Why had no one told me that this was out for PS2? Has anyone played it? What do they think?

kv_nol, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 11:48 (eighteen years ago)

Wonderful news. Although it means I wasted a couple hundred quid last year on a PSP just for this. I should have known better.

Anyway cool. It would be nice to know that they ironed out a lot of the bugs.

*off to check reviews*

Ste, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

I really liked the 99 red balloon hidden package on this.

Not a massive fan of the empire building sections though, but it didn't seem to interupt my game too much.

Everything else is simply brilliant and classic GTA, and like the way they improved the side missions with the 'reach-level-5-checkpoint' thing. So you don't have to start from scratch if you restart them.

Music on the radio stations is fabulous

Ste, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

I really liked the 99 red balloon hidden package on this.

Just saw this on the other thread. It seems you can shoot them though which is a good thing!

I like the sound of not starting from scratch.

Although it means I wasted a couple hundred quid last year on a PSP just for this. I should have known better.

Which is why I'm hoping that they'll come out with GTA:IV on PS2! I doubt it but I'll hope on nevertheless!

kv_nol, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

I think that is hoping a lot, they'd have to downgrade it some.

Oh and you can swim in VCS too!

Ste, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

Swimming is back? OH JOY! Is there climbing as well? I really hated that in VCS the amount of running that I had to do. Same with the original Vice City.

kv_nol, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 09:50 (eighteen years ago)

no climbing i'm afraid and even though swimming is back there's still a stamina limit to how long you can swim for.

I've completely converted my purist-nintendo friend to the world of GTA games, he can't stop playing VCS when he comes round now - initially he would refuse to even pick up a non-nintendo game controller.

It's like a sudden "oh, so THIS is why you've been addicted to these games"

And I only just found out that you get a 'face plant' bonus in LCS (when you fly over the handlebars of your bike)

Ste, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 11:22 (eighteen years ago)

I seem to remember learning that early on! I miss being able to level up skills. Being crap on bikes the whole way through is a bit shit.

kv_nol, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

anyway, VCS for PS2 has just landed on my desk. Yet another poster to adhorn my living room walls

Ste, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

Who will get 100% first?

kv_nol, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

How does the soundtrack compare with the original VC one? Is there much (any) overlap? I'm hoping you're going to say "it's just as fantastic, and there's no overlap at all!".

JimD, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

this afternoon i played a mission, jumping from a car playing genesis's 'turn it on', into a hovercraft playing phil collins' 'in the air tonight'.

it's just as fantastic, and there's no overlap at all!

stevie, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

I really hope in GTA IV the character has a walkman so you don't need to channel surf! I always turn off the radios because it does my head in. For a while though I was driving around in GTA:SA listening to SF:UR trying to catch Mr Fingers. It was totally worth it.

kv_nol, Thursday, 22 March 2007 10:49 (eighteen years ago)

and I'm loving this! Was late to bed last night, as I kinda knew I would be, playing this. Sooo many bike jumps.

I really like these 'Stories' games using the same maps, because they get to open up some of the disappointingly unused areas of the previous games. Makes the cities feel more complete for me.

It would be well worth Rockstar making another game based in San Andreas as the map was just amazingly huge and so much was never touched in the main missions.

Ste, Thursday, 22 March 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

Shut up! I have guests arriving for wknd so cannot play this until next week!

I cannot wait! Also yay to not learning a new map!

kv_nol, Thursday, 22 March 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

Shut up! I have a three-week old newborn to care for so cannot play this until it comes in two-player mode!

I cannot wait!

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 22 March 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

OMG like shut up!

Wait, you're waiting until Beeps can play? That's some good fathering!

kv_nol, Sunday, 25 March 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

Although loving this, and spent the majority of my weekend playing it, my copy seems to have come with a really annoying bug of the game having no traffic at a lot of the time.

Other than that it's pretty good, lots and lots of side missions. I'm managed over 40 percent so far.

The Beach Patrol mission is different to the one on the PSP !

