Wow, Zeilard! I remember always seeing that box at Egghead (or Games N Gadgets or Software Etc. or CompUSA or whatever other sad, defunct chain of the olden days) with its swarthy sword-swinging warrior looking every bit like a game I would be into, and then the screens of the game itself looked like an ugly, cramped, pixellated drag. I loved the chaotic-shelf video game rental experience, especially given that the huge number of NES titles meant that going with your friend to the place their Mom usually took them meant an entirely new, weird selection of games. No rhyme or reason - seemingly high-profile things would be quite scarce. I remember the only time I played TMNT: Manhattan Project, it was rented from a Stein-Mart at a mall I never otherwise frequented.

flipside of the rental experience is, obviously, bringing home impenetrable impossible crap where you couldn't get past the first level and it suuuuuuucked.
