lol i was one of like twenty people to be playing Saturn games in 1997

z z. st. z z. uv (Lamp), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 13:11 (seventeen years ago)

this is a really dope game too

z z. st. z z. uv (Lamp), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 13:12 (seventeen years ago)

Dragon Force in 1997 so apologies if you wanted to vote for Carmageddon

lol so you included neither?

Gran Turismo, turned this game inside out night after night. Fucking amazing feeling after getting gold in all the licence tests.

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 13:55 (seventeen years ago)

dragon force came out in 1995 or 96 i only mentioned it to account for all the saturn/japanese games on the list which i dont think ppl here play/care for that much. and carmageddon sux.

z z. st. z z. uv (Lamp), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 14:10 (seventeen years ago)

more 1997 games:

GoldenEye 007
Turok
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee
Bushido Blade
Jedi Knight - Dark Forces II
Riven
Blade Runner
The Last Express
Deadly Rooms of Death <- my fave

abanana, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

well it would have been a toss up between Abe, 007 and Gran Turismo but I think it would have fallen to GT in the end anyway.

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 14:57 (seventeen years ago)

goldeneye, by a mile

hand-dived challops (cozwn), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 14:57 (seventeen years ago)

and i seriously dont' remember a blade runner game in 97

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 14:59 (seventeen years ago)

wow, i have played almost none of these, so it has to be FFVII (which has got to be the only rpg I've ever played twice?).

i really wanted to love Colony Wars as a Wing Commander successor, but it was hard and couldn't get anywhere. :(

Jordan, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 15:00 (seventeen years ago)

haha i thought i had included goldeneye. :\

z z. st. z z. uv (Lamp), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 15:25 (seventeen years ago)

btw i've never played fallout but i'd like to at some point

Jordan, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

I'm going to withhold my vote for a few days as I meditate in the woods and contemplate my choices. I'll probably end up going for FFT. I've sunk more time into that game than probably any other in my life.

z "R" s (Z S), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

Hardest choice so far, really. FFIIV is the reason I scraped together my hard-earned allowance and flyer route money for a PS1....but Bushido Blade and FF Tactics saw more play time overall. And then there's Fallout v.s. Total Annihilation on the PC front.

Matt D, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 17:08 (seventeen years ago)

haha, FFVII is ALSO the reason I scraped together money from MY flyer route for a PS1! I had to check that I didn't write that entire comment. But then the Total Annihilation thing, which I never played (we definitely didn't have a copmuter that could run it until it was to late)

Everyone is a Jedi (Will M.), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

If Curse of Monkey Island wins 13-4 over FFT...well...

You know, I'll whine about it, probably.

z "R" s (Z S), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 18:16 (seventeen years ago)

Goldeneye is the only one of these I've played.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

Hardest choice so far, really.

yah this is why i wanted to do a '97 poll i think it may be the best year overall. i def couldn't find a year with more ultraclassics... kinda bummed i messed up the poll and left off obv great games like goldeneye and bushido blade (altho i might still pick dynasty warriors over it). i left off some things i thought no one would vote for like Langrisser or Deadly Rooms of Death (lol) intentionally.

i think my top ten goes something like:

01 Final Fantasy Tactics
02 Shinging Force III
03 Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
04 Princess Crown
05 Dynasty Warriors
06 Total Annihilation
07 Madden NFL 98
08 Klonoa
09 SaGa Frontier
10 Age of Empires

z z. st. z z. uv (Lamp), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 18:49 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, without Goldeneye this poll really needs to be scrapped and restarted.

Bladerunner was AWESOME Ste, it was just a PC Graphic point-and-clicky, but the atmosphere was perfect and it had about 7 different endings or something, many of which branched off pretty early in the game, so I replayed it lots. Still have it somewhere, I'm going to have to dig it out and give it another go now.

I guess I did a lot of gaming in 97 (it was the year of my finals, heh...and also the year I bought my N64), cos there are 7 or 8 games on the list I could make a case for.

JimD, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 19:16 (seventeen years ago)

i remember dudes playing goldeneye all the time, and hating it myself because of the wildly crappy controls

Jordan, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

goldeneye's domino 2.1 was pretty good; the first console fps control scheme really

conzeny (cozwn), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

I would have voted for Goldeneye, otherwise this was a year that I played very little, as it was the end of my first year of graduate school, the best of times and the worst of times, but mostly the latter.

at once ultrahip and painfully earnest (Euler), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

These polls would be more interesting if people were voting top 5s (or etc.), with the results balanced out. It gets weird when you overweigh one choice.

i would be willing to do this for the 1997 poll since i screwed up the list if people wanted to

my main issue w/goldeneye was the bland sameness of the levels

z z. st. z z. uv (Lamp), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 19:41 (seventeen years ago)

Wow, very tough one. FF VII and Tactics the same year? I looked it up and they actually came out within six months of each other. The Square machine was working overtime back then!

