It's out today.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)
Y'know, the demo didn't really get me into it. And I wanted to be! It just felt sorta like an updated Dragon's Lair: push button now, press right now. Or worse: like an entire game of Metroid wall jumping.
― forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 21:01 (seventeen years ago)
o_O okay now I want it
― Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 21:01 (seventeen years ago)
All the demos I've seen LOOK great, the gameplay looks a lot like Prince of Persia only without the time fuckwithery. It's probably going to be hard as shit.
― BODY PROP (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 21:27 (seventeen years ago)
I loved the demo but from what I've heard, I just can't justify dropping 70 or 80 bucks on a game that insanely short.
― Everyone is a Jedi (Will M.), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 21:35 (seventeen years ago)
This looks awesome! I will wait a few months and it'll be cheap, I'm sure. I'm shocked at how quickly games go from $60 to affordable these days.
― at once ultrahip and painfully earnest (Euler), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago)
arriving tomorrow by post, can't wait.
― zappi, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 21:43 (seventeen years ago)
The argument for the pricetag is the OCD glory of the time trials, vs. the single player campaign. Want this, even though I have two left thumbs when it comes to timing and chaining jumps.
― scampering alpaca, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)
This game has "rental" written all over it.
― polyphonic, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 22:21 (seventeen years ago)
played this demo yesterday, and liked it much more than i thought i would. looks incredible, and the fact that death comes in the form of making a mistake and hurtling to the ground at high speed gave it way more gravity (yeah i know) than i am used to. i was just talking to a friend yesterday about the fact that im digging the modern video game death scenes weird serious tone. after years of GTA and FPS stuff, theres just something bracing about that "hey i think i'm going to make it to that verticle pipe oh shit maybe not. oh look here comes the ground." moment. scrabbling at the wall you didn't quite make it onto as you start to plummet adds a nice panicky feeling as well.
― CHARMING LMAO (John Justen), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 22:58 (seventeen years ago)
That does sound neat, I could get into that. I did get mild vertigo from being on super tall buildings in GTA IV and the few times I did make a mistake and step off the edge or fall off the bottom of a ladder, i got a moment of real OH SHIT sweaty panic.
― ledge, Thursday, 13 November 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)
Really enjoying this so far (finished the first two levels and did the first speed run level). One of the main things for me might just be the graphics. I REALLY enjoy the clean / different look of the city they've created & the vibrant / stark coloring. The platforming works really well, and stringing together a series of successful moves feels great. Failing certain things over and over again feels horrible, as it probably should in a semi-challenging game. Originally I thought the idea of not using the guns was dumb, but once I started playing I found myself going the pacifist route (so far). Not shooting seems to make the game a lot harder. Everything about Mirror's Edge so far feels very replayable, so I'm not feeling too bad about the length. In fact, it's feeling like one of those classic games that will actually be better / more fun on repeated run-throughs, when you kind of know what to do already and just get to do it.
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 13 November 2008 08:21 (seventeen years ago)
seems silly that there's guns in this game at all.
― s1ocki, Thursday, 13 November 2008 08:24 (seventeen years ago)
I played the demo and got dizzy. But it was fun.
― Mordy, Thursday, 13 November 2008 08:25 (seventeen years ago)
heck yes
― Ant Attack.. (Ste), Thursday, 13 November 2008 09:14 (seventeen years ago)
ok, love this game. but ..... "Your Gamer Profile does not have the correct permissions to access Xbox Live functionality". what, i have to pay for xbox gold just to see leaderboards!??!?
― zappi, Thursday, 13 November 2008 14:31 (seventeen years ago)
I shot a dude by semi-accident and have been wracked with guilt ever since.
I'm on chapter four and am enjoying this immensely. Its uniqueness is especially highlighted after a weekend spent repeatedly shooting aliens in the face.
― GM, Thursday, 13 November 2008 16:09 (seventeen years ago)
I gave up on the non-violence already (chapter 3). I found myself getting too frustrated with the combat sections. The timing for disarms is really too precise. After getting killed over and over in the same section I found it very satisfying to give up and just grab a shotgun and shoot the blues in the guts.
