The novelization of the game

Did you ever read a book based on a videogame? I totally checked these out of the library as a kid:

I remember Metal Gear and maybe Blaster Master, and Faxanadu (although that's not mentioned in the article, maybe it was from a different (!) series?).

It seems like the tradition is alive and well, when I look at the sci-fi section in Border's I see all kinds of Halo etc. novelizations.

I really wanted to read the Resident Evil books after playing them to death but never found the time.

Anyone know if they're any good?

My little brother found a three-pack of those at a church garage sale for 50 cents recently. in near-mint cond., too, with the cards in them and everything.

i flipped through one. they look like SHIT. but, you know, kinda funny-bad.

I thought this thread would be about how games and game narratives have become more like novels. :(

Leee, Friday, 30 March 2007 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

Let's make that thread too!

There were some World of Warcraft novels that one of my former guildmates said were some of the best books he'd ever read. It was sad; until then, I thought him a pretty learned dude.

Haha.

Oh, I just remembered loving a couple of Wing Commander novels as a kid. William R. Forschten lol.

Jordan, Friday, 30 March 2007 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

haha, yeah, i had the wing commander ones.

even better? INFOCOM games got their own novelizations!

Stationfall the novel even had sex scenes, which were quite roasty for 13 year old me.

7th Guest had a novel/hint-book mix.

Myst generated at least 3 books, the first of which had great illustrations.

There were DOOM books too. I remember seeing them on another friend's bookshelf.

I think novels based on videogames is the exact point where my Harold-Bloom-o-meter kicks in.

marmotwolof, Friday, 30 March 2007 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

I read the doom books, i remember being embarrassed about owning them even when I was ten.

webber, Friday, 30 March 2007 23:58 (nineteen years ago)

hahaha exactly. The closest I ever got to a videogame novel was the Captain Nintendo short story they ran in Nintendo Power back in the day.

Surreal 80s horror/platform/puzzle/wtf game Weird Dreams came with a novella in the box. It was better than the buggy, impossible to beat game.

I used to have a lot of Sonic books - novels and "choose your own adventure" ones. I still have a few of them (and no doubt the others are lurking around somewhere). They're shite, but the cover art is great :)

Don't forget the Myst trilogy!

The Book of Atrus
The Book of Ti'Ana
The Book of D'Ni

I do wonder if anyone has ever gotten more then a page or two into any of these.

Z S, Saturday, 31 March 2007 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

From the first page of the Book of Atrus:

"Even now, in the silence of dawn, she could hear Gehn's howls of anguish, his hurt and angry ranting; could hear the words of blame which, at the time, had washed over her. It was her fault. Everything was her fault.

So it was. So it had always been."

i have read a rogue trooper novel based on the video game. i have not played the game.

Alan, Saturday, 31 March 2007 17:48 (nineteen years ago)

ZS I read all three of those in elementary school and I actually really loved them. I never even played Myst. I read a lot of shit back then :/

Will M., Sunday, 1 April 2007 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

The thing is, even after reading all three of those, I'm sure they wouldn't help you out in the game at all. Unless one of the books mentions which pixel you have to click on to get the observatory window to open, etc.