A lot of fan favorites here - Castlevania: SOTN, Parappa, Goldeneye, even Klonoa to a certain set. I didn't many of these games until years later under emulation, and a few held up pretty well. PCs has a good year too, with Curse of Monkey Island (you'll surely avoid scurvy if you all eat an orange.), Quake II, Diablo (the original!), MDK and even a bunch I never played (Ultima Online, Age of Empires, Dungeon Keeper) considered classics by some. Too bad about The Last Express being left off.

I guess it's a nobrainer that I'd pick Fallout, but come on. It's Fallout. If this were a regular internet poll, I'd guess that it would easily go to a Goldeneye/FF VII split, but since this is ILG which, from the last several polls, seems pretty PC-favoring, it'll be much more of a toss-up.

And I absolutely loved that Blade Runner PC adventure game (from the makers of Command & Conquer?), horribly underlooked.

Nhex, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 21:02 (seventeen years ago)

Battlespire! No, kidding. Really, Fallout.

Man, I played a huge amount of Theme Hospital that year.

Mordy, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

because it's going to come up when the poll results are announced:

I am the one who chose Diddy Kong Racing.

AND I WOULD DO IT AGAIN, even if Goldeneye were in the list

I love a man in chloroform (salsa shark), Thursday, 13 November 2008 15:41 (seventeen years ago)

where's the link to the ILE best video games poll with the nominations and stuff?

Everyone is a Jedi (Will M.), Thursday, 13 November 2008 17:46 (seventeen years ago)

this is my year. god i feel disgustingly nostalgic.

my head is telling me to vote ffvii, since it is the best console rpg ever made and all that, except i didn't really play it until around late '98.

but deep down, based on play counts alone, i know it's between either tekken 3 or parrapa the rapper, followed closely by alundra and gta. all four are unimpeachable classics of their genre, and two of them pretty much invented whole new genres.

(would've voted goldeneye if it was included!)

the game i really played the shit out of all over 97 was MISCHIEF MAKERS

rio (r1o natsume), Thursday, 13 November 2008 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

man i pine for the days when every computer game had a j-trance soundtrack

rio (r1o natsume), Thursday, 13 November 2008 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

You know Alundra is a straight Zelda rip-off, right? I mean, better than any of the 2d ones, but still not exactly a shining beacon of originality.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 14 November 2008 10:28 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know why I'm being so harsh, I loved it and it blew my tiny mind (haha partly as a contrast to FFVII - this was a game where it was impossible to grind, you had to be good enough to get past this dungeon to unlock the thing that would let you get further). I think I just felt duped when I first saw Link To The Past and went ".... oh. Fuck!"

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 14 November 2008 10:35 (seventeen years ago)

FALLOUT.

woulda probably voted for Goldeneye though.

circa1916, Friday, 14 November 2008 12:05 (seventeen years ago)

no, i wasn't aware that alundra is a straight zelda rip off. a link to the past had no where near the same level of puzzle difficulty as alundra. are you saying that secret of mana and evermore are also straight zelda rip offs? anyway, since when did originality have anything to do with gameplay? wasn't ff just a straight rip off of dragon quest?

alundra is so good because it manages to combine the kind of puzzles you'd find in an old school turn based rpg with the simplicity of a hacknslash game such as zelda

rio (r1o natsume), Friday, 14 November 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

um anyway.. MISCHIEF MAKERS

rio (r1o natsume), Friday, 14 November 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

even Klonoa to a certain set

z z. st. z z. uv (Lamp), Friday, 14 November 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

This is SOTN vs Mario Kart 64 for me, and while I probably had more collective group fun with MK64, hours logged in SOTN wins it out. Fantastic game.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 14 November 2008 18:25 (seventeen years ago)

Mario Kart 64

Funky Buddha Lounge (Curt1s Stephens), Friday, 14 November 2008 18:26 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Gotta be FFTactics; I probably spent as much time with that game as anything else I did in '97.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 00:30 (seventeen years ago)

Tho' FF7 was pretty important.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 00:30 (seventeen years ago)

1. Deadly Rooms of Death (best puzzle game ever)
2. Curse of Monkey Island (what I voted for)
3. Final Fantasy VII
4. Riven
5. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (the DS games have surpassed it, however)
6. Fallout
7. The Last Express
8. Final Fantasy Tactics (loved it, although the portable games have improved the battle system)
9. Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee
10. Blade Runner

abanana, Tuesday, 18 November 2008 00:49 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

with at least five write-in votes for goldeneye

z z. st. z z. uv (Lamp), Wednesday, 19 November 2008 00:15 (seventeen years ago)

I would have voted for DROD too!

I HAVE FINISHED DROD, I tried to find a way to mention that subtlely but thinking on the fact is like a song in my heart.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Wednesday, 19 November 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

didnt see this poll until now but curse of monkey island takes this in a walk for me, probably my favorite game from my favorite genre

mariokart is certainly the one i've spent the most time playing though
