let's talk about ds homebrew, "backups," supercards, passmes etc etc

oops i pressed enter by mistake.

ok, so:

- WHO'S DOING IT
- WHAT ARE THEY DOING
- WHAT SHOULD I DO
- IS IT WORTH DOING
- WHAT'S UP.

s1ocki, Saturday, 17 March 2007 05:28 (eighteen years ago)

1) I am doing it.

2) I am playing US and Japanese games without paying for them and crying myself to sleep at night, but don't worry I paid for some of the good ones. It's become my substitute for cracking open brand new games at work to see which ones are any good, which made me a terrible person. Also there's this music software called Nitro Tracker which is great fun at work. You can record things through the DS mic and sequence them. I also read comics on the train on it! Oh, I draw pictures on it, too. Not on the label of the Supercard itself, but on the screen of the DS. It's better than Pictochat. There's probably loads of other stuff too, which I've neglected to mention. Oh, I also watched some episodes of Samurai Jack on the train the other week.

3) You should do it too. Maybe not get a Supercard, because I hear they're shit, but mine's excellent so maybe that's just sour grapes from folks who have somthing else.

4) Fuck knows, I didn't pay for it, it was a present. But the best games present I've had since NiGHTS on the Saturn that came with the 3D CONTROLLER.

5) Nothing much ta, but I'm rather tired. You?

melton mowbray, Saturday, 17 March 2007 06:08 (eighteen years ago)

i'm tired too!

s1ocki, Saturday, 17 March 2007 06:57 (eighteen years ago)

I know that more places are offering the r4ds for sale

i have a supercard cf in a ds phat and a supercard lite micro-sd thing for my ds lite. both are pretty good and i have had no problems with them. i think the only game i have had trouble playing on the supercard lite is nintendogs, which wont let me save.

webber, Saturday, 17 March 2007 09:02 (eighteen years ago)

questions!!

1) is there any disadvantage to using a supercard lite over a regular supercard? (i have a lite—do i have to use the supercard lite?)
2) what goes in the ds card slot? do i need a "superkey"?
3) ds-linker: worth trying? or any other option?
4) what kind of software and stuff do i need?
5) is this going to take like 2 weeks to get going or is it fairly fast out of the box if i am reasonably able with computers?

s1ocki, Saturday, 17 March 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

sorry, for 2) i meant "superpass."

but hey what is up with teh superkey? it looks way simpler!

s1ocki, Saturday, 17 March 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

wait i didn't know what i was talking about there.

but somebody tell me if this is a better option!

s1ocki, Saturday, 17 March 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

yeh, if you only want to play ds games, then thats a much better option as a) it uses clean roms ie no need to run them through patching software b) no need to flash ds c) pretty much plug n play, with next to no slowdown in any games (the castlevania games are supposed to cause a lot of problems in supercard-like devices). slot 1 devices like that have no way of emulating gba games though.

zappi, Saturday, 17 March 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

Glaaaah OMG! Pants officially pooped.

1. The advantages to a DS lite are a) they use micro sd cards so speeds are typically faster than sd or cf cards; b) it fits snugly with the DS lite and doesn't poke out; and c) it is more likely to be supported with firmware upgrades for new games. the new supercard rumble has rumble (obv) but does not have GBA functionality.
2.If you use a slot 2 solution like the supercard lite then you need a superkey/passme. You can get a passme and flash your DS (which is what I did), or you can just get a superkey and keep that in your DS for every time you play. The slot 1 cards like the one you linked later come with a superkey built in. However, they wont play GBA games or any homebrew that works off a GBA file - which, last I checked - was most of them.
4. If you get something similar to what I have, you need a program to configure the passme, the flashme program to initially flash your DS, and the supercard firmware and program to convert your files so the supercard can read them. If you get a superkey you won't need the first two things, and if you get a slot 1 thing I'm not sure you need any software at all. But the software is all really easy to find and use.
5. Assuming you have the right memory card you should be able to play backups about an hour after you get the card. It's generally really easy to set up and there are plenty of step by step guides to get you through the trickier bits (like if you want to flash your DS etc).

webber, Saturday, 17 March 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

s1ocki - Supercard One is what I use, and it's great - 100% perfect on my DS phat. Unfortunately does not work at all on my DS Lite. Crashes on startup of every commercial rom.

