years ago)

ha.

Turns out I've exceeded download limit with my lame ISP (Sky) by downloading about 24 gb in the last 24 hours. Now even browsing the internet is going slow as sin.

jim, Monday, 13 October 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

xp They were all lining up to file complaints on you. I mocked them for doing this.

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Monday, 13 October 2008 22:49 (seventeen years ago)

16 kill streak. Yas.

jim, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

And I had ran out of all ammo and didn't actually die to end the streak, round ended.

jim, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 18:22 (seventeen years ago)

and you did it all with your bare hands.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 18:58 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, being a bit overexcited then, but I haven't played COD for ages now and I've been so rusty that I've been pretty much getting my ass handed to me repeatedly. Starting to get a bit of the old magic back and it feels good.

jim, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

cozen - what the fuck! 24 kill streak!!! That's some absurd stuff, considering how big and open the beta maps are.

I haven't played a ton (a few hours maybe, just up to level 11) and am not too into it. It feels kind of average to me, or maybe I just don't like playing these kinds of games on the 360? Or maybe I just haven't had any really good games and am feeling a little frustrated? I did just throw a molotov coktail in a guys face though (which was fun).

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 03:53 (seventeen years ago)

I am fkn ninja!*

*in all honesty, I was probably cheating; there's a pretty game-breaking glitch on roundhouse that lets you go under the map and kill dudes with impunity

I reckon I could do a 24 kill streak; tho, wonder wht my top streak in cod4 is... ? probably abt 20 tbh

sarah palin isn't post-modern, she's dumb (cozwn), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 04:01 (seventeen years ago)

you were 19-1 or thereabouts on the last map I played last night.

what U cry 4 (jim), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 10:36 (seventeen years ago)

I really like the tank sticky-grenade thing, but I miss mines.

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

Ah - I'm getting more into this now. Finally had some decent games tonight... running closer to even on the k/d, though on my final game I managed 24 kills to 10 deaths, finally winning my first solo deathmatch too. I still haven't managed to put together a kill streak longer than 5 though, which is frustrating, as I'm dying to release the hounds.

I see they've added more ranks and perks, up to level 24 and three hardcore game types - though I didn't try 'em, was just playing some quick free-for-all.

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 19 October 2008 06:00 (seventeen years ago)

Whenever I release the dogs or get artillery I hardly kill anyone. Once I got 3 kills from the dogs but apart from that nowt.

what U cry 4 (jim), Sunday, 19 October 2008 18:24 (seventeen years ago)

whoa, you can sic dogs on people? That is bad-ass.

polyphonic, Sunday, 19 October 2008 19:12 (seventeen years ago)

If you get 7 kills in a row you get to unleash dogs yeah.

I just played this for the first time since Friday and there is now hardcore mode and you can go up higher than level 11! Yay!

what U cry 4 (jim), Monday, 20 October 2008 20:20 (seventeen years ago)

Or what Jeff said, I just must have not read that yesterday :S

what U cry 4 (jim), Monday, 20 October 2008 20:20 (seventeen years ago)

news flash: I am still fucking awful at these games.

i'm skipping this COD for two reasons

1) i am kinda not super interested
2) my roommate keeps fucknig trying ot get me to buy it because ALL HE FUCKING DOES is play cod4 on my fucking 360 even after i moved my tv and my xbox into my fucking bedroom and he doesn't even asked, i'm not encouraging that shit. i might fucknig start hiding the controller, seriously FUCK and he keeps DRINKING MY JUICE AND USING MY SHOWER GEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone is a Jedi (Will M.), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

The reviews are coming out, and it looks like it's being rated pretty solid. Playing co-op through the campaign, plus the zombie thing could end up being fun.

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago)

I bought it. It's fun! We'll see what happens.

btw there is a package deal where you pay more money and get a code that unlocks all the guns, possibly other things. I don't know if it's a US-only promotion or what, but f a bunch of that.

Your original display name will be displayed in brackets. (dan m), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 02:24 (seventeen years ago)

Glad I gave in and picked this up so far. I didn't realize how awesomely satisfying it would be to be able to release the hounds and sort of see the whole map fall into choas. It's probably over-powered, but if you're the person who has released the attack, it's a lot more fun than sending up a helicopter in 4.

