been a staunch above and behind - far for all time but thinking about switching it up to in-car no cockpit from hereon out

cozwn, Monday, 5 January 2009 13:31 (sixteen years ago)

only one of these options is not highly effeminate or just plain nuts.

ledge, Monday, 5 January 2009 13:34 (sixteen years ago)

nb it just occurred to me - 'cockpit' means actual solid material, not HUD - ie roof, dashboard, supports. do some games offer in-car no HUD?

ledge, Monday, 5 January 2009 13:36 (sixteen years ago)

lemme guess in-car no cockpit and you have a fancy penis?

cozwn, Monday, 5 January 2009 13:37 (sixteen years ago)

exceedingly fancy.

ledge, Monday, 5 January 2009 13:38 (sixteen years ago)

fresh madness, I can never corner in that view

my penis is unfancy : /

cozwn, Monday, 5 January 2009 13:40 (sixteen years ago)

i prefer to look at the road

Tracer Hand, Monday, 5 January 2009 14:45 (sixteen years ago)

Until they make a game where I can turn my head to the left and see out my driver's side window, it's always going to be some form of above and behind.

өөө (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 5 January 2009 15:47 (sixteen years ago)

How often do you turn your head to the left and see out your driver's side window in real life? I almost never do.

ledge, Monday, 5 January 2009 15:49 (sixteen years ago)

assuming in-car no cockpit = HUD, that

all u outside-camera ppl are insane

goole, Monday, 5 January 2009 15:49 (sixteen years ago)

i use the in-car camera in GTA! only possible way to drive imo

goole, Monday, 5 January 2009 15:50 (sixteen years ago)

I almost always use the "above and behind - far" option. No comment on the fanciness of my penis.

"80s Baby" (Z S), Monday, 5 January 2009 15:52 (sixteen years ago)

in car no cockpit, o/w I get nauseous.

Euler, Monday, 5 January 2009 15:53 (sixteen years ago)

I might have voted incorrectly, but I think above and behind (middle) is probably the default option for most racers, right? At least for games like F-Zero and Mario Kart? That's probably what I'd go with, then.

Nhex, Monday, 5 January 2009 15:56 (sixteen years ago)

cinematic is pretty fun in gta. voted above and behind (close)

bnw, Monday, 5 January 2009 16:13 (sixteen years ago)

in-car no cockpit always seems alot faster than any other camera. above and behind is probably most precise. as a nipper i always went for the former (unless playing out run), i think it took until gran turismo, or maybe ridge racer type 4 to switch to the latter

rio (r1o natsume), Monday, 5 January 2009 16:22 (sixteen years ago)

How often do you turn your head to the left and see out your driver's side window in real life? I almost never do.

Whenever I'm passing someone on the right? Which is like everytime I'm in a street race?

өөө (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 5 January 2009 16:23 (sixteen years ago)

Ah just hit 'em, you're not worried about a few scratches are you? Further evidence that out-of-car cameras are for pussies.

ledge, Monday, 5 January 2009 16:26 (sixteen years ago)

above and behind is probably most precisely designed for those lacking in macho testosterone.

ledge, Monday, 5 January 2009 16:27 (sixteen years ago)

depends on the game. stuff w/lots of crashing potential (intentional or otherwise), above behind close, anything that is racing racing (gt or w/e) in car no cockpit or maybe front bumper. i'll often do both in the same game (burnout is a good example of this)

VISION QUEST TO KNOCK YOU UP (John Justen), Monday, 5 January 2009 16:30 (sixteen years ago)

what is point of front bumper (aka fender) cam? it's just too close to the road.

ledge, Monday, 5 January 2009 16:32 (sixteen years ago)

"above behind middle" most of the time, switching to "in-car with no cockpit" for making it through narrow gaps/shortcuts.

snoball, Monday, 5 January 2009 16:35 (sixteen years ago)

a real man knows his girl from all the angles

bnw, Monday, 5 January 2009 16:39 (sixteen years ago)

Above and behind far, once they make a six-monitor set-up so I can look in any direction then maybe I'll go first person but as it stands way-third-person is the only way I can see what the hell is going on beside my car, usually. Plus I don't know how to drive IRL.

Everyone is a Jedi (Will M.), Monday, 5 January 2009 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

Never stopped anyone from being good at driving games. I can't drive IRL either, but I rule at driving games.

snoball, Monday, 5 January 2009 16:43 (sixteen years ago)

"above behind middle" most of the time = does not rule at driving games

get in the car

ledge, Monday, 5 January 2009 16:49 (sixteen years ago)

a and b - close is the only option here

choomette (sunny successor), Monday, 5 January 2009 16:49 (sixteen years ago)

Driving games = not much to do with driving - see Wipeout or the drag races in NFS:Underground.

snoball, Monday, 5 January 2009 16:54 (sixteen years ago)

i find gran turismo absolutely impossible unless it's in-car! this is a good poll.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 5 January 2009 16:59 (sixteen years ago)

I used in-car no cockpit exclusively when I was addicted to Gran Turismos 1-3 (I don't think having the cockpit was even an option).

In car w/ cockpit a la the last Colin McRae rally game = maddeningly impossible, but also rewarding when I got the hang of it.

that's the sound of the men workin' on the choom gaaeeyang (dan m), Monday, 5 January 2009 18:21 (sixteen years ago)

I switch around until I find one that's comfortable, which is usually in-car cockpit or directly behind.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Monday, 5 January 2009 18:26 (sixteen years ago)

above and behind - close. But I haven't played racing games for ages, because I'm shit at them.

I switch around until I find one that's comfortable

Look, we don't take kindly to crazy talk around here.

