Remember Warlords? This is a sorta sequel, only a mix of puzzle & rpg. The gameplay is essentially Bejeweled, but there's enough rpg stats & empire building to get you HOOKED. Addicting as fuck.

Demo here for PC. Full game's only available for DS & PSP so far, the bastards. Good luck finding a copy, since the game is apparently sold out everywhere.

Neat interview with the creators

Yes! I read about this, and fancied it lots. Still trying to find myself a (cough) .nds file somewhere.

Warlords like the Amiga game?

This Warlords series

kingfish, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

AWWWW DAMN I LOVED THAT GAME. I would always be the Selentines or the Orcs of Kor (I didn't even know what an orc was at that age... I played dem shits young)

Will M., Tuesday, 27 March 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks for recommending this game, it looks right up my alley.

abanana, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

Downloading demo as soon as I get home today.
The penny arcade guys be going crazy over this.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

I hate the name, tho, accurate as it may be. Sounds way too bargain bin/shovelware/budget title, like you'd find it as a point-of-purchase thing for $7.99.

Which would rule, actually, since the game cost 4x that.

But the title is as generic as "Quest 64, " without a really overt clue that this is part of the Warlords line(sorta).

kingfish, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

that cover sure doesn't help either.

is there a lot of this "shovelware" on the DS? I know a friend of mine picked up a game called "Sprung" from wal-mart for 99 cents (didn't even have a DS yet, iirc), but i've never heard of it outside of that.

Will M., Tuesday, 27 March 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

Right, got this, and I've been playing it for the last 9 hours. It's nothing like warlords (though warlords ds is also in development). It's GREAT. It's basically zoo keeper rpg. Except the puzzling is turn based, which actually works really well. The biggest difference it makes to the dynamic of the game is that when you get four or five in a row, you get an extra turn, so looking for the longer links becomes your main priority. And when there aren't any, you find youself trying to make a move which won't leave anything too dangerous behind for whoever you're fighting. There's still qite a bit of luck in there, but the strategies for different enemies are surprisingly diverse. Like, the troll can regenerate health points if he gets enough blue magic, so in his levels you need to concentrate more on grabbing all the blues before he does than on actually attacking him. And sometimes the strategies you need to use are much less obvious, and need quite a bit of figuring out, and it's all really good fun. Yay!

JimD, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

i am having fun trying to imagine just what the hell you do in this game!

s1ocki, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 23:58 (eighteen years ago)

OMG addictive must go buy for ds. stopping now tho'.
Bejeweled RPG says it all.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 04:28 (eighteen years ago)

Forgot to mention, this game is HARD. It doesn't become a second-nature, background processing task the way most puzzlers do after 5 or 6 hours play...you really do need to keep concentrating. And at the moment a two-headed orc is repeatedly kicking my arse, no matter how much I pay attention.

JimD, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

Urrrrgh I dunno how I feel about this game. Visually, it is one of the ugliest games I've seen on the DS (It's no R4yman Raving Rabbids, sorry Ubisoft guys, but still). The AI is a pile of jerkpaste (wtf perfect moves + insanely prescient about what's going to fall onto the screen). And the classes definitely don't feel equal (it took 4 tries to beat the "young knight" at the beginning with my druid, but only 1 try with my wizard). I think I like Meteos Disney more :/

Will M., Wednesday, 28 March 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

This was developed in Melbourne. Word has it that a different company ported the game to DS, which is why it could feel "off".

The enemy getting endless combos is fucking annoying; i counted a chain of 10+ yesterday.

Have yet to try Meteos Disney. Thinking about it.

kingfish, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

Have you played the first Meteos? because it feels like a pretty big step in the correct direction from that, and that was already fun. "Meteos: Disney Magic" is the full name, I couldn't remember it so I had to look it up. Meteos Disney sounded really weird to me.

Will M., Wednesday, 28 March 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

Amazong'd.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

Yup, i have the first meteos. Kinda fun, kinda weird design. the "unlock a planet" feature can get annoying.

kingfish, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

I bought a DS on ebay the other day, along with Mario Kart.

