Playing Ratchet & Clank Size Matters, quite enjoying the running-around-shooting-things fun that the series is known for.
Then, it pulls me out of that and makes me do some platform-hopping in a lava tube of some sort, then it has me in some flying buzzsaw having to slice up other flying buzzsaws for no clear reason. THEN, it chucks me into space and makes me play ASTEROIDS.
I didn't buy it for all this crap! I just want to run through planets throwing my spanner at robots. IS THAT TOO DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND??
― im burt_stanton btw (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 10 January 2009 00:02 (sixteen years ago)
Obviously I have put away the game and never intend to play it ever again. In the past I've done that with the following:
- Spyro 3- Jak 2- Sonic 3D x 328974923874- Forty billion other 'multigenre' titles
― im burt_stanton btw (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 10 January 2009 00:03 (sixteen years ago)
Bah this is the second time in a fortnight that I've had to try to remember name of the "every game ever (but mostly a 3-d platformer)" title for the PS1.
Isn't there it Quake 2 that has a poorly thought-out first-person shooting game?
Ratchet and Clank has always been fairly multi-genre to be honest, though often the other genres were 2-d platforming instead.
― Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 10 January 2009 00:59 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, and not fucking asteroids etc., and not as often as Size Matters deviates.
Crash Warped?

the ray surfing in mario galaxy is still bullshit
― El Tomboto, Saturday, 10 January 2009 01:21 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, but it is only two stars ever, and the other new stuff like the bubble blowing makes up for it. Tie breaker = the moving balls game, which grew on me.
― Andrew Farrell, Sunday, 11 January 2009 19:34 (sixteen years ago)
if its any consolation i never got through either Jak or Ratchet either
― sonderangerbot, Monday, 12 January 2009 02:32 (sixteen years ago)
first half-life game, jumping through the teleporters
almost any FPS that has some sort of bullshit platform bit
― milling through the grinder, grinding through the mill (S-), Monday, 12 January 2009 03:43 (sixteen years ago)
wasn't all that platform stuff like Half-life's 'thing' ? I don't remember shooting too much.
the asteroid shooting part in Dead Space, annoying but took me a while before I realised you could keep your finger on the button for longer fire. doh.
i know people will disagree with me here, but drifting levels in race games. Also drag levels in NFS.
when i first played San Andreas I almost vomited at the gang warfare sections, deeming them a hindrance. But now I find them to be one of the greatest GTA additions ever.
― Ant Attack.. (Ste), Monday, 12 January 2009 12:59 (sixteen years ago)
too many missions focused on shooting in GTAIV. It's Grand Theft Auto, not Grand Shoot Gunzo.
― Women can be captains too, you know? (jim), Monday, 12 January 2009 13:03 (sixteen years ago)
I felt that way about San Andreas too.
― O Bama, Up Yours! (The Yellow Kid), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 02:32 (sixteen years ago)
the "Gunzo" thing, that is.
San Andreas has so many awesome things going for it, but any time there was a mission where you were forced into first person view and had to use aim the targetting reticule with your analog stick, I immediately switched back to mouse controls. Sometimes I stuck it out, but boy it would have been way more annoying without that option.
― Nhex, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 07:15 (sixteen years ago)
Oh yeah, and fuck those RC plane missions in all the GTAs. Such terrible controls.
― Nhex, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 07:16 (sixteen years ago)
Ocarina of Time and all those horrible horse-riding bits. Seriously just fuck off.
― mark taylor, mark dickhead morelike (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 07:30 (sixteen years ago)
^Oh man, totally. Everyone who talks about Ocarina with nostalgia blinders on conveniently ignores this mandatory aspect. The sailing in Wind Waker was far, far preferable by comparison.
― Nhex, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 07:57 (sixteen years ago)
No way man, the maximum time you were riding anywhere = 2 mins = the minimum time you were sailing in Wind Waker.
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 10:18 (sixteen years ago)
not to mention that riding epona was actually pretty fun compared to sailing the boat
― cozwn, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 10:26 (sixteen years ago)
where do i start
― mark taylor, mark dickhead morelike (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 11:41 (sixteen years ago)
1. epona was shit2. riding that bastard horse was like racing a fucking sherman tank3. wind wanker was boring but at least one could pilot the frigging boat without it crashing into things every 4.2 seconds and taking 4 mins to reverse/rotate/reverse/rotate/etc/etc4. epona was a tory5. jumping that bastard fucking horse over logs almost always ended in tears and broken controllers6. show me a horse that PIVOTS ON THE SPOT and I'll show you my actual testicles
― mark taylor, mark dickhead morelike (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 11:44 (sixteen years ago)
i liked sailing the boat :/
― zappi, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 12:18 (sixteen years ago)
e-pwna.
― Women can be captains too, you know? (jim), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 12:23 (sixteen years ago)
Also, why do mini-bosses exist anymore? Dodge attacks, stun it using most recently acquired weapon, stab/shoot/pound/blow/suck it in the really obvious bright red weak spot on its back, three iterations and it's dead. Hasn't changed in 10 years, is boring as hell, really really needs to go.
― mark taylor, mark dickhead morelike (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 12:27 (sixteen years ago)
racing a fucking sherman tank = one of life's true pleasures, of course, and something that gamers have been doing digitally for ages.