өөө (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 5 January 2009 19:06 (sixteen years ago)

yes crazy prejudices only pls

in my mind I somehow equate ppl who use in-car views with those who use normal controls on FPS

both delinquent choices I guess

cozwn, Monday, 5 January 2009 19:07 (sixteen years ago)

normal controls on FPS

by this u mean non-'inverted'? no way

driving in-car and inverting y axis in fps come straight from early game experiences with flight sims. funny, i remember trying to describe wolfenstein to a friend as 'like a flight sim, only you're just a dude'

goole, Monday, 5 January 2009 19:22 (sixteen years ago)

come straight from MY experiences, i shd say

goole, Monday, 5 January 2009 19:22 (sixteen years ago)

i wonder if when you started playing racing games has anything to do with this, like if you started with top gear on the snes, you prefer out-of-car, but if you started with test drive you prefer in-car?

Everyone is a Jedi (Will M.), Monday, 5 January 2009 21:12 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno what i started with but i used to drive out-of-car until i realised that real men drove in-car.

ledge, Monday, 5 January 2009 21:19 (sixteen years ago)

i actually wanted to drive above and behind for gran turismo, so that i could see my AWESOME CAR doing AWESOME THINGS but i couldn't hack it - maybe i was so mesmerised by my own beauty that i forgot to look where i was going

in general i vastly prefer third-person to first-person POV -- but not for driving games, especially gran turismo where the whole thing of it is to feel as hough you're actually driving a real car not hovering above it like some stuntcam spy drone

for the "Driver" series though, i went above-car all the way

Tracer Hand, Monday, 5 January 2009 22:23 (sixteen years ago)

^^^ first Driver game is especially unplayable using the in-car view

snoball, Monday, 5 January 2009 22:26 (sixteen years ago)

depends on the game. stuff w/lots of crashing potential (intentional or otherwise), above behind close, anything that is racing racing (gt or w/e) in car no cockpit or maybe front bumper. i'll often do both in the same game (burnout is a good example of this)

Some games are impossible in-car - fast ones (burnout), not real driving games (gta), crashy ones (motorstorm)

throwbookatface (skygreenleopard), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 22:06 (sixteen years ago)

fast ones (burnout)

LOL N00B

Oh man, another two whole weeks before this thrilling poll closes!

ledge, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 22:25 (sixteen years ago)

Also, Wipeout is UNARGUABLY the FASTEST RACING GAME KNOWN TO MAN.

ledge, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 22:29 (sixteen years ago)

f-zero?

webber, Thursday, 15 January 2009 05:05 (sixteen years ago)

above in-front facing back aka 'inverted'

Bored of Canada (S-), Thursday, 15 January 2009 05:20 (sixteen years ago)

F-Zero faster than Wipeout, definitely. Although ye cannae rely upon in-game speedos to be honest about that sort of thing.

mark taylor, mark dickhead morelike (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 15 January 2009 08:26 (sixteen years ago)

Wait, forgot about zone mode.

Anyway, the correct answer to this poll is inverted.

mark taylor, mark dickhead morelike (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 15 January 2009 08:26 (sixteen years ago)

ye cannae rely upon in-game speedos to be honest about that sort of thing.

This seems like a "it goes up to 11" thing. Wipeout always seems faster than F-Zero, especially in the later stages.

snoball, Thursday, 15 January 2009 10:51 (sixteen years ago)

i usually use the default above-behind-medium view. never understood the in-car view, i like to see what's around me. plus all the racers i grew up with, rad racer on up, kinda instilled the outside car pov.

i always go first-person in the GTA games - it's just insanely difficult to beat any racing or ambulance missions in third person... gets a lil disorienting on motorcycles tho

Unbelievable bunch of panty-waisters on this board.

talk me down off the (ledge), Friday, 30 January 2009 00:05 (sixteen years ago)

In-car is stupid - when I'm driving a real car I'm not stuck facing forward at a zero-degree angle, and those with adjustable cameras are too annoying to control precisely. Out-of-car may be unrealistic but it approximates real vision better in most cases.

throwbookatface (skygreenleopard), Friday, 30 January 2009 19:06 (sixteen years ago)

how can it be both "unrealistic" and approximate "real vision"?

Tracer Hand, Monday, 2 February 2009 21:41 (sixteen years ago)

cos you have more peripheral vision, i guess?

"stuck facing forward at a zero-degree angle" isn't realistic i guess but it allows you to drive better so there

goole, Monday, 2 February 2009 21:45 (sixteen years ago)

lots of guessing going on

six months pass...

I am reformed!!!!!

in-car with cockpit!!!!!!!!

cozwn (webinar), Thursday, 6 August 2009 19:23 (sixteen years ago)

What's the benefit? Verisimilitude?

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 6 August 2009 19:40 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, mostly, plus it feels a lot faster, above and behind far is good for arcadey games like burnout etc but for arcadey-sims like PGR or sims like forza in-car w/cockpit is so boss

who voted for that option in the poll?

cozwn (webinar), Thursday, 6 August 2009 20:13 (sixteen years ago)

In-car changed everything for me with GTA4. It's a whole new game.

antexit, Friday, 7 August 2009 02:52 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, better views of the city. but it's not so good for seeing behind you in tight squeezes.

Great Scott! It's Molecular Man. (Ste), Friday, 7 August 2009 08:46 (sixteen years ago)

two years pass...

I've been playing a lot of 'Driver: San Francisco' lately (ridic concept but great fun). I like that some of the challenges force you to change to in-car views. I find above & behind the easiest to play but in-car w/ no cockpit the most fun. Front bumper is useful for the smash challenges.

we are not bemused (onimo), Saturday, 14 April 2012 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

in-car view got a lot more fun when they started animating the driver's arm when he shifts, and debris on the windshield, and etc. Before that it didn't really offer much to me. I like overhead rear because the context can be really good, and I also like full screen first person for the lack of clutter and better graphics performance.