Ste, Monday, 26 March 2007 10:08 (eighteen years ago)

Although loving this, and spent the majority of my weekend playing it, my copy seems to have come with a really annoying bug of the game having no traffic at a lot of the time.

on PSP or PS2? my PSP version of this has been lacking traffic the last couple of days, which i guiltily attributed to having used a couple of cheats and then saved.

stevie, Monday, 26 March 2007 10:30 (eighteen years ago)

ps ste i am not accusing you of cheats

stevie, Monday, 26 March 2007 10:31 (eighteen years ago)

It's on the PS2 version, and really came noticable once I'd opened up the second island.

Ste, Monday, 26 March 2007 12:43 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, you're waiting until Beeps can play? That's some good fathering!

Well, I don't want to repeat the experience of a friend of mine who had his daughter announce one day that "Officer Tenpenny is a fuckin' asshole!", but yeah. Looking forward to it one day.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 26 March 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

That daughter spoke the truth though. Is that so wrong?

kv_nol, Monday, 26 March 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

He might be one of my least-favorite characters!

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 26 March 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

He had a nice van though, shame you can't get it back later in the game. Or can you?

One thing great about VCS on the PS2 is the Trails option is gorgeous. I implore you to keep it switched on, for the night time graphics at least. It's slightly over the top compared to the last VC game but I think it looks pretty fab.

And OMFG the mission where I have to protect Lance and then fight at M's mansion is doing my head in!

Ste, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 09:26 (eighteen years ago)

Is it too late to ask for spoilers to be marked? [/prissy] At the very very very beginning the best way to get M4 ammo is to kill some soldiers in your first base I find. I'm 0.08% done already. Watch out Ste, here I come. I've only had it an hour and whoever said it's great reusing old maps so OTM! Was chatting to flatmate last night trying to find weapons, so few lying around :( Also when I saw tank at first I thought: Hello vigilante! Sadly no, unavailable.

kv_nol, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 10:33 (eighteen years ago)

i hope this isn't a spoiler - later on, vigilante tank missions are available (or were at least on psp)

stevie, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

Score! Thanks Stevie.

kv_nol, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

So excited, going home to play this all evening!!!!

kv_nol, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

Two things I am loving: Return of auto-aim and SPOILER that I'll probably get to kill Marty later. SPOILER. Firing range impossible without mouse :(

kv_nol, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 08:22 (eighteen years ago)

I still haven't tried that firing range yet.

There are sooo many missions on this game, are there more than the original VC you think?

Ste, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 08:31 (eighteen years ago)

Firing range impossible without mouse :(
its tricky - i got to the final round last night, but didn't quite beat it.

stevie, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 09:02 (eighteen years ago)

Just something, it's probably nothing. Has anyone noticed the small yellow poster round the back of the stadium, it's quite close to the corner as you drive around to the left of the rear car park. It's seems to be a doodle of a face with the lettering "#6" on. Anyone know what this is about ?

I'll get a pic at lunchtime.

Ste, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 10:42 (eighteen years ago)

Ste I want to live close to work as well to go back and play this. Last night I didn't do that many missions, I was too busy tooling up!

I think this time I will try to do the vigilante, medic and fire missions asap. They'll have to be done at some point, may as well get them out of the way now. Really not looking forwards to doing the fire house without mouse.

It wouldn't surprise me if there were more missions, they could spend their time developing them rather than the map.

I went back to barracks after they took my guns. Got my M4 back (aka killed more of them) and hightailed it to Pay N Spray, first missions so much easier with bigger guns (WEAPON SPOILER: there's also a stubby pump action near the first safehouse [I'm presuming there are more] near the Marty missions. Armor is also nearby. These two discoveries have made life so much better!)SPOILER

kv_nol, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 11:23 (eighteen years ago)

and here it is...

Ste, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 12:36 (eighteen years ago)

Put your 8 smiley face B on top of #6. Couldn't be clearer man!

kv_nol, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)

i think the 8 and b are 'thumbs up' style hands, no?

stevie, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 12:39 (eighteen years ago)

a lot can happen in a lunchtime. Manged to get myself free Re-Sprays from now on, but not telling you how. yuk yuk.

