CDi <--- straight up worst controllers (worst console?) known to man

cozwn, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 11:37 (seventeen years ago)

got to be a lot of love for the SNES and 6-button megadrive pads out there

cozwn, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 11:40 (seventeen years ago)

i gotta lotta dualshock love in my heart.

ledge, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 11:43 (seventeen years ago)

^^^ seconded - imagine trying to play a video game using a TV remote. At a place where I worked we had three CDi decks, but only one could be used at a time on average because the controllers were always going wrong. And because it used IR to talk to the console, if you stood to far away or at the wrong angle = no signal/control.

Second worst would be between the Master System controller (smaller than the NES, basically an uncomfortable sharp cornered box), and the 3DO (cheapo third party SNES controller feel).

I've not used a Wiimote, so I can't comment, but out of the others, the best would have to be either the analogue Saturn or preferably the Dreamcast (wish it had more buttons and a better D pad though).

snoball, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 11:47 (seventeen years ago)

whoops, I meant "seconded" as coming straight after cozwn's CDi post

snoball, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 11:48 (seventeen years ago)

I have to admit to liking the DualShock as well - I tend to prefer larger controllers, but the weight of the DualShock makes up for it's small size.

and also, I'd throw the Jag controller on the "worst" pile - it's like using a push button telephone.

analog saturn obv

The thing that looks like a bit fat UFO?!

Can't imagine holding this:

there are grips underneath

It's the right size for me. The Dreamcast controller has better contouring on the "wings"/grips though. But the analogue Saturn has the six buttons.
I've just grabbed an old DualShock, and I think it's appeal for me is that it doesn't have to be gripped like grim death, it can sit in the hands and be "juggled", if that makes sense, meaning less chance of hand cramp.

snoball, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 12:14 (seventeen years ago)

n64 was perfect for goldeneye but a bit cheap and nasty.

SNES was the best at the time, but I wouldn't want to use one now.

never understood the D-Pad on playstation pads.

dreamcast was straight up crazy, but worked ok.

i am thinking gamecube. build quality was awesome. shoulder buttons in particular were perfect.

I've said before, but the guy who came up with green triangle, pink square, red circle, blue X for Playstation = worth his weight in gold. I really love the Wiimote, but that's largely because it's the first really well worked out innovation in decades. But yeah, the PS1 controller is the default.

I omitted official sticks from this obv, so no snes super advantage

personal favourite is N64. aside from the useless d-pad on the right stick. the rest of it is comfortable and fits my hands nicely. and they came in all kinds of colours! I'm a girl. I like colours.

salsa shark, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 13:51 (seventeen years ago)

and by right stick I mean left stick. I'm going to stop spamming this thread now, bye.

AVOID all the cheap knock-offs you could buy in Dixons and especially Argos...

snoball, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

these were ace, gaudy colours and all

tomofthenest, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 13:58 (seventeen years ago)

I had one of those too!

ledge, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 13:59 (seventeen years ago)

...for years Argos only used to sell one joystick, a crap copy of the all black Quickshot pictured upthread.
And the Cruiser was excellent, with it's spring tension adjustable by twisting the stick. There was a clear plastic version as well.

snoball, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 14:00 (seventeen years ago)

howtf does this poll close apr.1st btw, I set it to jan 28 - can a mod pls change this?

cozwn, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 14:24 (seventeen years ago)

April 1st 2011

snoball, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

haha!!!

cozwn, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 14:29 (seventeen years ago)

Oh man, the Cruiser was badass. The only way to play Sensible Soccer on the Amiga.
But, on gamepads I'm torn. I loved the N64 one; so comfy, and that analog stick was perfect, but it was so cheaply made I think they all eventually stopped responding or got a crazy drift in the dead zone leaving you to have to try and trick one of your friends to take that controller for the Goldeneye marathons.
The Dualshock is probably the only controller I can use for a long time without getting too major cramps, and although the 360 controller feels more comfortable at first, I do get cramps after an hour or so.

CraigG, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

there is almost nothing in the gamepad world that feels as nice in hands as a fresh, brand new N64 joystick. the eventual clogs and grossies are almost worth it just for those first few months of smooth control bliss.

salsa shark, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 15:36 (seventeen years ago)

it's between the snes and ps1 for me, i love d-pads.

remember how the genesis controller (sorry "megadrive 3 button") would always have to jump through hoops when games were ported over from snes/arcade? i remember mapping my three most-used moves in street fighter II and only using those three (mostly just fierce punch/kick though).

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 15:37 (seventeen years ago)

N64 is the worst controller i've ever used.

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 15:37 (seventeen years ago)

i never owned one so i never got used to it, but when playing goldeneye at a friend's house i would be like "seriously? this tiny little inaccurate joystick? really?"

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

OG Gamecube for overall - great hand contours, a little light, great triggers and really good face button setup, it's the only one where you can actually tell the buttons individually by finger press alone and not memory. Wavebird is nice too but it's a little too big, I think. Dreamcast comes close but it's a little awkwardly shaped, especially on the back for the "handles".

For fighters, it's always the digital Saturn pad - awesome d-pad and 6 face buttons. It's an improved version of the already very good SNES/Genesis pads.

It's a generational thing for sure, but I could never totally get used to the Dual Shock and its variants. And yes, the N64 pad is just awful.

Nhex, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

I liked the weight of the Wavebird vs. the OG Gamecube. Either one is by far the most comfortable controller for long sessions.

i always forget about the VMUs! man, those were the best awful idea ever

thomp, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 22:58 (seventeen years ago)

i wonder what kind of controllers we'll be using when this poll finishes!

caek, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

Mind control!

I'll concur with the Dual Shock consensus, and side with those opposing the N64 pad. Also, major props to the brilliant simplicity of the NES pad.

scourge of cords (Z S), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 23:27 (seventeen years ago)

i always forget about the VMUs! man, those were the best awful idea ever

I think that just about every VMU ever 1) is missing it's end cap, 2) has a flat battery or no battery, 3) has never been removed from it's attendant controller. Also, the DC rumble pack made for an unbalanced front heavy controller.

snoball, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 23:37 (seventeen years ago)

i can never use the old joysticks, always got blisters. The worst one I bought was something called the Navigator I think, held it like a gun with a tiny control stick on the top. Looked swish, handled like a shit

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 23:47 (seventeen years ago)

cd you change the poll finishing date of BEST GAMEPAD on ILG to 28/01/2009 pls : D