However, this is probably my DS, because they're supposed to work fine and dandy. It's worth noting the DS Lite also has a line of slightly lighter faded pixels across the screen, and fuzzy sound. I feel betrayed, as I've treated it with nothing but love and respect :(

DS Phat on the other hand, I've dropped three times onto concrete from the same train station wall on three seperate occasions, and just keeps on truckin' with the supercard!

melton mowbray, Sunday, 18 March 2007 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

I've got the M3 Perfect SD. I've not really had any major problems with compatibility except that sometimes games don't work when they are first released. New firmware stuff comes out for it all the time, which typically allows games to work just fine (I can't think of any game I've tried to play but not been able to eventually).
It's a Slot 2 solution, and so GBA works perfectly (also never had problems with any GBA games), and it allows you to run Gameboy, NES, and some other games on there too which I've also never had problems with. I flashed my DS using the SuperKey, so I have that going spare, which feels like a waste of £20 really once you have flashed it.
It's a piece of piss to setup and get running too, should only take a few minutes as it comes with all the software you need. I think there are quite a lot of options out there, and theres plenty chatter on the interweb to help you along if you ever do have issues with compatibility etc.

CraigG, Sunday, 18 March 2007 12:35 (eighteen years ago)

you guys are the best/

s1ocki, Sunday, 18 March 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

it ate my rather long post on the subject :(

basically i was saying that it is super easy. and to get the M3 Simply i think it is called.

Will M., Wednesday, 21 March 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

i was just gonna ask if anyone had any experience with the m3 ds simply. so you like? it's b/w that and the supercard ds one for me, so if anyone feels strongly either way let me know!

any advice on microsd memory brandS?

s1ocki, Friday, 23 March 2007 02:47 (eighteen years ago)

japanese-manufactured Kingston

kingfish, Friday, 23 March 2007 03:17 (eighteen years ago)

from what i have read the supercards are generally cheaper than other cards, but are uglier, less intuitive, and it sometimes takes a little while longer (like maybe a week max) before games are compatible. also all the documentation is in engrish. so i think it really depends on whether you can afford the extra money to get a few (mostly cosmetic) improvements.

and yea i have found kingston to be good

webber, Friday, 23 March 2007 04:21 (eighteen years ago)

japanese-manufactured Kingston

kingfish on Friday, 23 March 2007 03:17 (3 hours ago)

that's what i heard but... how do i know where the memory card is made? is there a place i can specifically order japanese-made micro sd cards?

s1ocki, Friday, 23 March 2007 06:55 (eighteen years ago)

ok i think i am going to do this! going to get a microsd card from ebay (can i use my digicam to transfer files?) and the simply from kick trading!

YAY

s1ocki, Friday, 23 March 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno about the digicam, but I use a $35 Future Shop thumbdrive to Micro SD thing I found. It may still be on sale... and it came with a no-name 1GB MicroSD and MiniSD/SD converters.

Apparently it's not on sale anymore... if the digicam doesn't work though, I suppose $60 isn't THAT bad...

Will M., Friday, 23 March 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

kicktrading sells one for $5!!

s1ocki, Friday, 23 March 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

argh kicktrading is out of m3 simplys :( should i kick in the extra 10 bones for the supercard? is it better/worse? i don't really wanna buy it from gamersection cuz they really bite you on the shipping.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 01:57 (eighteen years ago)

supercard's worse, not better. if it's not gonna take a year, wait for that simply.

Will M., Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

why worse?

s1ocki, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

At least the one I have is. Slot 2 means you need to have two parts to do stuff-- the key and the card. Twice as many things that can mess up. Plus, you have to convert every DS rom to its stupid format. The simply, you can just drag and drop them right in as they came. The supercard's leagues better than nothing at all, but the simply's just better than it.

Will M., Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

yeh, i've got a supercard and its a bit clunky. there are loads of other better options
have you been here yet? -> http://gbatemp.net/ loads of reviews of stuff down the lefthand side
i am a bad mang, i just got my wii chipped.

zappi, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

dudes i was thinking of supercard ds (one), which is slot 1!!

s1ocki, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

oh, i don't know that one at all. my friend who si a giant nerd about this kind of thing is all about the simply, though, and i really trust him on the matter. of course, he is also notoriously difficult to get into contact with, so i can't find out WHY, exactly, he thinks it is best...