Stubby shotgun is cool, I use it a lot myself and the AK (after also having found out where you can get it for nothing) SPOILER(and also now that i got the hidden package count that spawns it at my safe house)

Ste, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 12:43 (eighteen years ago)

The poster is very similar to the hidden poster in Liberty City Stories in the hidden ally. It has the same doodley face with "You just can't get enough of this alley can you" written on it.

But this one isn't hidden at all.

Ste, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

Think I've managed to uncover about 27 side missions so far, including car and boat impound missions and not including Rampages.

One thing annoying me is the fact it steals your vehicle when you start a mission, half the fun is choosing your own ride for a new task.

On the plus side I love it when it rains!

Ste, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 13:28 (eighteen years ago)

a lot can happen in a lunchtime. Manged to get myself free Re-Sprays from now on, but not telling you how. yuk yuk.

Bastard!

I'm not going for hidden packages until I have sniper, is that sensible or is there a way that I'm missing of shooting those balloons without spraying hundreds of bullets?

One thing that irritates me about all the side missions etc. is that I really like to save after a mission, if I fail a mission at any time I just reload it. Seriously, I hate all that "attempted" bullcrap messing up my stats! Same if I'm arrested or hospitalized. [as a side note that really fucked up my levelling up in SA as I was doing very little driving on the missions seeing as I knew where to go after repeated attempts etc] So it really bugs me that I finish a mission, hop in to a car and next thing: Side mission or rampage! NOOOO! I have to load up pre mission and start over in case I don't do the rampage or thing successfully.

That poster means nothing to me. Google?

kv_nol, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

wise move waiting for sniper rifle I think.

if you press the R3 button twice it cancels a side mission, will this show up as attempted on your stats ?

Ste, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

Probably. I must try that actually and see to save myself future grief.

I have been looking for a sniper rifle with no joy! Also why does no one carry any money? HOW MANY PEOPLE MUST I KILL TO BUY THINGS???

kv_nol, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

I've noticed money is more worthy in these Stories missions, and thus rarer. It was the same with LCS.

Well I googled the smiley faces thing but nobody has an full explanation, only that there seeme to be 10 in VCS in all (I managed to avoid all the spoiler talk of where they were). Can't collect them, and don't think you can do anything with them other than just find them.

Reminds me of the old Buster comic and the Cliffhanger story, there was always the same items hidden in the strip every week. Like a picture of a warthog. Just for fun.

Ste, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

I could only find a sniper rifle on the second island

Ste, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

So how have you been getting the hidden packages then?

kv_nol, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

ak is not bad for a slight zoom in, but had to wait until second island sniper rifle to get most of them. Got about 20 without it.

Ste, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

When you say zoom in (please forgive obtuseness) does that mean that when you auto-aim you can see down the sights and move the rifle freely?

kv_nol, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

hidden packages??

stevie, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

yes, it seems to zoom in slightly when you aim with the AK, giving a little sniper ability. not much mind.

not all the balloons are sniper fodder. There's a few down on ground level. or even machine gun material.

Ste, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

totally struggling finding those balloons. keep getting side tracked with jumps.

Ste, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

I use a map. There's no way I could keep track of them all, and some of them are just too hidden.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

I really need to start up this game again. I find all my motivation goes once I finish the story missions in any GTA. Such a waste, I know.

kv_nol, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 08:29 (eighteen years ago)

I'm leaving the final mission until I've completed all my side missions and what not.

I think I have about 10 more balloons to find, they seemed easy at first - the redness stood out quite a lot.

Ste, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 09:21 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha, but i'm not a girl!

stevie, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

Final mission is alright iirc. Gave up on Balloons. Also Rampages, I tried one, remembered why I hated them and stopped. I am grumpy guts obv.

kv_nol, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry about that, stevie. I thought you were Dutch. After I posted that, I thought, wait, there might be more than one user named steve here.

I'm on the Unique Jumps right now. Also buying up properties and running drugs. I need to get fireproof before I do any rampages. I have a really nasty habit of setting myself on fire with my molatov cocktails.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

that's alright... nathalie also posts as stevienixed, and i have no problem whatsoever being mistaken for her.

i was big on the business building too. hope some form of that is in GTAIV

stevie, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

Is there any rhyme or reason to which types of properties you build? I mean, do I need to create an equal percentage of them all, or can I make 90% Loan shark and 10% on the rest?