Puzzle Quest will probably be my next purchase, when I finish Mario Kart. It reminds me a little bit of a free mmorpg puzzle rpg called Puzzle Pirates. Anyone ever play that? It was pretty fun, except that it got to the point where you had to buy some "pieces of eight" (with real money, unfortunately) if you wanted to be competitive.

Z S, Thursday, 29 March 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

check it out: how's this for an April Fool's day joke

Also, so many folks were pissed at the suspected AI cheating that one of the coders finally posted on their forums that no such cheat routines exist, mainly cuz he was too lazy to program them. Take that for what it's worth, i guess.

kingfish, Monday, 2 April 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=13306

PQ was the highest selling DS game in March for North America, and #3 for the PSP.

I've played about 3-4 characters thru on the demo and it's getting stale. After finally getting a mount and a full citadel, there aint all that much to do, even after seigeing all the cities.

kingfish, Monday, 2 April 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

i have just started playing this and it is v. addictive. i've never played bejewelled before so i am fairly crap, but i can see this being fun for quite a long time

webber, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 04:08 (eighteen years ago)

aw, hell yeah, just got my copy. Goodbye subway boredom and weekend as well?

forksclovetofu, Friday, 6 April 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

I'm still waiting on my copy to arrive from Amazon. It's backordered up the yin yang.

I haven't played very much Bejeweled before. I have a demo on my phone, but it only lets me play for about 30 seconds before quitting. I suppose I should beef up my Bejeweled skills.

Z S, Friday, 6 April 2007 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

The demo wouldn't let me level my druid past 7, so I challenged myself to some Instant Action games. Try beating the citadel...very challenging and no reward :)

BLASTOCYST, Friday, 6 April 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

I want to be home playing this instead of listening to wonderful music.

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 7 April 2007 02:21 (eighteen years ago)

you have to be able to build enough stuff to let you siege cities, that's where the fun begins.

kingfish, Saturday, 7 April 2007 07:50 (eighteen years ago)

this game is pretty addictive!

meteos disney is super fun but it does hit a wall of INSANE hardness.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

ps how do you "capture" dudes in this?

s1ocki, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

you have to buy/build stuff in your citadel, then encounter the monster like 3 times or something.

at one point, my druid was riding around on a giant rat.

kingfish, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

that's what she said

s1ocki, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

OMG this is crack.
Girlfriend got into it and will not stop playing so that I can not stop playing. DS hasn't gotten this kinda workout since New Mario.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, it finally came in the mail!

I've been playing this for a few days, and I'm totally addicted. I do wish there was a way to "test drive" other character classes, though. By that I mean I wish that you could do an exhibition style match where you pick your class and level, and a few spells, and play against a similarly skilled computer, to see what it's like to play as the other classes.

I picked knight at the beginning, and I'm wondering how different the experience is with other classes.

Z S, Thursday, 12 April 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

I am playing with a Wizard, and it has been kicking arse from the beginning. If you pump fire mastery with the spells it gets pretty early on you can generally crush people in a few turns.

webber, Friday, 13 April 2007 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

a few turns? Jeez, right now I'm at level 12 or so and it's still taking me many, many moves to beat anyone at all.

Z S, Friday, 13 April 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

Well, a few moves after you get enough mana to be able to use multiple spells.

webber, Saturday, 14 April 2007 12:56 (eighteen years ago)

Coming to Xbox Live Arcade.

abanana, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 00:52 (eighteen years ago)

girlfriend is now level 51.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 02:20 (eighteen years ago)

I lie. She's 50 and you can't get higher apparently.
She just beat it.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 7 May 2007 05:46 (eighteen years ago)

I'm convinced this is not available in stores.

kingfish, Monday, 7 May 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

Super Collapse 3 is coming out soon, it's better IMO and will have WAY less hype behind it, just hold out for that (assuming they didn't butcher the port to DS)

Will M., Monday, 7 May 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

At level 26 myself and it's finally gotten too easy. I can sorta half-ass my way through all the fights now.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 7 May 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

Yep, same here, actually (lev 26 and too easy). It's too bad I don't know anyone with a copy. I'd love to battle someone.

