It's a harvest, harvest, harvest moon: HARVEST MOON

The farming game that's been around forever & a day. DO YOU LIKE IT?

I love the game, but it has two problems. One: the days pass by way too quickly. Two: the directional controls in the Game Cube ones are totally weak, it sometimes takes 30 seconds to aim your hoe/watering can/whatevs at the right square, or to stand at the exact portion of the cow that will allow you to milk it.

My favorite was the relatively simple one for the PS1. I am trying out Magical Melody and finding it somewhat annoying: it's impossible to get food for the first few days because the plants you find around to eat never regrow. Also, I cannot figure out how to cook my fish. COnsequently I have to sleep all the time & have very little energy to work on my crops. Then I am sure I will eat all my profits once they finish growing. I need to buy CHICKENS, that's where the easy money is!

I find this game absolutely engrossing, but it always takes me abt 20 of the games days to figure out all the weird new controls (esp w/Magical Melody), and then I have to restart a new record so I'm not completely behind.

I liked the hubbub when the 1st GC game came out: if you preordered at EB, you got a free cow!

I hope that is a Star Cow! Pre-orderers deserve the best quality milk.

Abbott your first post made me really want to play this game for some reason. Is Magical Melody the DS version? Is it difficult?

It is the GameCube version...they have one for the DS that has linkup abilities to the gamecube, tho I've never played it.

The game is never really hard or easy, it just gets me tunnel visioned on the world of adorable Japanese farmlife. "Must harvest enough eggs for egg festival!" You also get to woo various town members of the opposite sex by presenting them with their favorite foods and spying in their diaries to find out how much they like you. It's sort of like Animal Crossing with a lot more exciting manual labor.

Oh ok... I am a sucker for Animal Crossing but with games like The Sims/Sim City I tend to get flustered and give up when the going gets tough. I will have to try this out.

I made a start on the DS version, it's the fist one I've played since the Gameboy Color edition about 8 years ago. Felt fiddly, and it gave me a huge town to explore without telling me much about what I was supposed to be doing there, so I got a bit lost and bored and drifted away from it. Might go back to it though, and try the Abbott "play for a while then restart once it makes sense" strategy.

I have a copy for the GC, but don't have a memory card with enough 'slots' (one was supposed to come with game but second-hand game purchaser beware - see also my special animal crossing mystery gift which wz supposed to come w/ memory card, but I got bog standard generic one). I really should buy a memory card. I know! I KNOW!

one year passes...

I just played Harvest Moon on SNES for 6 hours straight. I have 4 chickens and two cows (Jane and Bev). I have impressed Eve at the Harvest Festival.

I want to die.

Abbott's post above reminded me of how simplified the SNES version is. I've played the PS2 and GBA versions, and both of them are waaaaaaaay more complex than this one. In some ways the simplicity is nice (I never was a big fan of gathering up ingredients and experimenting with new dishes, but I'm already at the point where all I'm basically doing is trying to woo a village girl, make my house bigger, and buy more cows and chickens.