Have only played multiplayer. It's a semi-shame you can't play anything other than deathmatches until you hit level 14.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

^that was the same for cod4, I think, at least on the first run-through, levelling up unlocked playlists (which you were able to keep, thank god, if you chose to prestige)

I will probably buckle and buy this after all, most ppl will surely migrate off cod4 now, unless they seed new maps

how are the new non-beta multiplayer maps btw?

conzeny (cozwn), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

how are the new non-beta multiplayer maps btw?

Pretty good, though the learning curve is there. There's one really good one that's in a (bombed-out, of course) hospital/insane asylum.

It's totally obvious who had the beta and who didn't, as on the beta maps there are like 2-3 people with 30+ kills and no one else gets more than 5.

Your original display name will be displayed in brackets. (dan m), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 17:35 (seventeen years ago)

I've yet to land on too many of the new maps, maybe just 3 or 4 that weren't in the beta. It's a bit hard to tell them apart yet as they all look kind of the same, with that very monochrome, dusty, washed out look. In general, they seem to play well, have diverse height options, choke points and more open areas, so a fair bit of variety, a fair amount to figure out. Definitely looking forward to getting to try some of the non-deathmatch gametypes.

I think a lot of people will pick this up. It was flying of the shelves at the shop I was at last night and there were already 40,000 people playing online when I was on late-ish last night (ps3 version), so not hard to find a game, but I do think ultimately a lot of people will switch back to 4 or whatever game comes out next. Not sure it will have that kind of long term huge player base of 4, as I did hear some people complaining that it's too hard & weapons aren't as fun as the modern weapons. So yeah WWII era is maybe a little less mass market friendly compared to the modern war thing (plus people who want/need their red dots instead of just iron sights).

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 17:43 (seventeen years ago)

ok, I buckled, mainly because I was able to pick it up cheap; it is actually... a lot of fun, the non-beta maps are on the most part expansive (there's one massive one) and varied (even tho I agree with jeff that they do all look similar); you get a whole bunch of game for your money as well: the singleplayer, co-op, competitive co-op, MP, and nazi zombies and each has their own challenges and rewards... pretty decent so far; first 18 levels were a real slog (having to play softcore suxxxx) but I have hardcore now so I'm fairly happy; don't think I'll prestige at all this time around, it seems so much harder to level up (both yr character and yr guns) this time for some reason... the double-barrelled shotgun is sweet

have to say the nazi zombies mode is pretty good (even if it is a little 'off', taste-wise); it doesn't have the intelligence tht left4dead has but I kinda prefer slow-moving zombies over fast (unimpeachable dread Vs relentless fear innit)

fuzzy dunlop (cozwn), Friday, 14 November 2008 21:59 (seventeen years ago)

what I played of the campaign was actually pretty good too; the complaint tht the MP was just a re-skinned cod4 probably holds for that as well but then cod4 was one of the best SP and MP games of the last few years so it's an amazing formula; they've gone all-out to ape cod4's cinematics and set-pieces

fuzzy dunlop (cozwn), Friday, 14 November 2008 22:01 (seventeen years ago)

lol I was just coming here to post that after playing this a bit more, I really think there's been some convergence towards the "ideal" of cod4... not as big a difference as between 2 and 3 or 3 and 4.

Your original display name will be displayed in brackets. (dan m), Friday, 14 November 2008 23:36 (seventeen years ago)

You have to beat the single player campaign to unlock the nazi zombie mode, right?

Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 15 November 2008 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

Anybody else doing the single player campaign? I'm semi-shocked with how brutal its been. It's really bringing home the horror, more so than other war games I can recall. Particularly the way people writhe when being burned alive, and some of the the effects of grenades, people's legs being blown off and the like (in multi too, I guess). At times I've been made a bit queasy - it's probably better like that, but still... it's harsh shit.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 17 November 2008 21:25 (seventeen years ago)

images of real executions in the intro video too... ngggh

fuzzy dunlop (cozwn), Monday, 17 November 2008 21:53 (seventeen years ago)

dude in the game I'm playing in is a level 40, second prestige

already? jeez!

fuzzy dunlop (cozwn), Monday, 17 November 2008 21:55 (seventeen years ago)

oh; he's 25th in the world, wtf

fuzzy dunlop (cozwn), Monday, 17 November 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah I started seeing my first prestige-d players yesterday. Some had already played for more than a day total, and the game hasn't been out a week yet. Ah, college.

