do they have some small seriously dedicated fanbase or something? the official ps3 blog is always mentioning the new one and it gets a lot of sort of ambient publicity but nobody seems excited about it and the release this week had exactly 0 fanfare. is this supposed to be a big ps3 title? does anybody care?

I've never played them, but they definitely have a dedicated fanbase. Not even that small! Probably because I think it was the only real online/bundled-headset/FPS gaming that existed for the ol' PS2.

I watched the new one being played for a while at this year's San Diego Comic Con, and I thought it looked pretty good. I'm sort of interested in it, but there are some problems. Most importantly, while it does look good, it also looks like a lot of other games I already have sitting on my shelf. Why buy a new forty dollar online only multiplayer, when I could just pull out Call of Duty 4 (for those modern weapons), or Rainbow 6 (for the more tactical gameplay), or MGO (which I've only played once! and looks like almost the same kind of thing + a sense of humor). The second problem is, there's too many other games coming out right now, with FIFA 09, Little Big Planet, Far Cry 2 (possibly), and Fallout 3 all hitting in the same three weeks, who has the time, who has the money? Finally, for whatever weird reason, a lot of the mutiplayer stuff on the ps3 tends to be kind of broken and clunky (not very thought out in terms of interface). I did not have a good experience with Warhawk (for example). I'm still frustrated one can't easily invite friends into a race in Wipeout HD. That makes me wary. Also the lack of reviews, though I hear that's because they didn't send out copies to sites until the game hit retail. We will see what happens when those reviews (maybe) start coming out. A price cut would probably help too.

ya, i was wondering about the lack of reviews... seems like they did a lot of building up and let the launch fizzle

Sounds like a real mess! Reviewer seems to have faith that they'll fix the problems. Me, not so sure.

I'm thinking about picking it up after the next title update comes out (which should be soon), but I'm still kind of undecided
