s1ocki, Thursday, 27 November 2008 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

yay! this is a question for the podcasti am recording tonight. thanks SeeZee-N!

Even better if you guys answer "What video game franchises should be retired and what should they be replaced with?" Bonus points for conciseness, funniness and originality. Invisible points.

oh god sonic, yes

mortal kombat as well

czn (cozwn), Thursday, 27 November 2008 19:18 (seventeen years ago)

Tomb Raider and Prince of Persia. And the very least, they should go on a break (unless the new Prince of Persia is as good as I've heard it might be).

polyphonic, Thursday, 27 November 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)

it would be nice for there to be a final Zelda, one where Ganon is as evil and dark as he was in Ocarina of Time - something really huge and final-feeling.

Tony Hawk could conceivably get better if a better firm got hold of it, but I don't see that happening, so it should be put out of its misery - THPSII was one of the all-timers and it's a shame that it's fallen so far.

You're about four years late with Tomb Raider polyphonic, the last three have been super-sweet!

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 28 November 2008 10:44 (seventeen years ago)

sonic agreement here

personally I'd say the fifa games are a fucking joke being released as a full game every year instead of a base game with cheaper seasonal add-ons. but that's just my opinion.

Zeldas have been an excellent showcase for "Here's new technology, how can it simulate the old technology and what new stuff can it do", though I suppose most of the great new ideas fall on barren ground EG I don't know if there was much else on the DS that made much use of the drawing-on-maps stuff from Phantom Hourglass.

The only game that I can think of for retirement is Tekken, because I just seriously don't think they're going to beat 3, but every one that comes out I'll still want to play. Everything else I'm still optimistic about - what if the next Spyro game isn't an enormous pile of crap? That would be awesome! I basically blame Tomb Raider actually, for proving that going back to basics and then building on that can make an amazing game.

Mario Galaxy and the DS Mario game are pretty great. As long as nintendo keeps up the quality, viva la mario.

Sonic is otm though.

circa1916, Friday, 28 November 2008 13:18 (seventeen years ago)

Galaxy is tops but I don't trust The New Nintendo to do another one ever. The new Animal Crossing game is a port of the DS one!

Really? I played the demo for the most recent one and it looked pretty cheesy.

polyphonic, Friday, 28 November 2008 22:29 (seventeen years ago)

Well, whaddaya want? There's tombs, she raids them. Secrets, gunfights, wholesale destruction of endangered species. The plot's not amazing, but the controls work well (the lack of a button to specify that actually I'd like to grab this ledge I've jumped at is one of the best changes there), and they've stripped off all the crap that they added over the years which led to EG Angel of Darkness. It's not Zelda->Ocarina of Time, but I don't think the original game require radical re-invention.

Katamari Damacy :(

Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 19 September 2009 06:01 (sixteen years ago)

Katamari should've been retired after the second PS2 game though, it's all been downhill from there.

JimD, Saturday, 19 September 2009 09:27 (sixteen years ago)

has keita takahashi even been involved since that one? iirc he didn't even want to make we <3 katamari and only agreed to do so because he feared namco would fk it up royally

cozwn, Saturday, 19 September 2009 10:49 (sixteen years ago)

awwww i haven't played katamari since the the second one & was hoping this might be a return to form

zappi, Saturday, 19 September 2009 11:30 (sixteen years ago)

ROCK BAND: BORBETOMAGUS (haitch), Saturday, 19 September 2009 12:12 (sixteen years ago)

JimD - I absolutely agree. Katamrai was pretty much the last game I expected to see get so whored out.

Zappi - the new one is a return to form, in that it seems to be half the exact same game with a crappy, crayon (cell-shaded?) filter applied to the graphics, which suck?!? I tried the two level demo last night and it just felt completely pointless (at best)

Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 19 September 2009 14:56 (sixteen years ago)

New pro evo is plumming new depths of sucktitude.

amarillo fat (jim), Saturday, 19 September 2009 14:58 (sixteen years ago)

As soon as PES goes FIFA will completely stop improving.

Why championship manager? It's still great every year.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Saturday, 19 September 2009 18:01 (sixteen years ago)

sonic and zelda pretty otm

candice spergin (cankles), Saturday, 19 September 2009 18:04 (sixteen years ago)

I wouldn't even mind if we kept getting churned-out katamari sequels which just had new levels and objects but the same gameplay. Trouble is, every game since the second has tried to introduce new types of level which expect you to only collect certain types of object from the world. Which instantly kills dead the whole joyful "roll up everything you can" feel (which is what makes the first two great) and replaces it with a fiddly pain in the arse.

JimD, Saturday, 19 September 2009 18:44 (sixteen years ago)

ok i tried the katamari demo and it seemed a bit off. the level that was inside had too much stuff to roll up, there were things everywhere! kinda took any skill out of it. oh well will pick up a copy when its super cheap in a few of months time.

zappi, Saturday, 19 September 2009 20:36 (sixteen years ago)

what happened with nobinobi boy? Like nobody(nobody) discussed it at all.

on this clip, it looks like the graphics in katamari forever alternate between the cell shaded, to other styles?

well i'm looking forward to it anyway.

Great Scott! It's Molecular Man. (Ste), Saturday, 19 September 2009 22:07 (sixteen years ago)

From what I've read you get to choose which one you want whenever you want in an options menu; the demo forces you to suffer through enjoy the new ones. Katamari Forever doesn't look like a terribly good idea, and definitely not worth full price, but it seems like they didn't fuck it up six ways to sunday like the Xbox version. It definitely needs to be the last- the way it's been marketed in Japan (as "Katamari Tribute") and the whole greatest-hits construction makes me hopeful it will.

xpost JimD, We <3 Katamari was chock full of item-specific levels!

More Butty In Your Pants (Telephone thing), Saturday, 19 September 2009 23:46 (sixteen years ago)

The new Katamari soundtrack cover almost justifies the game...

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 20 September 2009 04:41 (sixteen years ago)

Well maybe my memory's failng me a bit, but didn't we <3 have objecives that were along the lines of "get as many of these as you can...but if you get other stuff too that's ok"? As opposed to the more recent "get lots of these...and avoid everyhing else!". I just don't remember ever thnking "oh shit, I didn't mean to pick THAT up" in the second game, but seemed to find myself thinking it all the time in later ones.

JimD, Sunday, 20 September 2009 06:26 (sixteen years ago)

*cough* halo

Great Scott! It's Molecular Man. (Ste), Sunday, 20 September 2009 21:51 (sixteen years ago)

Not sure, JimD, it's been a while since I played it. I haven't played anything past <3, actually- there was the one PSP game and the crappy 360 one, right?

More Butty In Your Pants (Telephone thing), Monday, 21 September 2009 02:43 (sixteen years ago)

in we <3 there is an "avoid all cows and bears" stage which is intentionally annoying; i'm guessing most players just rolled up the first cow/bear and then ignored the stage.

if they figured out a way to get rid of the timer, katamari could be interesting again.

abanana, Monday, 21 September 2009 03:11 (sixteen years ago)

Take out the time limits and you got nobi nobi boy - and trust me, you don't want that. Actually, you can already play all the Katamari games without a timer after you beat each level and the game like that is just completely unfun (you can use it to explore and hunt around for cousins or presents you've missed, I guess, if that's your thing).
