2097, not because it's necessarily the best but because it's solely responsible for getting me into console gaming.

Pope Gay Homo Awful House Music (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 January 2009 23:39 (sixteen years ago) link

Also because of the bazillion glorious hours of my life it consumed.

Pope Gay Homo Awful House Music (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 1 January 2009 23:39 (sixteen years ago) link

2097 cause you finally didn't stop when you clipped the sides; never played HD but I'm sure it's probably better

How does a thread about WIPEOUT sink with only one comment??

2097 for me too, one of the first things I played on psx and, not to get religious about it, but yes it was fun times

sonderangerbot, Sunday, 4 January 2009 21:56 (sixteen years ago) link

2097/XL for the soundtrack alone.

Eric H., Sunday, 4 January 2009 21:57 (sixteen years ago) link

That soundtrack is indeed magnificent. I still listen to it regularly.

Fusion Ha Ha

yeah maybe but it introduced Zone Mode which is the most intense pure focussed jedi zen gaming experience of all time.

Only one I haven't played is the original - only played HD once though ;_; ;_; ;_;. Think I'm gonna go for Wip3out; sure 2097 was rockin' good times but 3 had some top music too (Know Where to Run still gives me flashbacks to the game whenever I hear it), great circuits, the minimal design was fabulous, and it was the first one to use the analogue controller.

ledge, Sunday, 4 January 2009 23:12 (sixteen years ago) link

And it had a two player split-screen mode.

ledge, Sunday, 4 January 2009 23:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Yes! And 3se included loads of classic tracks.

I was desperate for analogue control until I played 3. Digital all the way now, even with Pure & Pulse.

Oh, and the original is a bit arse. Every time you touch a wall you stop (as mentioned upthread), which is only ever thoroughly annoying.

if some1 could fills me in i would like it (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 4 January 2009 23:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Just been youtubing to remind myself of the tracks. It's been much too long, I need to play this shit again. Some of the 2097 tracks look a bit samey but Sagamartha (snowy mountains) and Valparaiso (Chilean jungle) were both awesome. Most of the wip3out vids are very dark and 3rd person unfortunately, but I remember that Manor Top was my all-time fave of all time - fantastic crashing right-angle turns.

Digital all the way now, even with Pure & Pulse.

well the psp analogue stick is a bit iffy.. even so, i suspect this is nuts.

ledge, Sunday, 4 January 2009 23:55 (sixteen years ago) link

The first one is pretty much umplayable today - very primitive. 2097/XL holds up okay though. I really want Pulse, but keep waiting for them to release it downloadable over here (would prefer not to use a umd). Love having Pure on the memory stick - for me it gets impossibly difficult around the halfway mark, though. Love zone mode the most. I think HD gets the game so right, it feels and looks perfect, but I wish there was a little more content, some new tracks or something. Would pay for new tracks / DLC.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 5 January 2009 07:34 (sixteen years ago) link

on front bumper? do you mean just the bonnet showing?

cozwn, Monday, 5 January 2009 13:12 (sixteen years ago) link

no i mean on the front bumper (yes it is a 'wtf?!' option). GRID also handily sticks the front bumper into the in-car view whether you like it or not.

I just ordered 3 since I'd never played it (or can't remember playing it) and this thread made me feel kind of guilty. I also gave in and picked up Pulse this week - have yet to have time to play a ton, but it seems amazing. It's definitely an improvement over Pure, which I already liked a lot (the graphics are better / the control seems slightly smoother). Had a few online races too, which worked surprisingly great.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 8 January 2009 05:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Just had another go at Wip3out. Problems that make it shithouse:

- Graphic design of the tracks is such that you can't see where the track is half the time, and consequently you go into loads of walls and die
- Graphic design of the HUD is such that you can't properly see what weapon you've got, what your position is &c.
- Dopey bitch who announces WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING all the time doesn't actually say WHAT she's warning you about (e.g. mines, plasma, quake, rockets, missiles), so you've nfi what to look for and end up getting hit anyway
- Aforementioned dopey bitch says DISENGAGING far too often to be useful, leaving you thinking 'oh, I must be in autopilot then' and consequently smashing into walls
- Despite the presence of a weapon in the HUD, you can't use it while another weapon is in use, which leaves you frantically pressing buttons and consequently smashing into walls

three weeks pass...

Ok I have a new hueg tv and have busted these out again. 2097 and 3 really stand the test of time. I don't get all your probs with 3 though, AA. The tracks are fine, maybe even better than 2097. The HUD is kinda less than clear, but the only thing I really couldn't see ever at all was lap number. 'WARNING' is a bit annoying but the only thing you can ever really try to avoid is mines so hey ho. For the overall design, and for analogue control, I gotta give the edge to 3.

But yes yer right, Fusion is laughably bad, don't think I realised at the time quite how woeful it was. It's like they chucked everything out the window and tried to copy Fzero for some unaccountable reason.

how's liverpool for industry jobs? these folks have somewhere to go after this? is it condusive to starting an indie dev there?

i hope they can keep making great stuff, i haven't bought or played a wipeout game in ages due to the sony thing though

#1 Thwartstop Prospect (Will M.), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 15:14 (twelve years ago) link

most of them will probably get jobs elsewhere, there's Evolution Studios (Motorstorm) nearby in Runcorn, also owned by Sony.
Tory party doing away with tax breaks for UK developers probably didn't help :/
Supposedly they were already developing a Wipeout game for the next Playstation console before being canned.