I'm just happy I unlocked mines again. And I'm loving hardcore free for all.

Finished the single player mode last night. I thought it started out good, and was semi-enjoying it, but I feel like the levels toward the end reverted back to the endless bullshit waves of enemies and objectives that become way too much of a grind, too much of an attempt to up the challenge by making you wade through an almost impossible wave of bullets and grenades and trigger points, that ended up really souring my impressions of the solo game. It's just no fun when you have to fight your way through the same twenty feet of game thirty or more times in a row! I probably woulda given up, but I wanted to unlock zombie mode, which yeah, is sort of tasteless. After an ridiculously long credit roll that ends with thanking the veterans who helped them on the game and a note honoring their sacrifice, "Semper Fi," the screen fades to black, then loads a cheesy looking bold horror movie font that screams "Nazi Zombies."

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Tuesday, 18 November 2008 16:56 (seventeen years ago)

ooh - competitve co-op is where it's at. Finally tried it out and it's super fun. Play through a mission with 2-4 other people for score. The points you earn seem to go towards your multiplayer rank too. Will be playing this mode a lot more, I think.

They sure pack a lot of value into this game. A decent single player campaign that you can also play through in standard co-op or competitve, the zombie mode, plus all the regular multiplayer stuff, which is pretty close to being as good as CoD 4's multiplayer, which is probably the best console multiplayer mode so far.

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 21 November 2008 06:43 (seventeen years ago)

five years pass...

thought this wasn't worth starting a new thread for but is anyone playing the new COD, Advanced Warfare? I picked it up yesterday and am really pleased with the way a couple changes have freshened up the gameplay. Also I would like a moderate, reserved venue to discourse politely about loadout picks.

antexit, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 15:49 (eleven years ago)

is there a nuketown map??

adam, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 15:53 (eleven years ago)

not as such but there are some very tight maps with two control points that play a lot like Nuketown. The action in this game is a lot more vertical, one of the things that's cool about it, so you don't see a lot of big horizontal plains with a couple of fortified, wide-view sniping/camping points like in the other games. In general sniping/camping seems to be discouraged by the level design. You very rarely see long unobstructed sightlines, and when you do there's rarely a shooting position that isn't very obviously vulnerable. There's this double-jump/boost/butt stomp move, along with a tech that speeds movement for a short time, that make you able to cover a lot of ground very quickly—it's much easier to rush a camper than before. I'm sure ppl will find camping points but the game seems designed to discourage that kind of play.

antexit, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 16:12 (eleven years ago)

that sounds pretty interesting--does it preserve that lizard brain call of duty feedback loop? that is to say, is there a sick guitar riff on leveling?

sadly my current gaming setup is PC-as-tv-with-a-controller so i would get my ass handed to me even more than usual by the keyboard and mouse crew

adam, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 16:41 (eleven years ago)

certainly the feedback loop is more pervasive than ever-- a constant stream of medals/xp particularized to a million different special ways to get kills. You can see this in the online MP videos.

ALSO and this is THE WORST-- based on level performance you can get awarded, mid-level, "supply drops", i.e. packages of loot containing single-use stat boosters, killstreak rewards, and unique weapons that stay in your inventory. So basically now you can luck into randomized legendary weapons like in an RPG. (They're actually regular weapons but with special skins, modifications and with rerolls on their stats, so you get a sniper rifle with the mobility/handling of an SMG, etc.)

antexit, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 17:57 (eleven years ago)

ok got the xbone set up and drunkenly bought this after a grifters show last night, call of duty is fun--what are you playing on?

adam, Saturday, 8 November 2014 18:07 (eleven years ago)

I'm on PS4 :(

fun though right?