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 14 November 2008 19:47 (seventeen years ago)
whether i get this or not, wow, the demo is beautiful. i'm loving the idm/fitness magazine/rotoscoping/nike commercial feel of it
― goole, Sunday, 16 November 2008 00:26 (seventeen years ago)
I watched my friend beat this tonight. Very short game. I strongly recommend you rent this rather than buy it.
― polyphonic, Sunday, 16 November 2008 03:32 (seventeen years ago)
the time trials on this are brutally hard. just making it into the lowest one star rating on a couple of stages.
― zappi, Sunday, 16 November 2008 20:09 (seventeen years ago)
surprised at the mixed reviews for this one. I'm on the last chapter and have loved it pretty much all the way through. The story definitely could've been better, but the gameplay is fairly awesome.
― GM, Monday, 17 November 2008 16:35 (seventeen years ago)
SO INTO THIS
― warmsherry, Monday, 17 November 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)
Pretty sick of this game. Keep getting stuck too much. Keep having to do the same sections too many times in a row. Hearing that guy bark the same instructions in my ear over and over. Right now I'm only near the end of chapter 5 (in the mall), one more jump to a thin red bar that I can't seem to make and have tried many times over. I think I'm going to give up and trade this one in, because the frustrations have unfortunately outweighed the fun bits and excellent visuals and atmosphere.
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 28 November 2008 06:12 (seventeen years ago)
love this game, now playing through again using guns, which is a lot easier. still lousy at time trials though.
― zappi, Friday, 28 November 2008 11:48 (seventeen years ago)
Can anyone provide a simple description of this game. I've read several reviews and I still don't get it. Is it some kind of first person platform thing?
― baaderonixx, Friday, 28 November 2008 13:35 (seventeen years ago)
yes, its a first person platform game, with environment puzzles (how do i get up to that ledge? etc). once you get the hang of the controls the fun comes from running at full speed stringing together moves while avoiding the gunfire of those chasing you. resorting to combat sort of defeats the point of the game.
― zappi, Friday, 28 November 2008 14:42 (seventeen years ago)
parkour the game?
― BIG HOOS is those british white steens (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Friday, 28 November 2008 16:22 (seventeen years ago)
That is exactly what it is, plus some weird combat stuff.
― polyphonic, Friday, 28 November 2008 19:11 (seventeen years ago)
Despite my mixed feelings about this game, I'm kind of interested in the upcoming abstract map pack - it just looks so incredible (just wish it actually played incredibly)http://www.vimeo.com/2425217
― Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:37 (seventeen years ago)
Whoa, that looks awesome.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:50 (seventeen years ago)
ok that looks fantastic! I love the demo of this game but cannot justify full price for it. but I am patient...
― Euler, Thursday, 4 December 2008 18:59 (seventeen years ago)
this game annoys me intensely.
― what U cry 4 (jim), Monday, 15 December 2008 23:45 (seventeen years ago)
it's alright fun when it's not being annoying. but i've lost count of how many times i've fucked up trying to jump between these two trains.
― what U cry 4 (jim), Monday, 15 December 2008 23:46 (seventeen years ago)
Are you sure you have to jump? I seem to remember I just walked across. Like I moved up near the front of the first train, and then when they start getting side by side I just pushed right? I'm not totally sure, but I don't remember getting stuck there.
― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 00:54 (seventeen years ago)
see i didn't even have to jump. annoying.
― what U cry 4 (jim), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 00:59 (seventeen years ago)
oh fuck you this game.
Keep getting shot while trying to swing from a bar on to an elevated platform. kfjdaslfjsdklfjsdflk. What's even more annoying is that when you get shot to death while hanging on to the bar you still die as if you were just slumping to the ground, despite being like 100 ft high, so you fall on your side suspended in midair. PLAYTEST YOUR GAMES BAWBAGS.
― what U cry 4 (jim), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 03:42 (seventeen years ago)
and they're autofuckingrespawning so that even when i go down and kill them all by the time I've gone back up again more arrive.
― what U cry 4 (jim), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 03:46 (seventeen years ago)
I know exactly where you're talking about as I quit the game there (for a couple of weeks). When I went back, I didn't have too much trouble though. If you turn the left corner, take out the first blue through the glass from behind, then run at the guy to you right, shooting him in the head & from where he was standing shoot across the mall, you can take out the machine gun guy - then run back to that little room and hop up into that attic area, you can make the jumps to the bar and catwalk before more guards show up.
― Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 05:10 (seventeen years ago)
heh, yeah, I think maybe they weren't auto-respawning I was just forgetting to kill one of them and he was doing a good job of killing me.
Finished it now, which means it must be pretty short, can't have played it for more than 5 hours, including all the time I wasted fucking things up.
Really liked parts of this game: the general parkour gameplay idea; the graphics, especially with all the bold primary colours and whites; some of the idm tunes during the stages. But it's left down by the many annoying bits, overly short length, and anti-climactic ending (and I don't mean that as in story terms, looks like they're leaving it open for a sequel there, what I mean is that there's no feeling of things culminating, last level isn't harder than the ones that have came before, no last boss etc.).
― what U cry 4 (jim), Tuesday, 16 December 2008 23:03 (seventeen years ago)
i just tried a speed run, got 2:35:54 after 2 attemps on the prologue level. The World's Best is 1:59:10. God knows how they did that, I felt like I was almost flawless with my second run! Thankfully the "qualifying time" that you get an achievement for beating is only 3:00:00
― what U cry 4 (jim), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)
You can download their ghosts and race 'em / try to keep up. It's a shame there's no option to just watch the fast ones though.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)
how do you download the ghosts?
― what U cry 4 (jim), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 20:24 (seventeen years ago)
I don't remember exactly, but it's all in game... something like when you boot up time trial, you select race(?) and then you can select an opponent from the leaderboard... then when you start the game the opponent is sort of a red ghost you race against (not totally positive this is in speed run mode too, but it's definitely in time trial, as I tried it)
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 20:44 (seventeen years ago)
ah yeah, i get ya. just on speed run. this ghost guy is doing some wild shit!
― what U cry 4 (jim), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)
BTW for non-owners of the game: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=204313
― VISION QUEST TO KNOCK YOU UP (John Justen), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 21:40 (seventeen years ago)
went through this again, on difficult this time. Definitely a decent wee game. Don't have the patience to get involved in trying to get good at the speed runs and time trials though, which is a shame because that would have added a bit more replayability on to it which it sorely needs, being so short.
― what U cry 4 (jim), Friday, 19 December 2008 02:14 (seventeen years ago)
four of us swapped a controller between us while playing this via a video projector last night, and it was AWESOME.
― Harvey Weewax (stevie), Tuesday, 23 December 2008 10:58 (seventeen years ago)
so this just ended up on the scrounging clearance rack at my local target so i bought it. as a dude that generally gets controller-breaking angry at platformers, this seems kind of easy so far, and weirdly less frustrating than i imagined it would be (note: i suck at trad 2d and 3d platformers). kind of wondering if the always running fast twitch jump aspect is working in my favor by keeping me from double-guessing my jumps? will see if i am still saying the same thing at later stages tho -
― no. (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 April 2009 22:39 (seventeen years ago)
it really does look fantastic too, the first time i ended up in an interior (whatever the accounting office is in) and everything was green and super vibrant was an awesome counterpoint to the white bright rooftop stuff.
― no. (jjjusten), Thursday, 23 April 2009 22:43 (seventeen years ago)
ok this shit is frustrating

just to reiterate, this is rad.
― Suggesteban Cambiasso (jim), Monday, 4 May 2009 16:26 (seventeen years ago)
Just made a start on this. You know what'd be really great? If it had a replay option, but then the replays were 3rd person, so you got to see how fancy you looked doing all that fancy stuff.
― JimD, Thursday, 21 May 2009 22:38 (sixteen years ago)
that's a great idea
this is all installed on my pc and ready to go but the main thing putting me off playing this again is that i can't change the controls - i'm stuck having the shoulder buttons (i use an xbox 360 controller) do important things, i'd much rather change them but this doesn't seem to be an option. annoying
― NI, Thursday, 21 May 2009 23:14 (sixteen years ago)
have you tried xpadder? http://xpadder.com/
― zappi, Friday, 22 May 2009 00:11 (sixteen years ago)
oh, just noticed you have to pay for it now.<a href=http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Xpadder-Download-45445.html">free version still available</a>, though
― zappi, Friday, 22 May 2009 00:15 (sixteen years ago)
