I voted Monkey Island, irrespective of the fact that I've spent far the largest amount of time playing Minesweeper.

Have Your Sega (Noodle Vague), Friday, 7 November 2008 12:43 (seventeen years ago)

I was not allowed video games in 1990 :(

GO BLACK DUDE FROM SPACE ♡♥♡♥♡♥♡♥♡♥♡ (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 7 November 2008 12:45 (seventeen years ago)

Games I didn't include because I didn't think anyone would vote for them:
Adventures of Lolo 3 (one of my favorites, but even I wouldn't vote for it)
Operation Stealth
Overlord
Quest for Glory II: Trial by Fire
Snake's Revenge
Star Control

abanana, Friday, 7 November 2008 12:45 (seventeen years ago)

Thought there were a bunch of Star Control boosters on ILG?

I'm guessing SMW will win it at a walk, and I can see why, but Monkey Island has got more emotional resonance for me.

Have Your Sega (Noodle Vague), Friday, 7 November 2008 12:47 (seventeen years ago)

Star Control!

badg, Friday, 7 November 2008 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

What exactly is the distinction between the Super Mario Brothers and Super Mario World games?

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 7 November 2008 13:55 (seventeen years ago)

Super Mario World was also called Super Mario Bros. 4 in Japan. So, not much.

abanana, Friday, 7 November 2008 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

I loved Quest for Glory II, but I wouldn't have voted for it. The original Star Control isn't nearly as good as the sequel.

I can't believe Loom and Monkey Island actually came out the same year! I guess I'll have to go with Guybrush, despite stiff competition from Mega Man 3 and SMW.

Nhex, Friday, 7 November 2008 21:06 (seventeen years ago)

I was not allowed video games in 1990 :(

when DID australia get video games?? like, 1995? :D

I'm guessing SMW will win it at a walk, and I can see why, but Monkey Island has got more emotional resonance for me

i always thought that smw, while a lot of fun, is just too easy. there are some good non-game reasons to vote for it as well but i'm not even really tempted. i voted for monkey island as well but was really tempted to throw a vote to actraiser or even railroad tycoon since i doubt anyone else will.

z z. st. z z. uv (Lamp), Saturday, 8 November 2008 08:04 (seventeen years ago)

So much good stuff. Monkey Island, Loom, Actraiser (!), Spellcasting 101 (!!), SMW! I went with Monkey Island, just because it's the most enduring of the bunch, but I was very tempted to give a pity point to Loom + Spellcasting 101. Both of which would shine by any adventure game comparison that wasn't Monkey Island.

Mordy, Saturday, 8 November 2008 08:23 (seventeen years ago)

It's between Monkey Island and Railroad Tycoon for me (I've loved SMW since, but I didn't actually play it in 1990, so it doesn't feel like a 1990 game to me). I've gone for RT, because I must've played it pretty solidly for about 8 months. And also yeah, because I don't expect anyone else will vote for it.

Wing Commander, Star Control, and Ultima VI suffer by comparison to their immediate successors, and SMW and King's Quest V by comparison to their immediate predecessors. So, Monkey Island. This might be a landslide.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 8 November 2008 22:39 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, put "Mega Man 3" on the "immediate predecessors" list. I think I said something similar when we were talking about the year that had Mega Man I in it. It's kind of funny that every year is full of substandard sequels or prequels to things - eventually we're going to hit a poll where every single game is a stone-cold classic, right?

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 8 November 2008 22:39 (seventeen years ago)

my top 5, for what it's worth:
1. Super Mario World
2. The Secret of Monkey Island
3. StarTropics
4. Mega Man 3 (probably my second favorite MM, after 9(!))
5. Loom (I never beat this! I should play it again.)

abanana, Sunday, 9 November 2008 00:17 (seventeen years ago)

abanana, you definitely should. It's about a 3 hour game (when you're an adult - when I played it as a kid, I swear it took a week).

Mordy, Sunday, 9 November 2008 08:28 (seventeen years ago)

I prefer Mega Man 3 to the second game, but admittedly it's largely out of personal nostalgia than thoughtful reflection. But I remember them being pretty close in quality... weren't they? Or was 2 significantly better? (They're both massive improvements over part 1, and most of the other MM games, in any case)

Nhex, Sunday, 9 November 2008 13:31 (seventeen years ago)

Loom
Minesweeper
Monkey Island

Gravel Puzzleworth, Sunday, 9 November 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

never forget

"Tubular" level on Super Mario World

c˚zwn (cozwn), Sunday, 9 November 2008 17:58 (seventeen years ago)

this is the "real talk, content brought" way to beat it; none of that using yoshi shit; gives me palpatations just watching this

c˚zwn (cozwn), Sunday, 9 November 2008 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

None of these are what I was really playing at the time---immense amounts of Earl Weaver Baseball and Chuck Yeager's Advanced Flight Trainer. So I voted for Minesweeper. I would have voted for Star Con if it had been on there, or maybe one of the Mega Mans or Final Fantasy on my NES.

at once ultrahip and painfully earnest (Euler), Sunday, 9 November 2008 18:12 (seventeen years ago)

Pilotwings gets no love but I played the hell out of it back in the day.

parachutin'>plane>half-assed helicopter military strike endings>rocketeerin'>>>>>>>>>hang gliding

z "R" s (Z S), Sunday, 9 November 2008 18:18 (seventeen years ago)

i played the hell out of pilotwings too but come on let's be realistic. no one should actually vote for it.

also: tubular, not actually that hard.

z z. st. z z. uv (Lamp), Sunday, 9 November 2008 18:56 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, what I was actually playing at the time = FF1, DUCK TALES for NES (still mad this didn't make the top 100 on ILX), bunch of other stuff I can't think of...