Will M., Tuesday, 27 March 2007 21:44 (eighteen years ago)

is he gzeus?

s1ocki, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

i wish i was real life friends with gzeus, that shit would be wild

Will M., Wednesday, 28 March 2007 04:02 (eighteen years ago)

Last night, mine was an utter cunt and deleted my Ouendan save. Fuck!

Why do all my saves for shit games always remain intact?

melton mowbray, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 12:19 (eighteen years ago)

is there a PSP version of this thread?

admrl, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

psp, adam? i'm disappointed in you.

s1ocki, Friday, 30 March 2007 00:47 (eighteen years ago)

I love my PSP! Also it was a present and I've never paid more than $15 for a game = there's nothing not to like! I concede that I haven't bothered with all the other multimedia stuff because it is too damn frustrating (and I am usually good with such things). But give me Hot Shots Golf and Pro Evolution Soccer to play on my 20 minute BART ride and I'm happy.

admrl, Friday, 30 March 2007 01:14 (eighteen years ago)

that said...who wants to help me figure out how to encode video for a PSP??? I am a Mac user attempting to do so with FFMPEG and little success.

admrl, Friday, 30 March 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

get one visualhub dude!

s1ocki, Friday, 30 March 2007 02:21 (eighteen years ago)

seriously. it has a psp tab and it's pretty one-click.

s1ocki, Friday, 30 March 2007 02:21 (eighteen years ago)

what is it?

admrl, Friday, 30 March 2007 02:48 (eighteen years ago)

it is a program for your mac!

s1ocki, Friday, 30 March 2007 03:11 (eighteen years ago)

I should have done this earlier really, but I can WHOLEHEARTEDLY recommend the DS-Xtreme!

JimD, Friday, 30 March 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

haha "it's pretty one-click"

like 50 years in the future, children will say this and it will mean "awesome"

that, or simple.

Will M., Friday, 30 March 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

thanks slocki, it worked!

admrl, Friday, 30 March 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

my simply is here but my flashcard hasn't arrive yet! FEELING OF POWERLESSNESS.

s1ocki, Friday, 30 March 2007 23:48 (eighteen years ago)

I have taken the plunge and bought an M3 Simply.

aldo, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

dear memory card,

please come, and quickly. i can't take this any more.

love,

A FRIEND.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 01:11 (eighteen years ago)

Sweatypalms... I have ordered "the precious thing" as well and will be fiddling with it TONIGHT! So ILG-ers had better be online whilst I try to figure out how it works (ie play Horace Goes Skiing)

Sarah, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

Oh wait sarah, yours isn't the same as mine then...I've got the DS-Xtreme.

JimD, Thursday, 3 May 2007 00:12 (eighteen years ago)

R4 representz!

D00ds, I played Manic Miner and read a PG W0dehouse book on the DS this lunchtime...

The world is such a better place!!

Sarah, Thursday, 3 May 2007 13:58 (eighteen years ago)

The nice people who sent me my Simply included a micro-sd with it (at a very competitive price) with the software and a couple of r0m5 already on it, so it was genuinely plug&play.

Me too, and a free upgrade from 512MB to 1GB.

I am currently alternating between growing my BRANE and rolling super monkeys around.

onimo, Friday, 4 May 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

Christ, Manic Miner! I need to try some emulation on this thing. Is there a good Atari ST emulator? I wouldn't mind some Speedball 2 and, er, Dragon's Lair at work.

melton mowbray, Sunday, 6 May 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

three months pass...

how is this working out?

how do you get the.... *shhh*roms? have yous all been playing cool japanese rhythm games????

czn, Monday, 6 August 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

Argh, I can't find my Supercard!