You should see my three-month old daughter's eyes light up when I do a unique jump. Everything's going fast then all of a sudden this graceful slow-motion ballet of digital motorcycle air. It's kind of weird that she's watching it all, but I don't think she was going to grow up to be Laura Ingalls Wilder anyway.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

i don't think so... i liked to keep an even spread, but slanted towards the ones that paid best.

stevie, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks. Tell Ophelia I said hi.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think she was going to grow up to be Laura Ingalls Wilder anyway.

You just wanted to make sure!

I just made businesses that paid more. I'm sure there's an enterprising 10 year old out there that has made a walkthrough giving the pros and cons. Those children scare me, the level of obsession.

Fireproof tip: at the airport well off into the corner there is a fire engine. Most of it's early missions all happen in the airport so if you stop and start you shouldn't have to venture out too often.

I never did get my tank :(

Ste, Monday, 11 June 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

I completed all the Turismo races in first place but it appears to have given me nothing !

Ste, Monday, 11 June 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

played a marathon session tonight, but only found a further 3 balloons.

twatted the empire gangs tho, great fun!

Ste, Monday, 11 June 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

does anyone else get these traffic bugs:

no traffic at all until reset ps2, might be the odd taxi or cop cars if you have a wanted level. It seems to come about after I try the vehicle rampage on Starfish island.

traffic stops in the middle of the road. I don't know if this is some problem with dodgy traffic light programming.

random taxi drives itself into walls under bridge that goes over to Prawn island

Ste, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

I've not noticed them. I tend to be bombing along anyway. Do you get anything special for all the Empire sites?

kv_nol, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

not got them all quite yet, still a couple of biker abodes to 'do over'

not sure if what you get for them

Ste, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

The biker ones are so great after. The Sharks all have AKs and there are 4 of them in a jeep. Nightmare after each one.

kv_nol, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

i've 'settled' my shark attacks with a nice distance sniper strategy. those 4-in-a-jeep visits were nasty.

luckily my henchmen were also packing AK's on some occasions, and that meant instant flaming jeep for a lot of the sharks.

Ste, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

once you own all businesses, you will cease getting hassle from competitors (i think). i noticed the lack of traffic sometimes, but i chalked that up to a 'cheat' i'd used on my saved game. that showed me.

stevie, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

It was a sad day when the game knew you were using a cheat :( That's only on the smuggling businesses they get AKs, the rest of the time they're nipples on a bull. Useless in other words.

kv_nol, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

I was defending a business on the west island, right on the main strip down the block where Maria lived. Fucking bikers would drive right by and head toward downtown. I'd have to just stand there and wait for them to come back. I tried to go after them once, but the caption at the bottom said I had to get back to the location in fifteen seconds. Those fuckers would go all the way to the pizza place on the west island and then turn around and come back. FUCK.

You know how sometimes the bikers will come out of nowhere to ambush you, usually right after you defend an empire? I had a pair try that on me while I was standing on one of the docks and they materialized in the water. Fortunately for me, bikers can't swim.

I also had a pair of bikers dissolve into the sidewalk outside the hideout by the amusement park. Lot of bugs around that place.

I've got just one more Unique Jump to fufill and it's a bitch. You have to go across three (or four) rooftops behind the old VC hotel on the east island, hit the ramp, and completely go over the next building. I can never summon enough speed for it, even though if I "leaned" any more forward, my head would scrape the front tire.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

(pizza place on EAST island.)

yeah, i think that's definitely a glitch. i had that happen a lot.

stevie, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

even though if I "leaned" any more forward, my head would scrape the front tire

You probably already know this, but you know you're supposed to only lean far enough that your head ducks? If you push too far then your guy stands up like he's going to bunnyhop or something... not very aerodynamic. you gotta lean so he hides behind the glass, and no further! sorry if this was a useless tip.

Will M., Tuesday, 12 June 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

okay, wtf. I didn't know that you could get "flaming" stunts if you do the usual flips and rotations in vehicles whilst they're burning.