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 9 November 2008 19:01 (seventeen years ago)

i think everything i was playing was covered in the 1987 poll although i guess i would've been playing startropics.

z z. st. z z. uv (Lamp), Sunday, 9 November 2008 19:06 (seventeen years ago)

SMW is really best, but calling it a "1990 video game" because it was released on Super Famicon in Japan or whatever is like complaining that a hit single was technically an MP3 a year before and shouldn't be in pazz and jop

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 9 November 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

I never completed tubular, lamp : //////

c˚zwn (cozwn), Sunday, 9 November 2008 19:20 (seventeen years ago)

which is obv more testament to my general lameitude than its difficulty, I admit

c˚zwn (cozwn), Sunday, 9 November 2008 19:35 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

I should have included Dragon Quest IV in this poll.

abanana, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 15:12 (seventeen years ago)

i spent lots of childhood on:

super mario world
tmnt: the arcade game
wing commander
mega man 3

but waaay more on dr. mario. even now, if i haven't played video games for six months and want to unwind for 10 minutes, i'll probably play dr. mario.

Jordan, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

I voted Dr. Mario as well. I'm always surprised when people say they don't absolutely love it. 2-player is fucking INTENSE.

z "R" s (Z S), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Zero votes for Megaman 3. 3 was always my favorite in the series. I'm surprised! I've never really been a fan of the adventure game genre, but 5 SMW votes to 13 for Secret of Monkey Island is a little o_0

z "R" s (Z S), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

Arguably greatest game of the LucasArts adventure era (maybe only comparable to Grim Fandango) versus mediocre edition in Mario franchise. No contest.

Mordy, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 00:17 (seventeen years ago)

I won't contest that it was arguably the greatest LucasArts adventure game, although as I mentioned, that means as much to me as being the best tasting combination of mud plus a fruit. But to call SMW "mediocre" is just WRONG!

z "R" s (Z S), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 00:30 (seventeen years ago)

For me, Mario 1, 2, 3, World, and 64 are all indisputably classic.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 00:34 (seventeen years ago)

As fun as it was at the time, I can't think of a single Mario game (except for 2) that I'd less like to play right now.

Mordy, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 00:39 (seventeen years ago)

Have fun playing Mario Sunshine without me!

polyphonic, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 00:40 (seventeen years ago)

I blocked out all memories of Gamecube games.

Mordy, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 00:45 (seventeen years ago)

i'm surprised you don't like adventure games, Z S!

z z. st. z z. uv (Lamp), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 00:49 (seventeen years ago)

also: SMW is superfun but mordy's right it's not a patch on any of the other mario games.
would like to see a 1997 a poll actually

z z. st. z z. uv (Lamp), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 00:50 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah...I wish I did like them more! Most of my videogame loving friends adore adventure games. My problem with them is that 1)I lack the patience for them nowadays, especially the ones that involve clicking on pixels or trying every item in your inventory on every object you can find, without logic, and 2)I don't find the plots and dialogue to be as engrossing as others do, I suppose. I know Monkey Island games are supposed to be hilarious, but they elicit very few LOL's from me, for whatever reason.

z "R" s (Z S), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 00:54 (seventeen years ago)

My name is Guybrush Threepwood, and I want to be a pirate!

Mordy, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 00:55 (seventeen years ago)

1997 = FFVII and then some others, I suspect.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 09:47 (seventeen years ago)

good result, although i voted Turrican as i never played monkey island at the time (only recently)

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 10:01 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know, I think you guys are hard on SMW - at the time it was this big system selling push for the SNES. A great game at the time. Arguably the same level of quality as New SMB, I'd say, and that was still pretty darn good.

What shocks me is that it only beat Minesweeper by 1 vote, which is CRAZY. Even crazier than Mega Man 3 getting zero votes.

Nhex, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 10:48 (seventeen years ago)

It's really crazy that Spellcasting 101 came out the same year as Monkey Island. Them seem like different generations of video games. (And I guess they sorta are: MI being one of the first graphic adventure game, and Spellcasting 101 being one of the last commercial text adventure games.)

Mordy, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 10:58 (seventeen years ago)

no i don't understand Mine getting so many votes either, but then again i don't understand how Wing commander got none - as i've read many posters saying what a great game it was.

which proves these polls mean NOTHING lol

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 11:39 (seventeen years ago)

WHAT HOW CAN U SAY THEY MEAN NOTHING

Mordy, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 11:48 (seventeen years ago)

SMW was def as good as any of the mario games before it.

wing commander is great but i spent way more time on wc II.

Jordan, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

I dunno if I'd so far as to say that SMW was as good as SMB3 but that's kinda like saying... i dunno make up your own simile where someone compares one of the best things ever to the best thing ever.

Everyone is a Jedi (Will M.), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 19:08 (seventeen years ago)

These polls would be more interesting if people were voting top 5s (or etc.), with the results balanced out. It gets weird when you overweigh one choice.
