FINALLY

Z S, Thursday, 11 December 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)

I thought the bizarre announcement was pretty funny!

Nhex, Thursday, 11 December 2008 18:54 (seventeen years ago)

I had the feeling this is the kind of thing we'd start to see more of

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 12 December 2008 00:13 (seventeen years ago)

dragon quest, or third party franchises exclusively on nintendo products again?

El Tomboto, Friday, 12 December 2008 01:59 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't even played Dragon Quest VIII. It's sitting right on my desk waiting for exams to be over. Worth playing?

burt_stanton, Friday, 12 December 2008 02:19 (seventeen years ago)

totally worth playing, that shit rules

Dragon Quest VIII

Nintendo has sold a shit-ton of wiis. It's cheaper and easier to develop for. It's obviously not just a fad, they sold 2 million this November in the US alone, two years after launch. Why wouldn't developers put their biggest games where they could potentially get the most sales and make the biggest profits? Especially in Japan, where the 360 is niche and the ps3 is ???

I think we're going to start seeing a lot more of these kinds of announcements in 2009, with most of the bigger games going to the wii. It should have started happening sooner.

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 12 December 2008 17:21 (seventeen years ago)

yeh software support was terrible in 2008 (most mystifyingly from Nintendo themselves), but next year is beginning to shape up pretty well.

zappi, Friday, 12 December 2008 17:38 (seventeen years ago)

I'm still a little skeptical. Besides this, NMH 2 and Madworld (two probably niche titles), what else is coming out for the Wii next year? Punch-Out? Most of the major Nintendo franchise titles have already come out for this system (Smash, Kart, Zelda, Mario). There's the MotionPlus thing but no titles have been announced for that as far as I know. Online is still so-so, and WiiWare isn't a huge draw (Cave Story remake aside). If anything Nintendo is looking for the next Wii Fit to keep the system alive. But maybe we'll hear more announcements in the next six months.

I don't mean to sound harsh on Nintendo, I've had a lot of fun with the Wii, but considering the staggering almost-PS2-like dominance of the system, like Jeff says, there should be way more exciting 3rd-party games coming out. Look at the DS - there were a zillion awesome non-Brain Age games out this year, despite the top seller being Guitar Hero: On Tour. The huge, broad library for the DS is what I'd like to see on the Wii.

Nhex, Friday, 12 December 2008 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

Where's Kid Icarus is what I wanna know.

forksclovetofu, Friday, 12 December 2008 19:40 (seventeen years ago)

Oh man burt it's good you waited until after exams to play Dragon Quest 8 or you would have failed them all. (Because you would have become addicted to the game, you see.)

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Friday, 12 December 2008 23:03 (seventeen years ago)

I am still impatient for Dragon Quest 9 for the DS!

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Friday, 12 December 2008 23:04 (seventeen years ago)

If anything Nintendo is looking for the next Wii Fit to keep the system alive

haha what

El Tomboto, Friday, 12 December 2008 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

third parties have been really slow to adapt to the wii, I think a lot of folks were hedging their bets and didn't really know what to do. Now that the Wii versions of Shaun White and Ghostbusters have both been written up as being well-made and possibly even more fun than their "true next gen" $60 editions, I'm pretty stoked for what the next year might bring.

El Tomboto, Friday, 12 December 2008 23:22 (seventeen years ago)

Obviously the system is far from dying, but these things are the Wii's bread and butter for the public at large - I mean what else would you call Wii Music? That ridiculous Mario Kart wheel? But then again who knows - they may have another big mass consumer product waiting in the wings for May '09.

Nhex, Saturday, 13 December 2008 00:34 (seventeen years ago)

i was reading something recently about how a lot of the creative teams within Nintendo haven't released anything for at least two years. what have they been doing? (apart from bathing in large tubs of cash, obv)

zappi, Saturday, 13 December 2008 00:38 (seventeen years ago)

nhex did you not see about wii sports 2 coming with the motionplus?

El Tomboto, Saturday, 13 December 2008 00:50 (seventeen years ago)

anyway I don't totally disagree with you, I just think you're missing some of the big releases - animal crossing for example (with the NINTENDO SPEAKERPHONE for MAD GAYNESS)

El Tomboto, Saturday, 13 December 2008 00:52 (seventeen years ago)

SEVENTH GENERATION CONSOLE WARS POLL

El Tomboto, Saturday, 13 December 2008 00:52 (seventeen years ago)

Urk- that totally slipped my mind. For some reason in the back of my head I thought it was just a demo, but looking it up now apparently there will be ten games in it, though only three were shown. I'm an idiot - of course that will be really huge.

Animal Crossing is a good call, considering how well the DS version did. I base some of these opinions anecdotally on my casual gaming friends - the ones who barely picked up a controller since the SNES's heyday, but got a Wii or DS for a handful of titles or for parties. Two of these friends said to me after Mario Kart, they had pretty much no interest in any Wii games coming out for the future (or any games for other consoles, they have no interest in 360 or PS3). I actually tried to get these guys into Animal Crossing, but no dice - and I was utterly obsessed with that game for the GameCube.

But uh, Dragon Quest X! Cool. I'm curious to play IX, myself - haven't played a DQ game since IV on the NES. Anyone try out the DS remake?

Nhex, Saturday, 13 December 2008 01:52 (seventeen years ago)

i'm still waiting for a level 5 RPG or a proper Castlevania game.

Vault Boy Bobblehead: Drinking (kingfish), Saturday, 13 December 2008 01:57 (seventeen years ago)

I think part of the problem is letting casual folks know what the hell is even available. rayman raving rabbids installments get a bit of advertising presence, and Shaun Wiite ran ads on ESPN I think, but really those folks who picked up a Nintendo product based on one or two games and haven't touched it are generally people who don't follow the gaming press or blogs and aren't going to have any idea about what's coming out that they might like. Couple that with the cavalcade of absolute trash available for the system at any brick-and-mortar storefront and it's little wonder, at least to me, that the system seems to have such a low attach rate.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 13 December 2008 02:06 (seventeen years ago)

i'm still waiting for a level 5 RPG

there's one out next week for the PS3 in japan. it looks really good.

v. excited about this though. i was worried that any new console DQs would be released for the PS3 as well

Lamp, Saturday, 13 December 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

brojar planera sin framtid (cozwn), Sunday, 14 December 2008 12:25 (seventeen years ago)

dear atlus, please port persona 4 to wii, ta.

zappi, Sunday, 14 December 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

two years pass...

So this is going to be an 'online' RPG for Wii and Wii U, which admittedly I find a bit disappointing. The link-up option was one I never used in DQ9 and I doubt I'd make any use of DQX's online capabilities either. I've read that it can be played solo, though.

There's also supposed to be a new Rocket Slime for 3DS, which actually has me more excited right now than DQX.

Japanese messageboards in meltdown apparently
it will probably sell less copies but make far more money thru online subscriptions & DLC