omg the ray surfing is AMZING
― ice cr?m, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 16:11 (sixteen years ago)
No disagreement from me. There's a bit of a buzz from hooking up a huge sequence of drifts or nailing a perfect drag race but all it is is something to get in the way of the next proper race.
Talking of NFS - I'm playing through Carbon just now on xbox and can't stand this bullshit that has you being chased by cops after you've won a race. Fuck off! Just let me save it then go to the next race.
― Francisco Javier Sánchez Brot (onimo), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 17:02 (sixteen years ago)
I loooove drifting.
― ledge, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 17:40 (sixteen years ago)
Ray surfing in Galaxy? Which bits? (Genuinely, I can't remember such a thing unless I blocked it out of trauma)

getting the boat in wind waker felt fucking EXCELLENT, first five minutes of sailing, zelda theme swelling up behind, all like flying fish and seagulls and shit popping up around you, no inkling of quite how much time you are going to spend doing this one thing = perhaps my favorite five minutes of videogame in the decade
i'm not sure what zelda's core dynamic IS, though, the 'new ability -> new challenge -> new area' thing having been the point since like forever — the 'stealth' bits early in WW were totally more intrusive than the sailing
― thomp, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 22:15 (sixteen years ago)

What's rolling up in?
― mark taylor, mark dickhead morelike (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 22:19 (sixteen years ago)
The, for want of a better description, platformer type bits in Gears of War 2 while you're inside the worm. Avoiding the intestinal teeth and all that. Wasn't really in to that at all.
― Women can be captains too, you know? (jim), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 22:21 (sixteen years ago)

Gears of War sounds compelling but I can't get past the whole gung-ho testosterone-laden armour-wielding homosexually-latent macho bullshit.

Did anyone here play Haven? That was a promising idea with the intent to incorporate 500 different styles of game play but it was boring.
― mark taylor, mark dickhead morelike (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 22:36 (sixteen years ago)
Hooray that was the one I was trying to remember! Was it PS2? Oh well.
― Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 10:13 (sixteen years ago)
It was PS2, yeah, and it sounds very much like your description except that it was PS2.
― mark taylor, mark dickhead morelike (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 10:52 (sixteen years ago)
its been mentioned already, but Jak 2 was the one for me. If I wanted to play GTA i'd play GTA.

I loved the drifting in NFS:U, my favourite type of race in the game. OTOH I hated the drag levels. Total total total total total total wanker, particularly as the other cars and the traffic would follow exactly the same sequence for several attempts, then without warning subtly change resulting in totalling your car. I've never thrown or broken a controller, but I came pretty close to putting the pad through the screen with those drags.
― snoball, Thursday, 15 January 2009 00:35 (sixteen years ago)
Because I'd nearly have the correct sequence of shifts/steering/nitro down, then next attempt the traffic would change and I'd end up broadsiding a truck that wasn't there the dozen previous times.
