Reception

Like most movie-based games, LJN's 'Friday the 13th' was a fairly poor game. The graphics were sub-par (whenever Jason used the ax in the RPG-mode, it looked like he was holding a bath brush) and gameplay got cheap later on when Jason became lightning fast in RPG-mode, making the battles very difficult. Many critics panned this game and 'Friday the 13th' appeared on several 'Worst NES Games' lists (Nintendo Power magazine, in Vol. 100, declared 'Friday the 13th' the worst game ever). However, despite its warts, the game seems to have an allure for some gamers. Some people have also stated that 'Friday the 13th' was one of the forerunners of survival-horror games like 'Resident Evil' and Silent Hill.

-game wasn't hard. jason's moves in the house became predictable and you could dodge him every time. you didn't need to do the side quests to beat him. you could kill him with a knife easily enough. and the game is fun because it was the real first scary game that I know of. (edit- the witches in castlevania 2 freaked me too). the graphics weren't "sub-par", compared to other nintendo games. I mean they all had pretty sucky graphics for the most part. All in all, the hate for this game is much larger than it should be. It was decent and fun because you could beat it in less than 45 minutes.. and if you like long NES games, I would like to see you try enjoying them as much as short NES games nowadays. I mean, if I'm playing NES anyways, I want a game that I can pick up and beat in a day.

For some reason, I really liked this game, and wished I had owned it instead of just renting repeatedly. This was one of those games you'd see covered in all the shoddily produced hint books from 1988 to 1990.

Clumsy Colin Action Biker, on speccy.

I loved this game but it got absoloutely slated and everyone else laughed at such a crappy game. I no understand, finding those bike parts in houses was so satisfying.

I haven't played Friday the 13th since a bum rental in the late 80s, but I think the panning might have to do with exactly that situation - you rent a game, you're 9, you figure you'll be able to hop in and start playing - but my memory is that you wander around aimlessly trying to find something like a game, foolishly enter a house, go nuts trying to get OUT of the house because it's so confusing, and then maybe Jason kills you, seemingly at random.

The contemporaneous Ghostbusters and Superman games were similarly impenetrable. If you're going to do a cheap licensed game, just do a Mario, Contra, or Metroid-type game in the spirit of the license!

As far as the graphics, not that it really matters, but those are sub-par NES graphics, if the par is set by good games rather than by the flood of average games. I mean the level of detail is just not there - this looks like Kung Fu when you know that it's possible to do Castlevania.
