pretty good so far! seems like an improvement on the original, which was decent enough but nothing spectacular, in every way--controls, graphics, weapons, enemies. plus a totally different co-op campaign! and 60-person battles online!

never played the original, but 2's a pretty generic shooter thus far. played some 60-dude team deathmatch the other night, and it was fun, but an almost endless series of sniper headshots immediately upon respawning.

yes it's fun + v good multi so far. we could co-op campaign together!

I thought the first game had a very average single player and a pretty fun multiplayer. I'm about halfway through the single player campaign on 2 and have played about 4-5 hours of multiplayer and co-op and my feelings are mixed.

In some ways, there's lots of single player improvements over the first game (at times, really great graphics), but in other ways, Resistance 2 has lots of annoying and at times horrible gameplay design decisions, that really bring the experience down... for instance, the one hit kill, invisible enemies and the indestructible things that swim in the water - it doesn't make sense that I can destroy a 100 foot tall alien with a few well placed rockets, but can't harm an 8' long fish alien swimming in the water. Takes me out of the game. And I'm not too fond of the way they try to increase the difficulty sometimes by just throwing way too many enemies up against you, so you have to fight your way through an absurd wall of bullets. Again, it ends up feeling just very average (and at times, worse).

The multiplayer is again much better than the single player, but I've had some frustrating matchmaking experiences there too. I've never seen the so-called sixty player games show up. The biggest game I've been in had 21 players. The worst thing however, is that games are often terribly unevenly matched. I played one game of skirmish that was 11 vs 3! Just stupid. I also played a game of team deathmatch that was 5 vs 2 and eventually dripped down to 3 vs 1. Since I was the one, I can tell you, that wasn't very much fun. Probably wasn't too much fun to be the 3e either (boring to have that much advantage). It often seems like the map is too big for the game. Seems very frequently that I'll be in an 11 person deathmatch on a map made for 20. It doesn't seem to be scaling right. The co-op stuff is really fun when it works, but you need 8 people, and I've had games that started somehow with only three people in the lobby, which makes the mode basically impossible. Overall, when it's working right, the multiplayer stuff can be pretty good, but it's not good enough to pull me away from the great multiplayer games out there right now.

Semi-regret buying this, though I probably will play through to the end, and hopefully end up growing to enjoy it a little more.

having never played any form of on-line co-op in any game ever, how hobled would it be without a microphone?

GM, Thursday, 13 November 2008 19:58 (seventeen years ago)

Not very - it's pretty obvious what you have to do.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 13 November 2008 20:24 (seventeen years ago)

shoot dudes in the face!

jeff i'm surprised at your reaction tho! i mean i only spent an evening with this game so far but it's been so far so fun for me. the indestructible fish thing is really dumb but you know, what are you gonna do.

cutty, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:38 (seventeen years ago)

oh and s1ocki what's your name, i keep forgetting to add you

cutty, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:38 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, the single-player is really uninspired, but still fun enough if you're looking for a shooter. the co-op is really good, though. I've been playing that more than Gears 2 on-line.

GM, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

hmm. not what i want to hear :/

cutty, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

it's very slow and generic, but maybe that's just because I was playing Mirror's Edge at the same time.

GM, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:52 (seventeen years ago)

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:59 (seventeen years ago)

I think the co-op mode is the best thing in here, but I wish there was a little more to it. Just three classes isn't really enough, and then every game is basically the same as there is really only one effective strategy to get through the levels... soldiers with shields up front, fed ammo from special ops, fed health from medics - try not to get separated... and the objectives are all basically the same, run here, shoot these guys, take this position, defend this position, repeat. Still, it's fun when it's working right, but it's not great. Maybe it gets better as you level up and get more interesting stuff (all my classes are around level 5 or so - so I've played some, but not a ton).
