Why is it not out in the UK until the end of November?

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

the 2D-3D animation sequence is very hard to convert to your PAL

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

The store I was just at said it's not out until tomorrow, so I went for the Godfather Blackhand edition instead.

i'm only 2 hours in so far. it's lots of fun. the 3d is a little strange, but the 2d is lots of fun. the puzzle solving has been pretty easy so far.

it's nothing like the super mario bros games, and from what i can tell it's nothing like paper mario. but i've only played a few minutes of paper mario, so i'm not sure about that one. the writing is pretty funny, but sometimes the story goes on for a bit too long.

uhhh...what else can i say?....
the mushrooms don't make you bigger, they give you more health. stars make you giant, like in new super mario bros. i can't remember what the flowers do. i think they make you run faster for a little while??...

anyway, so far, i give it an 8 out of 10.

and here's just a little tip for those that want to get this on the cheap:
at target, "billy and mandy" and "ant bully" for the wii are on clearance for $12. gamestop are having a trade in 2 wii games, get 1 free promotion, right now. so if you go to target and buy a copy of those each or 2 copies of one of them, it really doesn't matter. and trade them in at gamestop. HEY! super paper mario for under $30.

another thing that's pretty kick ass, is that when you get a star the screen turns white, and the outline of a giant 8-bit mario appears. and then...

So I just got this in the mail last night, but first impressions are that this is basically the game that's been waiting my whole life for me to play it. I'll co-sign w/ the general frustration w/ all the text and point out that Thousand Year Door had made me literally shout "DAAAAAAAMN" more than SPM by this point in the playtime, but this feels like one of those games I'll be dusting off every few years the way some people dust off SNES Zelda. This pleases me greatly.

jamescobo, Sunday, 15 April 2007 02:17 (eighteen years ago)

I am so pleased to hear this! Thousand Year Door I thought was absolutely brilliant, I loved playing every second of it and was worried from some not-quite-comprehensible comments in Edge that the Wii version would be very different...

Oh oh oh oh oh SHOULD I JUST IMPORT A WII? Surely it would work on my PAL telly, aren't we over this sort of thing by now, I can deal with step down converters (and I guess I will just live on importing play-asia games FOREVER curses). Oh oh oh etc etc.

they're having some kind of problem with this game on PAL wii's. i'll look for the link now.

http://www.destructoid.com/beware-foreigners-super-paper-mario-can-destroy-you--30960.phtml

We just became aware of an issue with Super Paper Mario that has just been released in the USA. It works fine on US consoles. But if you want to play this game on a PAL or Japanese Wii, be it from an original disc or a backup, make sure you upgrade your Wii firmware to the latest available version before inserting the game.

The game contains an NTSC-U Wii update that is not compatible with early European and Japanese Wii firmwares. Failure to upgrade your Wii with the latest firmware before running Super Paper Mario USA on an import system can result in a bricked Wii.

This issue is not specific to CycloWiz, you'll have the same problem with any other region free mods/tricks. It doesn't brick the chip, but the Wii itself, so be very careful!

funny farm, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

I just read some other horror stories about chipped Wiis due to all the various nintendo updates :(

Oh well... I actually found Wii's in stock, unbundled and at normal price yesterday, but it just isn't worth me getting one until, you know, they start releasing SOME GAMES IN THE EU. Seriously, WHY is there always such a huge delay? Language support? Localisation? Licensing issues should not hold up a release for so long, I mean, SERIOUSLY if something like THAT causes the delays that's major ball dropping - but how could it be, this has been a consistent problem ALL THE TIME...
