The next gen DS - what could be improved?

any ideas how nintendo could improve their handheld?
i'd like to see some internal flash memory and a Virtual Gameboy, where you could download gameboy, gameboy colour, gamegear, neogeo etc etc. games via wifi, and buy with wii points (probably renamed star points or something). as nintendo love selling us the same games again & again i'm sure they wouldn't mind.

THREE SCREENS

abanana, Thursday, 22 March 2007 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

and then the sony psp people go, "Fuck everything, we're going with 6 screens"

abanana, Thursday, 22 March 2007 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

Make it cheaper so I can buy one without being nagged at by the +1 :(

vgb would be awesome!

also:

support for wireless beyond WEP

Why stop at only allowing virtual handheld games?

Anything I buy on the Wii (SNES, NG, 64, etc) can be transferred to my new DS. YES SIR. I like.

If they put in an internal memory they could easily sell new DS games over wifi too. The ones that are coming out now are only 30-100 mb.

Easy booting of homebrew software ( ok, the implied condoning of piracy means Nintendo would never go for this but hey)

Also decent sound?

The difference doesn't look like much. But I like the idea of an sd slot and the download games a lot... if they can play of the sd card... and the selction is decent

if they can play OFF the sd card... and the SELECTION is decent. Could make up for no gba slot

I dig the SD slot/downloadable games too, as well as the bigger screens. I never upgraded to the Lite, so when this comes out in the US I'll probably finally break down and buy a DS (my current system is borrowed). I hope they finally put in WPA support.

But, on the other hand... I'm really unsatisfied with all these mobile convergence platforms, like the gaming portion of the iPhone/iPod Touch. Sure you can use this as a portable music player with an SD card, but it's going to crap compared to an iPod. The camera is pathetic - my five-year-old camera phone could do 1.3 megapixels, vs the 0.3 of this (and two cameras? why?) but it's likely going to be a Game Boy Camera-type thing for Pictochat and other silliness. Also, with the removal of the GBA slot, they kind of just told the Daigasso and Guitar Hero guys to screw themselves. Too bad that Rumble Pak didn't get more use!

Should be interesting later today, when we see how many of these news items were mistranslated. But those demo videos with all the titles, both for the DS and Wii, look promising. Too bad they didn't show them at E3!

Nhex, Thursday, 2 October 2008 08:18 (seventeen years ago)

Yep, WPA is the only thing which might convince me to buy this, none of the other improvements seem particularly necessary to me.

JimD, Thursday, 2 October 2008 09:30 (seventeen years ago)

some places reporting that the outer camera is 3MP and the inner 0.3MP. so the outer one is for taking pictures and the inner one maybe for some sort of voice chat app?

zappi, Thursday, 2 October 2008 11:16 (seventeen years ago)

hmm, maybe not.

zappi, Thursday, 2 October 2008 11:34 (seventeen years ago)

i need a new DS anyway, my touch screen is kinda fucked up (always off by a couple of MM, re-calibrating doesnt work). everything else is gravy.

s1ocki, Thursday, 2 October 2008 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

but ya, i couldnt care less about using it as an ipod or camera

s1ocki, Thursday, 2 October 2008 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

Wow, so glad i bought a DS Lite one fucking week ago.

circa1916, Thursday, 2 October 2008 18:57 (seventeen years ago)

Oh wait, no GBA slot? I'm cool then.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime revealed that the iteration on their popular handheld will not make its way to stateside until "well into 2009."

Fils-Aime was surprisingly straight-forward about Nintendo's reason for this decision, which basically amounted to: They know they can sell more of the currently offered DS Lites. --1up

Ha, Reggie! That's a long wait, though. I'm pretty sure they already announced the Europe release for next spring, so it could be a longer wait for us in the States.

Nhex, Thursday, 2 October 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

fuck you reggie, I was probably going to buy a ds lite in the near future, now I won't, because I don't want another device that's crippled out of the box.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 2 October 2008 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

I repeat fuck you reggie

El Tomboto, Thursday, 2 October 2008 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

Hey, he could have just as easily lied and said there wasn't enough production capability, or some other lame excuse. Besides, knowing Nintendo, the early downloadable stuff will suck anyway. Maybe it'll bring the DS Lite prices down to a temptable point. The main shitty thing is, if it takes all the way to late '09 to get it to us, it might only be a year to 18 months later that we get the real successor to the DS.

Circa: yeah, I wouldn't regret it much. The system as it is has a billion great games to play on it right now.

Nhex, Friday, 3 October 2008 00:12 (seventeen years ago)

Just got a DS Lite last Sunday, and reserved the Korg DS-10!

But the fact that the music player on the DSi has pitch/tempo control leads me to believe that there will be some form of DJ software coming out for it.