Ste, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 10:03 (eighteen years ago)

Oh wow. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbpypLg08ik bad quality but still v cool!

kv_nol, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 10:42 (eighteen years ago)

okay, wtf. I didn't know that you could get "flaming" stunts if you do the usual flips and rotations in vehicles whilst they're burning.

Learned that one the hard way actually. One of the few times that I allowed myself to die, and then I bought back all my weapons. I was too busy staring at the caption back at the accident when the car blew up and killed me.

I do love the different "bribes" you can buy in this game since after awhile, money's not really an object anyway.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

I like keeping my stats pure though :(

kv_nol, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

Found a weird glitch today. Landed my helicopter next to a wall downtown and caught trapped in this tunnel:

There were Sharks shooting at me, and yet, I was trapped with no way out.

I did figure out one way to shoot at 'em though.

**SPOILER SPOILER**

The 'Rush' Mission in the Linerunner truck. I completed this last night after days of frustration. My tip? Get a three or four star wanted level, it's a lot easier when the cars come to you

The only hitch is that you have to ride out the time so try not to get too battered, or hide somewhere.

Ste, Sunday, 1 July 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

I just started playing this in anticipation of GTA4! Much, much better than I imagined. It's nice to be able to drive around Vice City without being frustrated by not being able to do things I got used to in San Andreas but seemed perfectly content with not being able to do the first time around.

Also, it's got that unpredictability of San Andreas plus more. Those crazy pedestrians wiggling about all over the place trying to avoid ending up underneath my car! Drivers plowing into me at high speed as I'm crossing the road! Massive jumps that seem to pop up over the horizon at just the right time! Perfect.

melton mowbray, Saturday, 21 July 2007 06:18 (eighteen years ago)

cool PP, is that on the ferris wheel?

how did you get there?

Ste, Monday, 23 July 2007 09:27 (eighteen years ago)

Man I need to go back and do more of this game. Not just yet methinks... Still have Shadow of the Colussus to finish...

kv_nol, Monday, 23 July 2007 10:59 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

I may be the last person to know this, but I found out you can use the sniper rifle from indoors. I was playing around on this last night trying to get a 6 star wanted level so I could steal a Rhino so I holed up in the Clymenus Suite apartment & was sniping off the roof, blowing up helicopters etc, then running back inside to rejuvenate my health. Inside I tried sniping at the cops below & I could shoot through the window but was totally protected from them firing at me. Didn't get the Rhino in the end, as I went out to nab it I got busted :-(

Another humorous thing while I was on the roof - I was over the water side, facing the golf course & all these cop cars kept driving over the golf course straight into the canal - after about 20 or so I got bored of picking them off & went back to the street side. Amused me no end...

Ok after seeing this stuff for years, but never having actually played it, I finally got GTA: Vice City last night, and yeah I'm in heaven, what a cool sandbox game.

I'm such a noob at this tho. I have no idea how to make money or anything. I'm guessing i need to rob a gun store or something...?

just do missions - those are denoted by the little "letter landmarks" on your map. after a while they'll start giving you option stuff to do like deliver pizzas or give taxi rides, but the money you make off the main missions - the story - usually suffice enough. plus, the only things you can really buy are weapons and you get plenty of those just via doing actual missions are scavenging off dead dudes.

if you find the hidden items, for every 10 you find, a new weapon becomes freely available at your safe house.

OK but im supposed to get clothes and have 0 money.

LOL I just looked up a walkthrough and read this

If you've never played a PC game like "Vice City" before, I recommend it, if you don't mind some colorful language. It's the 1st one I ever played all the way through

Damn this game is fun, and the soundtrack is occasionally super awesome. Don Henley & Roxy Music, Michael Jackson & Judas Priest. All so awesome.

It occurred to me that this game actually TEACHES you things and one of the things it teaches you is that shooting cops, killing random people, causing havoc in general, is detrimental to your progress in a very real way. So many missions just get more and more difficult when you get a warning level. Or maybe you need a car in the best condition possible for a mission -- you'll need to go out of your way to make sure you drive reasonably sane on the way to your destination.

It's cool that it can be sandbox anarchy and the fact that that stuff is so fun and stylized and hyper-real sort of makes it even more of an effort NOT to mess things up when you're trying to win the game.
