which games have the best and worst game engines?
worst: falloutbest: GTAIV, CoD4
engines definitely get better as times go on I think; I don't mind graphics if the game has a solid engine

exception that proves the rule*: saints row 2
terrible engine, great game
*I have never really understood this phrase

I can't stand the Sega Rally game engine, any game which has too much collision restriction is just shameful especially when there's not exactly heaps of extra gameplay to compensate.

xpost - if you can only think of a single exception, then that shows that the rule is generally true

ah, thanks; I'm sure there're many exceptions, just being flip innit
― coznebb (cozwn), Monday, 27 October 2008 15:36 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, there are probably a bunch more so in this instance it doesn't really hold, but that's what the phrase means.

GRID, has a flipping amazing game engine througout.

xp: actual meaning: the (stated) exception that proves (the existence of) the (unwritten) rule, e.g. 'entry is free of charge on Sundays' implies entry is usually charged for.

The Pure engine is amazing.

'Exceptio probat regulam in casibus non exceptis' = 'exception confirms the rule in the cases not excepted', early 17thC English law. xp again, end derail.

in fact, I reckon that's why the game Pure has such a crappy name: b/c the real reason for writing the game was to write the engine, which other games could use. "The Pure engine" sounds great.

i really want them to recreate Vice City with the new IV engine, i'm quietly confident this will be the next venture.