I shhh roms off bittorrent, but I wish there were a good site to download one at a time as they come out, rather than waiting for big packs weeks/months later. And yes, they are ALL cool Japanese rhythm games :)

melton mowbray, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

a good site to download one at a time as they come out

It has some weird rules, but basically you go to their site, make an account, wait a bit, then make 50 non-spam replies on their stupid message board and you can do basically what you are asking. dgXXXXXXXXXemu.XXXXXXXcom

Will M., Tuesday, 7 August 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

a good site to download one at a time as they come out

blackcats dash games dot net for all yr torrenting rom needs. er.. so i've heard.

zappi, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

i still haven't received my r4, but i've been getting games from http://nds-roms.com/

use server 2. it's faster.

funny farm, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

i've never been able to get into black qatz because of their signup thing, or something... i forget, i only tried once a while ago.

Will M., Tuesday, 7 August 2007 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

Thanking you everyone :) Now I just have to find the bloody thing! It's about somewhere.

melton mowbray, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

it works well except--

battery seems to drain fast in sleep (maybe my ds is just weird)
uh

that's it!

it rules.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

Fuckin' found it!

melton mowbray, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

just ordered one today; v.exciting!

what you playing these days, melton?

czn, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not, actually! Just rediscovering this thing and downloading some shhhz. There's a feature in this month's Nintendo Magazine about Japanese games that haven't (and won't) come out over here, so I'm giving some of them a blast. I'd totally recommend picking it up (it's September's issue) if you've just ordered one, as I've been finding good lesser known games hard to find, with only text descriptions and Japanese info on the web. The downloads are pretty slow, but hopefully I'll at least have a couple done by the time I have to leave for work tomorrow.

I'll let you know how I get on with them, some look sort of good.

melton mowbray, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

I have a question:

in the guide slutski posted above, it says you have to download the full installation package before dragging and dropping the roms... presumably that's just drivers and associated bumf... I am working off a mac and so presumably I don't need that and can just plug and play using the bundled microSD reader?

or is there equivalent mac os x 'full installation package' software?

czn, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

not that I'll be dropping roms, I mean dropping linux

czn, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

linux rom

czn, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know about other types of these things, but with my Supercard I use OS X and just drag and drop using a micro SD reader. No software or anything.

Last night I gave Dokidoki Majo Shinpan a go, expecting some pervy teen-touching spectacle. Turns out you have to sit through a lot of boring screen tapping chat to get to that stuff, so I gave up (probably for the best).

There's one that looks a bit like Ouendan where you play a conductor for an orchestra. I'll try that one next.

melton mowbray, Thursday, 16 August 2007 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

i found this new site for grabbing this shit, called, err, let's say it's called d45hr0m5.com -- they just link to megaupload files for new stuff, so it's essentially unlimited HTTP DLs. pretty hot.

Will M., Thursday, 16 August 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

Nice one, ta :)

I'ma get this conductor game now. Yesterday I downloaded one called Mizuiro Blood, where you're a little ball with legs who has to write kanji in little boxes. When you fuck up he gets cut in half and blue blood spews everywhere. The first few levels were doable, but after that it got pretty bewildering.

Are there any more cutesy-yet-totally-fucking-morbid games on the DS?

melton mowbray, Friday, 17 August 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

seriously amazing

what other software are folk using (like note taking etc), besides the linux rom obv?

czn, Friday, 17 August 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

there are other games with the characters from mizuiro blood characters! I forget what they are though... i will try and find out!

Will M., Friday, 17 August 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

okay, i guess i was thinking of Taiko Drum Master. just the same artists.

Will M., Friday, 17 August 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, that one's great

czn, Friday, 17 August 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

OK, I have discovered snes emulation!

earthbound here I come

czn, Saturday, 18 August 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

I am picross's bitch

czn, Monday, 20 August 2007 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

Whoa, SNES emu? On DS? Is it any good? I may actually also play Earthbound if that's the case.

Will M., Monday, 20 August 2007 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

it's not brilliant and sound can be a bit crap on some games but I've had no problems with earthbound on it... anyway it's called snemuds... I have also been playing metal gear solid (gbc) using lameboy...

czn, Monday, 20 August 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

melton, where do you dl'd comic books for reading on yr ds?

presumably you use "comic books ds" to read them?

czn, Monday, 20 August 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

i am picross bitch too

s1ocki, Monday, 20 August 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

what format does it take czn? CBR?