Z S, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 00:30 (eighteen years ago)

i'm obsessed with this at the moment, even though there seems to be a lot of luck involved with combos etc. it makes a change to play a game though that can consistently kick my ass, games these days are too easy, why when i were a lad it were all fields round here etc etc
(i'm only at level 15 or so)

zappi, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i'm on level 31. i don't really get the "too hard" complaints cuz i'm kicking all sorts of ass.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

This has actually dethroned Clubhouse Games as the game perpetually in my DS during bus rides, although with SimCity DS on the horizon God only knows how long that'll last

jamescobo, Sunday, 27 May 2007 09:03 (eighteen years ago)

I still play it when I want to go to sleep. Generally do two or three battles and zonk out midway through the last one. It's an excellent soporific.

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 27 May 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

I'm still enjoying it, but I'm ready for it to be over. I'm wondering how close I am to finishing.

I'm at a part of the story where I'm going back and forth between the Ice Dragon and Fire Dragon cities, and they keep asking me to return what the other dragon has stolen...does anyone know what I'm talking about, or how far along I am? I just bought the Phoenix Wright sequel today, and I'm anxious to get started.

Z S, Monday, 28 May 2007 04:25 (eighteen years ago)

I'd say you're about two thirds to three quarters of the way through the game. There's a little bit more to go, but it's pretty much more of the same.

webber, Thursday, 31 May 2007 11:45 (eighteen years ago)

Any tips for beating Lord Bane? I am at level 50 but he still comes in with twice as many HPs as me and then gets piles of those miraculous foresight combos that the designer says don't exist.

I'm a druid riding a wyvern (to give me Rend) and have Thump, Forest Fire and Sword of Bane as offensive spells, also Gemberry for HP and some mana generation ones, evaporate definitely. Can't remember what spell 6 is at the moment.

aldo, Friday, 20 July 2007 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

I played through the game twice, once with a druid and once with a warrior. My conclusion: Druids suck.

If you're having trouble with Lord Bane I suggest leveling with the temple using money from seiged cities. extra hint: if you level up your mount really high you can avoid fighting all map battles by choosing Cancel instead of Fight.

Coming out for PC within the next week.

http://infinite-interactive.com/puzzlequest/

kingfish, Sunday, 21 October 2007 07:19 (eighteen years ago)

I'm still not convinced that the AI doesn't cheat in the PC demo, given how often it makes spectacular multi-line moves that depend on knowing what's above the top of the screen...

Telephone thing, Sunday, 21 October 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

I played through the DS version 3 times and I'm pretty sure it doesn't cheat. The AI just knows that when there are two runes lined up near the top of the screen, pushing certain runes around them downward has a good chance of causing another match.

abanana, Sunday, 21 October 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

“Infinite Interactive has delivered much more than the average expansion pack and the incredible amount of content that it will include sets a new precedent for offerings on Xbox Live Arcade,” said Peter Andrew, vice president of product development, D3PA. “As much as ‘Puzzle Quest 1.5’ appropriately describes the new content, we look forward to having our fans name the next iteration in the Puzzle Quest universe.”

The expansion pack will offer fans hours of additional gameplay with four brand new Hero professions: Bard, Rogue, Ranger and Warlock. Players will adventure with new or existing Heroes to explore an expansive new area on the Southern Map containing more than 25 challenging quests, cast more than 50 new spells and collect more than 40 new magical items as they’re immersed into the compelling story of Antharg, the Lord of Plague and brother to the infamous Lord Bane. New monsters, bosses and more will challenge veteran and casual fans alike for hours of compelling entertainment.

They're also working on a true sequel: Puzzle Quest: Galactrix

abanana, Monday, 17 March 2008 17:05 (seventeen years ago)

The interface for that really looks kind of... overcomplicated, compared to PQ. Still, I'll probably get this. The question, what system, and hopefully it won't take 18 months for a Mac version. Who am I kidding, though, I'll probably get it for the DS.

Nhex, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 02:59 (seventeen years ago)

I meant 12 months, not 18. Damn my brain.

so is Galactrix worth getting? I love the first Puzzle Quest. Or is Puzzle Kingdoms going to be better? It's out tomorrow, methinks.

Galactrix kinda sucks. The new gameplay setup kinda ruins it.