Will M., Monday, 20 August 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

from the page:

The PC part, PictoDS, developped by Nicom00k, converts your pictures into a .cbds file (those pictures can be in a folder, a .zip, a .cbz, a .cbr, a .rar)

The DS part, ComicBookDS, developped by me, allows to display those .cbds files in a fast, pleasant and intuitive way (well, I hope;) ).

http://gnese.free.fr/NDS/ComicBookDS/?language=en

czn, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

I think I'll buy a DS just so I can play Super NES games on it.

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 26 August 2007 05:28 (eighteen years ago)

Oh christ, sorry I took so long to reply, cozen. You've answered for me, though :)

To be honest, I've not read a comic on the DS in ages! Inexplicably, I waste a lot of money on real ones. If anyone could find me a torrent or similar of Tintin comics in French I'd really, really, appreciate it. Other easy going French kids' comics would be as good. I really have no idea where to start with this sort of thing.

In other Supercard news, I'm finally going to try out that Conductor thing on the train to work. I also ssshhhed the Marvel Trading Card game, which looks wank. Touching up witches was rather awful from a pretty-much-hitting-things-at-random point of view. I must have played the thing for two hours or more and not once did I get to touch up any underage witches!

If there were more time before I have to leave today, I'd give emulation a go. Are any of you guys playing Earthbound successfully? If that works on the SNES emulators, I'm in. Also, is there an Atari ST one?

melton mowbray, Sunday, 26 August 2007 07:19 (eighteen years ago)

In other Supercard news, I'm finally going to try out that Conductor thing on the train to work.

Just to clarify - I'm not going to walk up and down the train pretending to punch tickets, though I've no doubt there's a DS game about that too.

melton mowbray, Sunday, 26 August 2007 07:23 (eighteen years ago)

Arf, why do I never hit that BBcode button?

okay, i guess i was thinking of Taiko Drum Master. just the same artists.

OMG, I always wanted this game! I had no idea there was a DS version, cheers for that! Will get nothing done at work today :)

melton mowbray, Sunday, 26 August 2007 07:31 (eighteen years ago)

SNES emulation is hit or miss really tbh (crappy sound on some ROMs and distorted images on others) but I've had no problems with earthbound or on (one of my other favourite SNES games) alien 3

lameboy ds (the gameboy and gameboy color emulator) and nesds both run perfectly though, and I have been caning mario golf (gbc)

picodriveds, megadrive emulator, is rubbish so steer clear.

haven't found an st or amiga emulator, which is annoying because mobile swos would be ideal!

czn, Sunday, 26 August 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

also TAIKO DRUM MASTER is awesome!

czn, Sunday, 26 August 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

mm, styxds is your friend:
http://deadketchup.kyuran.be/category/mydev/

czn, Sunday, 26 August 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

Conductor game is excellent! It's like Ouendan except the music is relaxing and doesn't drive you mental. V. easy though - I started playing around 11 and was finished by 1 :( I assume there's a hard mode, but I've not checked that out yet.

Taiko Drum Master - wow!!! Best rhythm/action on DS tbh.

Some Origami Thing - comes up with a warning in Japanese when I start the game up. Is this copy protection?

Marvel Trading Card Game - I left my stylus @ work so didn't get to play this :(

Cheers for the emulation tips! I'll definitely sort myself out Earthbound, as I never got very far into that. Alien 3 is amazing if it's the same as the one on other consoles (megadrive etc). Did you ever play the Terminator one that was quite similar?

StyxDS is exactly what I was after. Shame it isn't full speed! I'm itching to play some Speedball 2. I wonder how it handles the ST music apps like Cubase et al. Would be pretty awesome to run that from a DS!

that chinavision thing is also known as the Dingoo A320, there are reviews on youtube
apparently it works fine, but the snes & genesis emulation is supposed to be terrible
theres supposedly a better one called the GP2X coming out soon, but no idea of price yet http://gp2x.co.uk/
and if you are super rich you could get the Pandora http://www.openpandora.org/

You mean a DS SDK? If so, you should go to DevkitPro. It includes the libnds (as well as a bunch of other stuff for PSP, GC, etc etc), and I think has HAM or some other IDE included to make life a bit easier.
